Spontaneous atraumatic dislocation of sternoclavicular joint in Reiter syndrome.

Reactive arthritis or Reiter's syndrome characteristically affects the joint of the lower limb in an asymmetrical pattern. Usually it does not affect the axial skeleton or upper limbs. Although cases of atraumatic atlantoaxial subluxations have been reported, no case of spontaneous sternoclavicular dislocation in Reiter's syndrome has been reported. This paper describes a case of a 26 year old male patient who developed a spontaneous posterior sternoclavicular joint dislocation. No attempt of reduction was made and the patient was managed conservatively with good results.

Sternoclavicular joint infection: a comparison of two surgical approaches.

BACKGROUND: This study compares conventional open debridement with the recently proposed flap closure technique for sternoclavicular joint infection. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of patients undergoing surgery for sternoclavicular joint infection during the last 7 years. RESULTS: Twenty patients underwent 35 operations for sternoclavicular joint infection from 2002 to 2009. The debridement and open wound procedure (10 of 20 patients, 50%) involved debridement of the clavicle, manubrium, and first rib and open wound care. The joint resection and flap closure procedure (10 of 20 pat

Bilateral sternoclavicular joint septic arthritis presenting as cutaneous abscesses.

The sternoclavicular joint can be involved in ankylosing spondylitis as well as in rheumatoid and degenerative arthritis. Septic arthritis of this joint is infrequently seen, and the diagnosis of this infection can be missed until it presents with a complication. We describe a patient with bacteremia whose presentation of bilateral sternoclavicular joint septic arthritis was multiple cutaneous abscesses on her chest wall.

Evaluation of sternoclavicular joint infection in adults, 2020 to 2025.

BACKGROUND: Sternoclavicular joint infection (SCJI) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition that accounts for <1% of all joint infections. Due to its nonspecific presentation and diverse microbiological causes, SCJI poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 45 cases of SCJI reported between January 2020 and March 2025. Relevant cases were identified through a PubMed search. Demographics, clinical presentation, laboratory data, microbiology, comorbidities, treatment modalities, and outcomes were descriptively analyzed.

Management and Outcomes of Sternoclavicular Joint Infections: A Retrospective Study.

Introduction: Sternoclavicular joint infections (SCJIs) are extremely rare, making up less than 1% of all septic arthritis cases. This retrospective study aims to evaluate the management and outcomes of SCJIs, including both surgical and non-surgical approaches. Methods: This retrospective study included 55 patients treated between January 2005 and December 2023 at the Division of Thoracic and Hyperbaric Surgery in Graz, Austria. Data on patient characteristics, treatment approach, and outcome were analyzed. Results: Out of the 55 patients, 50 (90.91%) underwent surgery. Among them, 21 (38.18%

Posterior dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint: report of two cases.

The authors report the cases of two young patients who had suffered a sporting accident with posterior traumatic dislocation of sternoclavicular joint. In one of the patients closed reduction was accomplished by keeping the limb in a sling. The second patient, after reduction was done, presented recurrence of the dislocation, thus requiring surgical treatment. It is important to observe the relevance of computed tomography to help diagnosing, as well as monitoring the reduction procedure. The objective of this study was to demonstrate two different types of treatment in a rare injury such as t

Posterior dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint leading to mediastinal compression.

Dislocations of the sternoclavicular joint are uncommon, and the posterior variety have a potential for considerable morbidity. We report a case with compression of the vital structures within the superior mediastinum. It was a rugby player getting run over by the scrum. The mechanism was an indirect force exerted forward and laterally against the shoulder. The patient complained of pain and dysphagia. A systolic right cervical murmur was heard. Angiography was normal and esophagography showed extrinsic esophageal compression. Surgical reduction was performed because there was a slight pneumom

[Injuries of the acromio- and sternoclavicular joint--surgical or conservative treatment?].

At the acromioclavicular (AC) joint we distinguish between horizontal instability caused by damage to the AC ligament from vertical instability caused by damage to the coracoclavicular liagments. The most common mechanism of injury is direct force resulting from a fall onto the point of the shoulder. The injury is classified according to the amount of damage brought about by a given force. Horizontal and vertical instability have to be evaluated by special radiographic views. Types I and II are treated by a sling worn for a few days and the application of ice bags. In type III injuries the pat

Sternoclavicular joint involvement in rheumatoid arthritis: clinical and ultrasound findings of a neglected joint.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence of sternoclavicular (SC) joint involvement and the relationship between clinical and ultrasound (US) findings in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: One hundred three consecutive patients with RA and 103 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals were enrolled. Clinical evaluation and blinded US examinations of the SC joint were performed bilaterally in both groups. The presence of gray-scale synovitis, osteophytes, erosions, and intraarticular power Doppler (PD) was recorded. Interobserver agreement was calculated. RESULTS: A total of 412 SC

A Case of Uncommon Tuberculosis Infection Involving the Sternoclavicular Joint.

BACKGROUND Tuberculosis involving the sternoclavicular joint is a rare manifestation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Involvement of the muscular and skeletal system in tuberculosis accounts for approximately 10% of extrapulmonary tuberculosis cases. Of these, only 1% to 2% involve infection of the sternoclavicular joint. The presentation of sternoclavicular joint tuberculosis is often insidious without systemic symptoms. Its diagnosis is very difficult because it mostly occurs with an atypical presentation, therefore requiring a multimodal diagnostic approach. Patients can require a combinatio

Osteoarthritis of the sternoclavicular joint: is clavicular length a risk factor?

INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent disorder of the Sternoclavicular Joint (SCJ), with a reported lifetime prevalence of approximately 50%, yet it is rarely observed in individuals under the age of 35. When symptomatic, it manifests with pain and swelling. Although OA is strongly age-related, the influence of biomechanical factors - such as clavicular length - remains unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective case-control study, computed tomography (CT) scans of adult polytrauma patients admitted to our hospital between 2012 and 2014 were evaluated. OA was defin

Diagnosis and management of sternoclavicular joint infections: a literature review.

The sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) is anatomically and clinically significant considering its proximity to important neuro-vascular structures like the subclavian vessels and the phrenic nerve. Infections of this joint masquerade multiple disorders, delay diagnosis and spread to the bone and deep tissues. There is no standardized workup and treatment protocol for sternoclavicular joint infections (SCJI) as defined in literature. Here, we review the existing literature to understand the current knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of SCJI. We searched English publications in PubMed and includ

Sternoclavicular joint dislocation and its management: A review of the literature.

Dislocations of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) occur with relative infrequency and can be classified into anterior and posterior dislocation, with the former being more common. The SCJ is inherently unstable due to its lack of articular contact and therefore relies on stability from surrounding ligamentous structures, such as the costoclavicular, interclavicular and capsular ligaments. The posterior capsule has been shown in several studies to be the most important structure in determining stability irrespective of the direction of injury. Posterior dislocation of the SCJ can be associated w

Imageological measurement of the sternoclavicular joint and its clinical application.

BACKGROUND: Dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint is rare. However, posterior dislocation compressing important structures in the mediastinum may be fatal. Early diagnosis and prompt therapy of sternoclavicular joint dislocation are important. Computed tomography (CT) is an optimal means to investigate sternoclavicular joint anatomy; however, there are few reports on the imageological anatomical features of the sternoclavicular joint. The study investigated imageological anatomical features, and a new plate was devised according to these data to treat sternoclavicular joint dislocation. M
