BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Recurrent aphthous ulceration is the most common oral mucosal disease known. It presents as three types: minor (most prevalent), major and herpetiform. However, there are no well established effective and reliable treatments of this condition. Alchemilla vulgaris (Lady's Mantle) has traditionally been used in oral hygiene and was recently shown to accelerate wound healing when used in combination with glycerine. The objective of this study was to determine whether this combination is effective in the treatment of the most prevalent form of aphthous ulcers.
METHODS: A

This study evaluated the efficacy of bioadhesive hydrogel patches, made of a pharmaceutical grade cellulose derivative, in the control of pain and as an aid to healing of aphthous ulceration. Patients kept a twice daily ulcer diary to record their pain level on a visual analogue scale. The sensitivity of the test ulcer was assessed by a challenge with pure orange juice as a stimulant before and after application of the patch by the patient. A significant reduction in stimulated pain was recorded following application of the patches to the ulcers (P < 0.01). The patches were found to adhere lon

The treatment of a 12-year-old girl with a lifelone history of recurrent infections and aphthous stomatitis is reported. A profound neutropenis, first noted at the age of 2 years, occurring at least every month was observed together with multiple mouth ulcers a sore throat and swelling of the jugular glands. Levamisole, originally described as an anthelmintic, has a beneficial effect on the symptoms of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. After levamisole treatment aphthous stomatitis was milder and in the 1-year follow-up period the patient was asymptomatic several times during a phase of obvious n

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a very frequent condition in developed countries whose basic symptom is a lesion referred to as an aphthous ulcer. High levels of interleukin (IL)-1 and IL-6 and low salivary levels of IL-10 are the basis of RAS pathogenesis. Sublingual supplements based on IL-10 can be very useful in reducing the phenomenon of aphthous recurrence in patients with RAS. An observational clinical experience with a group of 5 patients with RAS receiving a commercially available IL-10-based supplement was reported by the authors. The findings revealed a subsequent reduction i

AIM: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a painful and common ulcerative form that can pose a diagnostic challenge. In fact, similar oral ulcers can appear secondary to a variety of well-defined pathological conditions. Thus, the purpose of this work was to update the current knowledge about RAS METHODS: A narrative review is presented aiming to clarify the extensive differential diagnosis of RAS and its management.
CONCLUSION: As a first aid in relieving the pain, topical applications of corticosteroids, antibiotics, and analgesics are highly recommended, while systemic therapy of RAS sho

BACKGROUND: Aphthous stomatitis is a painful, recurrent disease of the oral mucous membrane. Silver nitrate sticks have been used for a long time to provide pain relief for the duration of an aphthous ulceration, with only one application. Silver nitrate causes chemical cauterization and increases the depth of injury.
OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of chemical cautery with silver nitrate in reducing pain of aphthous ulceration and to determine if this treatment shortens or prolongs healing.
METHODS: In a randomized, patient-blinded, placebo-controlled study, 97 patients with painful minor o

INTRODUCTION: The aetiology of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) remains unknown. An association between RAS and coeliac diseases (CD) has previously been suggested, but the supporting evidence remains equivocal. The aim of the present study was to determine the likely frequency of CD in a large cohort of patients with well-defined RAS, by detailed haematological and serological analysis, including the detection of anti-endomysium and anti-reticulin antibodies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 87 patients with minor RAS. Full blood counts and the presence of IgA anti-endomysial an

Behçet's disease is a rare condition in children and characterized by a triad of recurrent aphthous stomatitis, genital ulceration and uveitis. The aetiology is unknown, but systemic vasculitis is the main pathology. The oral lesions resemble Sutton disease, which is another form of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) that composes approximately 10 per cent of cases and is known as major aphthous stomatitis, can easily be overlooked if the other symptoms are not questioned. We presented a 12-year-old girl with the initial complaint of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. During the follow-up period,

In the present study, the potential involvement of Streptococcus oralis in the aetiology of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) was investigated using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Biopsies from 28 RAS patients were analysed, in addition to 20 oral lichen planus (OLP) and 13 normal biopsies that were used as controls. PCR was carried out using a primer pair that targets the D-alanine:D-alanine ligase gene and detects DNA from both S. oralis and the closely related species Streptococcus mitis. Discrimination between these two species was achieved by digestion of PCR products with the res

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common oral disorder, however, despite detailed clinical, immunologic, hematologic and microbiologic investigation, the etiology of RAS remains unknown. At present, topical steroids and antimicrobial mouth rinses are the mainstays of treatment, but there is still no means of preventing recurrence of the oral ulceration.

A randomized double-blind study was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of levamisole in the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Thirty patients, aged 9-65 years, were selected, based on a documented history of three or more episodes of RAS. Patients were instructed to take 150 mg of levamisole (or placebo) daily for 3 days at the onset of the first prodromal symptoms of an ulcer. The regimen was to be repeated for each new episode, but not more than once per week. At each episode patients were examined and evaluated as to number and duration of ulcers, interval between

Helicobacterpylori (H. pylori) is a Gram-negative bacterium that colonizes gastric mucosa and is often transmitted through direct contact with saliva, contaminated food or water, and vomit. The majority of the infected individuals remain asymptomatic for a long period. Infection with H. Pylori often presents with dyspepsia, nausea, frequent belching, bloating, abdominal discomfort, burning abdominal pain, and peptic ulcer. A potential association between H. Pylori and recurrent aphthous stomatitis was previously reported; however, the presence of causative relationship between the two remained

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common oral ulcerative inflammatory disease with unknown etiology. IL-2 and IFN-γ are secreted by Th1 cells and the elevated levels of them have been reported in RAS. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of IL-2 and IFN-γ genes could alter the cytokine production. The aim of this study was to investigate frequencies of IL-2 and IFN-γ alleles and genotypes in a group of patients with minor-RAS (MiRAS). PCR-SSP method used to type genomic DNA of 64 Iranian patients with MiRAS for IL-2 gene (G -330 T) and (G +166 T) and IFN-γ gene at position UTR5
