Neighborhood food environment and body mass index among Japanese older adults: results from the Aichi Gerontological Evaluation Study (AGES).

BACKGROUND: The majority of studies of the local food environment in relation to obesity risk have been conducted in the US, UK, and Australia. The evidence remains limited to western societies. The aim of this paper is to examine the association of local food environment to body mass index (BMI) in a study of older Japanese individuals. METHODS: The analysis was based on 12,595 respondents from cross-sectional data of the Aichi Gerontological Evaluation Study (AGES), conducted in 2006 and 2007. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), we mapped respondents' access to supermarkets, conveni

High Fecal Contamination and High Levels of Antibiotic-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae in Water Consumed in the City of Maputo, Mozambique.

In the city of Maputo, Mozambique, food and water are often sold on the streets. Street water is packaged, distributed, and sold not paying attention to good hygienic practices, and its consumption is often associated with the occurrence of diarrheal diseases. Coincidentally, the increase of diarrheal diseases promotes the inappropriate use of antibiotics that might cause the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. In this context, the present study aimed to assess the microbiological quality of water sold on the streets of Maputo, as well as the antibiotic resistance profile of s

A participatory food environment study on healthy diets in Southern and Eastern Zambia.

The food environment plays an important role in shaping diets, yet evidence in Zambia is limited. Traditional fermented foods such as mabisi, a Zambian traditional fermented milk, are beneficial and recommended as part of a healthy diet in the Zambian food-based dietary guidelines. Using components of Photovoice, this study explored factors influencing the consumption of healthy diets in the urban and rural food environments of two Zambian districts, Choma and Chipata, which differ in mabisi consumption. Fifty-seven participants shared their perspectives, revealing that despite the differences

Poor food hygiene and housing as risk factors for typhoid fever in Semarang, Indonesia.

To identify risk factors for typhoid fever in Semarang city and its surroundings, 75 culture-proven typhoid fever patients discharged 2 weeks earlier from hospital and 75 controls were studied. Control subjects were neighbours of cases with no history of typhoid fever, not family members, randomly selected and matched for gender and age. Both cases and controls were interviewed at home by the same trained interviewer using a standardized questionnaire. A structured observation of their living environment inside and outside the house was performed during the visit and home drinking water sample

Perceived implications of COVID-19 policy measures on food insecurity among urban residents in Blantyre Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Malawi is at the brink of experiencing food insecurity amidst the COVID-19 pandemic as the vast majority of its population lives in extreme poverty. While measures are being implemented to avert the spread of COVID-19, little is known about how COVID-19 policy measures have impacted food insecurity in urban Malawi. This study addresses this gap by exploring the implications of COVID-19 policy measures on food insecurity in low-income areas of Blantyre in Malawi. METHODS: We used Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory to explore the implications of COVID-19 policy measures on peoples'

Subjective versus Objective Definitions of Homelessness: Are there Differences in Risk Factors among Heavy-Drinking Women?

Investigations with homeless populations have focused on those living on the streets or in shelters; few have examined phenomena based on respondents' self-definitions as homeless or not. This investigation examined similarities and differences among risk factors (including mental health, substance abuse, religion/spirituality, social support, and risky sexual behaviors) using two definitions of homelessness: one where place of residence defined individuals as homeless (the `objective', or traditional, definition) and another where respondents defined themselves as homeless (the `subjective' d

Mapping Advertising Assets Project: a cross-sectional analysis of food-related outdoor advertising and the relationship with deprivation in Leeds, UK.

OBJECTIVE: Food environments can influence dietary behaviours. Promotion of foods high in fats, salt and sugars is a barrier to healthy eating. We explore advertising by deprivation in an English city. DESIGN: Using a cross-sectional design, we describe the prevalence of outdoor advertising, the types of products advertised and the UK Nutrient Profile Modelling scores for advertised foods and non-alcoholic beverages. Differences in outdoor advertising prevalence by area deprivation were assessed using χ2 tests. SETTING: Six areas in each of five deprivation strata were randomly selected from

Food Safety in Informal Markets: How Knowledge and Attitudes Influence Vendor Practices in Namibia.

Background: Informal markets are essential to ensuring food accessibility and supporting economic livelihoods throughout sub-Saharan Africa; however, food safety in these settings remains poorly regulated and under-resourced. As such, foodborne illnesses originating from such settings pose serious public health threats. Despite the growing reliance on ready-to-eat street foods in Namibia, little is known about the food safety knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of food handlers in informal settings. This study investigated food handlers' KAP regarding food safety at the Oshakati Mini Mar

Dietary sources of sodium intake in nigerian adults: A population-based cross-sectional study.

Nigeria seeks to address the growing burden of hypertension and related diseases by reducing excessive dietary sodium through national dietary policymaking. This study aims to describe the levels and sources of dietary sodium intake among Nigerian adults to inform these policies. From June 2023 to July 2023, adults aged 18 to 69 years old were recruited from the Federal Capital Territory, Kano, and Ogun states to participate in a population-based, cross-sectional demographic health survey. Data were also collected to assess levels and dietary sources of sodium through four 24-h dietary recalls

Integrated environmental and nutritional efficiencies of local foods in Indonesia: a cradle-to-grave enviro-nutritional life cycle assessment.

BACKGROUND: Indonesia faces simultaneous pressure to improve nutrition and reduce the environmental burden of food systems yet is underrepresented in nutritional life cycle assessment (nLCA) literature. Most existing nutritional functional units (nFUs) were developed in high-income countries, with no consensus on which nFU suits which purpose. Food and Agriculture Organization guidance sets out how such choices should be justified against a study's goal and scope. We evaluated the enviro-nutritional efficiencies of commonly consumed Indonesian foods using a holistic nFU. METHODS: We modelled

Sexual risk behavior and condom use among street youth in Hollywood.

A study of 610 street youth aged 13-23 who attended drop-in centers in Hollywood, Calif., reveals that 96% are sexually experienced. One-half of the young men and one-third of the young women have engaged in sex for food, money, shelter, drugs or other items needed. Twenty-five percent of the men and 15% of the women have injected drugs at some time in their life. Some 45% of the men and 30% of the women used condoms at last intercourse. A logistic regression analysis found that among men, those who have completed 10th grade or higher are nearly three times as likely to use condoms as are thos

Improving Access to the Transportation Alternatives Program for Rural Communities.

Rural small towns with small main streets and compact downtown development can be ideal locations to create walkable communities. The Centers for Disease Controls and Prevention (CDC)'s High Obesity Program (HOP) funds Cooperative Extension programs to implement strategies to improve food access and support active transportation in high obesity (often rural) counties. The Louisiana State University (LSU) AgCenter HOP program had previously partnered with rural low-income communities to create Complete Streets plans but was challenged to find ways to implement those plans. Beyond Proximity: Food Vendor Landscapes, Everyday Food Sourcing, and Dietary Diversity in Three Nairobi Neighborhoods.

Urban food environments in rapidly growing sub-Saharan African cities are shaped by informality, density, and income inequality, yet few studies integrate spatial analysis with participatory methods to explain how residents navigate these environments and how this relates to dietary diversity. We conducted a cross-sectional, descriptive mixed-methods study (August 2023-January 2024) across three income-diverse Nairobi neighborhoods: Westlands (high-income), Kasarani (middle-income), and Viwandani (low-income). We mapped 3548 food vendors and conducted photo-elicited interviews with 22 particip
