Development of In Vitro Denture Biofilm Models for Halitosis Related Bacteria and their Application in Testing the Efficacy of Antimicrobial Agents.

Since dentures can serve as a reservoir for halitosis-causing oral bacteria, halitosis development is a concern for denture wearers. In this study, we surveyed the prevalence of four selected halitosis-related species (Fusobacterium nucleatum, Tannerella forsythia, Veillonella atypica and Klebsiella pneumoniae) in clinical denture plaque samples, and developed denture biofilm models for these species in vitro to facilitate assessment of antimicrobial treatment efficacy. Design : Denture plaque from ten healthy and ten denture stomatitis patients was screened for the presence of aforementioned

Risk factors for denture-related oral mucosal lesions in a geriatric population.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Denture-related mucosal lesions have been broadly studied. However, no consensus has been reached regarding the risk factors associated with these lesions, and few studies have used multivariable analysis to determine the relative significance of different risks. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between systemic, local, and denture factors on the risk of denture-related oral mucosal lesions in an elderly population by using multivariable analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty-four elderly denture wearers recruited from geriatric resid

Oral mucosal lesions associated with the wearing of removable dentures.

Lesions of the oral mucosa associated with wearing of removable dentures may represent acute or chronic reactions to microbial denture plaque, a reaction to constituents of the denture base material, or a mechanical denture injury. The lesions constitute a heterogeneous group with regard to pathogenesis. They include denture stomatitis, angular cheilitis, traumatic ulcers, denture irritation hyperplasia, flabby ridges, and oral carcinomas. Denture stomatitis is the most common condition which affects the palatal mucosa in about 50% of wearers of complete or partial removable dentures. Most of

Influence of denture plaque biofilm on oral mucosal membrane in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have the lower airways colonized with pathogenic bacteria in a stable period of the disease and during exacerbations. The etiology of bacterial exacerbations of COPD depends on the underlying disease, the frequency of exacerbations and antibiotic therapy. Microorganisms can be aspirated off the denture plaque biofilm into the lower respiratory tract and could reduce the patient's immunity and cause pneumonia. COPD patients, who are using acrylic dentures in oral cavity, are exposed to denture stomatitis and oral candidiasis. The aim of

Dual-Loaded Galangal Extract and Lemongrass Oil Biobased Self-Emulsifying System for Denture-Cleansing Applications.

Denture stomatitis, an inflammation involving the formation of plaque material on the denture surfaces, presents a great deal of difficulty for denture wearers. Although denture cleansers are widely used to prevent this condition, commercial formulations containing inorganic ingredients can cause adverse health effects, promote microbial proliferation, and alter denture color. To address these limitations, we developed, for the first time, a dual-loaded galangal extract (GE) and lemongrass oil (LGO) solid self-emulsifying drug delivery system (solid-SEDDS-GL) as a novel natural-based denture c

[The interrelation between allergic reactions to dentures made of stainless steel and the skin hypersensitivity to Cr and Ni].

Twenty-two patients with stainless steel dentures, suffering from skin sensitization to chromium and nickel, were examined. The majority of these patients wore the dentures without complaining of local or general pathologic reactions. In three allergic catarrhal glossitis, aphthous stomatitis, and dermatitis were diagnosed. Replacement of stainless steel dentures with identical dentures made of other material resulted in complete cure.

The pre prosthetic management of the edentulous patient.

The problems to be solved are those largely caused by prolonged wearing of old, inadequate dentures where faulty occlusion, ill-fitting bases, poor denture hygiene, parafunctional habits combine to produce denture stomatitis and papillary hyperplasia. A programme is set out to deal with these problems and to adjust abnormal frenum and muscle attachment.

Gellan-Based Hydrogel as a Drug Delivery System for Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester in the Treatment of Oral Candida albicans Infections.

Candida albicans can cause various types of oral infections, mainly associated with denture stomatitis. Conventional therapy has been linked to high recurrence, toxicity, and fungal resistance, necessitating the search for new drugs and delivery systems. In this study, caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) and gellan gum (GG) were studied as an antifungal agent and carrier system, respectively. First, we observed that different GG formulations (0.6 to 1.0% wt/vol) were able to incorporate and release CAPE, reaching a controlled and prolonged release over 180 min at 1.0% of GG. CAPE-GG formulatio

Impact of Denture Use on Ischemic and Bleeding Outcomes of Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction.

Objective Oral diseases, including periodontitis and stomatitis, are highly prevalent worldwide and reportedly associated with the development of cardiovascular disease. Given the high rate of stomatitis in individuals wearing dentures, denture users may be at high risk of poor cardiovascular outcomes. We therefore investigated whether or not the use of dentures is associated with a poor clinical outcome in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI). Methods This two-center retrospective observational study was conducted between January 2012 and March 2020. A total of 1,046 patients with a

Influence of thermocycling on the antifungal properties of 3D printed denture base material containing zwitterionic and quaternary ammonium compounds.

Denture stomatitis, primarily caused by the colonization of Candida albicans biofilms, remains a persistent clinical challenge. This study investigated the effects of incorporating 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium bromide (DDAM) into 3D-printed denture base resins to enhance their antifungal properties and evaluate their impact on flexural strength, even after undergoing thermocycling. Following simulated thermal aging (10,000 thermal cycles), all groups exhibited a decline in antifungal efficacy, with the most pronounced reduction observed in th

Prevalence of Candida among Denture Wearers and Nondenture Wearers.

INTRODUCTION: A denture wearer is highly prone to develop Candida-associated denture stomatitis (CADS) due to the conversion of the normal oral commensal Candida spp. into a pathogen under favorable conditions. Immuno-compromised status, trauma from the prosthesis, other systemic conditions, and improper maintenance of the dentures by the patient are few of the causative agents which turn the oral balance into an unhealthy and unsuitable foundation for the wearing of the prosthesis. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare subjects wearing complete dentures and nondenture wearers
