[Different role of various regions of the caudate nucleus in phenamine-induced stereotyped behavior in cats].

Electrolytic ablation of the ventral parts of the cat caudate nucleus head results in an increase of frequency and disorganization of the pattern of the stereotype head turnings, induced by large doses of amphetamine. Lesion of the dorsal parts, on the other hand, is attended with a decreased number and limited manifestation of stereotype movements. A similar effect appears following a low frequency electrical stimulation of the nucleus ventral part. The disrupting action of neuroleptic haloperidol on the amphetamine-induced stereotype is weakened in animals with ventral lesions and enhanced i

The Behavior Problems Inventory: an instrument for the assessment of self-injury, stereotyped behavior, and aggression/destruction in individuals with developmental disabilities.

The Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01) is a 52-item respondent-based behavior rating instrument for self-injurious, stereotypic, and aggressive/destructive behavior in mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. Items are rated on a frequency scale and a severity scale. The BPI-01 was administered by interviewing direct care staff of 432 randomly selected residents from a developmental center between the ages of 14 to 91 years. For 73% of those selected, at least one problem was endorsed on the BPI-01. A total of 43% showed self-injury, 54% stereotyped behavior, and 38% aggressi

Gut microbiome is associated with stereotypic behavior of the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca).

The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a relict species endemic to China. Captive breeding has boosted its population. However, some captive individuals exhibit stereotypic behavior. Though extensive research showing that host behavior can be influenced by gut microbiota via the gut-brain axis, the gut microbiota related to stereotypic behavior of giant pandas has not been reported. To explore gut microbial composition and functional characteristics of stereotypically behaving (SB) giant pandas, the behavior of 15 captive giant pandas was observed, and their feces were analyzed using 16S

Stereotypical behaviors in chimpanzees rescued from the african bushmeat and pet trade.

Many orphaned chimpanzees whose mothers are illegally killed for their meat (bushmeat) in Africa are sold as pets or kept caged at hotels and businesses to attract tourists. As a result of being separated from their mothers and other chimpanzees at an early age, and spending years in impoverished captive conditions, some of these individuals engage in abnormal behaviors, including stereotypically scratching at their flesh and repetitively rocking back and forth. This paper presents case studies of Poco and Safari, two chimpanzees who were rescued by sanctuaries after living alone on display fo

Litter size predicts adult stereotypic behavior in female laboratory mice.

Stereotypic behaviors are repetitive invariant behaviors that are common in many captive species and potentially indicate compromised welfare and suitability as research subjects. Adult laboratory mice commonly perform stereotypic bar-gnawing, route-tracing, and back-flipping, although great individual variation in frequency occurs. Early life factors (for example, level of maternal care received) have lasting effects on CNS functioning and abilities to cope with stress and therefore may also affect stereotypic behavior in offspring. Access to maternal resources and care are influenced by the

Gender stereotype conformity and age as determinants of preschoolers' injury-risk behaviors.

Unintentional injuries continue to be a serious public-health problem for children and are higher for boys than for girls, from infancy through adulthood. Literature on differential socialization concerning risky behaviors and gender stereotypes suggests that sex differences in unintentional injuries could be explained by children's differential feedback to social pressure, leading to behaviors which conform to masculine and feminine stereotypes. We made the prediction that boys' and girls' conformity with masculine stereotypes influences injury-risk behaviors among preschoolers. Masculinity s

Novelty seeking and stereotypic activation of behavior in mice with disruption of the Dat1 gene.

Disruption of the dopamine (DA) transporter (Dat1) gene in mice leads to a 50% reduction or complete elimination of Dat1 expression in striatum of respective heterozygous (HZ) and knockout (KO) mice. Compared to wild-type (WT) controls, extracellular DA is increased approximately two- and five-fold in the mutants. Although open field (OF) activity is similar for WT and HZ animals, it is enhanced for KO mice. The purpose of the present investigations was to study spontaneously emitted behaviors and to determine the behavioral and neurochemical mechanisms that may contribute to the hyperactivity

Definition of abnormal focused affections and exploration of their relation to abnormal stereotyped behaviors.

The relation between abnormal stereotyped behaviors and abnormal focused affections (i.e., abnormally consistent preferences for specific objects, symbols, and/or physical locations) was examined in 20 children with developmental disabilities. Results indicated that (a) all children who exhibited abnormal focused affections exhibited stereotypies; (b) abnormal focused affections could be studied reliably in individuals with developmental disabilities through the use of direct time-sampling observations, naturalistic observations, and informant reports; and (c) developmental age was significant

Use of clomipramine to treat ritualistic stereotypic motor behavior in three dogs.

Atypical, stereotypic motor and locomotor behavior was observed in 3 dogs. In 1 dog, the behavior included circling, vocalization, and snapping; in another, circling associated with pica and aerophagia; and in a third, gradually intensifying locomotor behavior stimulated by bright light. This behavior interfered with normal interaction between their owners and the dogs, and has been associated with obsessive-compulsive disorders. Treatment with clomipramine, along with other psychotropic medications and behavioral modification, suppressed the inappropriate behavior in all dogs; in 2 of the 3 d

A Review of Approaches for Addressing Oral Stereotypic Behavior in Zoo-Housed Giraffes.

Addressing the presence of stereotypies - repetitive, functionless behaviors - has been at the forefront of contemporary welfare research in zoos. Stereotypies present themselves in many different forms, dependent on the biology of a species, internal and external motivational factors, individual animals' history, and early development. In the case of giraffes, a popular and charismatic species found in zoos, stereotypies concerning the mouth and tongue - oral stereotypies - are especially prevalent. Various hypotheses have been developed in tandem with the observation of giraffe oral stereoty

Sex differences in repetitive stereotyped behaviors in autism: implications for genetic liability.

The implications of the well known sex differences in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are not well understood. The aim of this paper was to investigate whether these differences might be associated with differences in genetic liability. Individuals with ASD (970 families, 2,028 individuals) were recruited as part of the Autism Genome Project (AGP). The families were differentiated into families containing a female (either female-female or male-female) and those with only males. If the sex with the lower prevalence is associated with a greater genetic liability necessary to cro

Dog breed stereotype and exposure to negative behavior: effects on perceptions of adoptability.

The purpose of the study was to determine if brief exposure to a dog behaving badly or in a friendly manner affects subsequent perceptions of the target dog's and other dogs' adoptability. Participants viewed a videotape of an adoptable German shepherd behaving either aggressively or prosocially and were then asked to rate the characteristics and adoptability of the same and different dogs. The results showed that people who saw the aggressive behavioral schema perceived only the target dog and a dog of the same breed to be significantly less adoptable than dogs of other breeds (p<.01). Striatal opioid peptide content in an animal model of spontaneous stereotypic behavior.

Stereotypic behaviors are associated with a broad spectrum of developmental, psychiatric, and genetic disorders. Several lines of evidence indicate that these abnormal repetitive behaviors may be expressed as a consequence of imbalanced activity along the direct and indirect processing pathways of the basal ganglia. Because the activity of these two pathways is modulated, in part, by the neuropeptides dynorphin and enkephalin, we sought to determine whether spontaneous and persistent stereotypy is associated with alterations in striatal neuropeptide content. Specifically, the present study emp

Early development of stereotyped and self-injurious behaviors: II. Age trends.

Thirty-nine infants who were served in early intervention programs and who engaged in stereotyped or self-injurious behaviors were studied weekly from the time they entered the school until they were 3 years old. The development of these behaviors increased and declined over age more slowly than in typical babies. A few children retained the behaviors for long periods, and some were still showing them when they left the program. The hypothesis that body-rocking promotes motor development was not supported. Indeed, body-rocking may be a consequence of motor development. Head-banging seemed to b

Use of fluoxetine for the treatment of stereotypical pacing behavior in a captive polar bear.

Stereotypical behaviors are common in captive animals, particularly captive polar bears. Effects of oral administration of fluoxetine on chronic stereotypical and typical behaviors in a captive polar bear were monitored. Fluoxetine treatment terminated stereotypic pacing behavior, facial tic, and huffing/coughing activity. The expression of typical polar bear behaviors was not affected by fluoxetine treatment, although the proportion of time spent engaged in typical behaviors changed during the course of the observation period. Response of the bear to fluoxetine treatment indicated that pharma

Naloxone prevents and blocks the emergence of neuroleptic-mediated oral stereotypic behaviors.

A commonly used animal model for tardive dyskinesia is the oral stereotypy that is expressed by a challenge dose of a dopamine agonist after daily administration of dopamine antagonists (neuroleptics). In the first of two experiments the expression of this dopamine agonist-induced oral stereotypy was prevented by the concomitant administration of the opiate antagonist naloxone. In a second experiment, if the stereotypy was allowed to be expressed, it could be blocked by the administration of naloxone. To the extent that the effects of chronic neuroleptic treatment in rats is a model for tardiv

Thioridazine dose effects with reference to stereotypic behavior in mentally retarded residents.

Eleven residents receiving long-term thioridazine treatment were studied while receiving their previous dose, standardized low and high doses (1.25 and 2.50 mg/kg per day), and placebo conditions. For theoretical reasons, subjects were also classified by degree of stereotypic behavior on the Fairview Problem Behavior Checklist (Barron & Sandman, 1983). Ratings of hyperactivity and self-injury were significantly lower during the higher as compared with the lower dose condition. Subjects classified as in the high-stereotypy group had significantly and substantially higher levels of maladaptive b

Loss of Cntnap2 Causes Axonal Excitability Deficits, Developmental Delay in Cortical Myelination, and Abnormal Stereotyped Motor Behavior.

Contactin-associated protein-like 2 (Caspr2) is found at the nodes of Ranvier and has been associated with physiological properties of white matter conductivity. Genetic variation in CNTNAP2, the gene encoding Caspr2, has been linked to several neurodevelopmental conditions, yet pathophysiological effects of CNTNAP2 mutations on axonal physiology and brain myelination are unknown. Here, we have investigated mouse mutants for Cntnap2 and found profound deficiencies in the clustering of Kv1-family potassium channels in the juxtaparanodes of brain myelinated axons. These deficits are associated w

Repeated mazindol and methamphetamine administration produces cross-sensitization to stereotyped behavior induced by these agents in rats.

The cross-sensitization to stereotyped behavior between mazindol (MZD) and methamphetamine (MAP) was investigated in rats. MZD (5 and 10 mg/kg/day, p.o.), MAP (5 and 10 mg/kg/day, p.o.) and saline (1 ml/kg, p.o.) were administered once daily for a week. Challenge with MZD (10 mg/kg, p.o.) on the 8th day caused markedly stereotyped behavior in MAP-pretreated group compared with the saline-pretreated control group. MAP (10 mg/kg, p.o.)-induced stereotyped behavior on the 8th day was also greater in MZD-pretreated group rather than the saline-pretreated control group. These results suggest that r
