Immuno-protective efficiency of feed-based whole-cell inactivated bivalent vaccine against Streptococcus and Aeromonas infections in red hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus × Oreochromis mossambicus).

Streptococcosis and motile aeromonad septicemia (MAS) are well-known diseases in tilapia culture, which cause mass mortality with significant economic losses. The development of feed-based bivalent vaccines in controlling these diseases has been initiated, however, the mechanisms of immunities and cross-protection in fish remain unclear. This study was conducted to assess the immuno-protective as well as the cross-protective efficacy of a newly developed feed-based bivalent vaccine against Streptococcus and Aeromonas infections in red hybrid tilapia. A total of five groups of fish were vaccina

Experimental cryoglobulinaemia. Production and properties of streptococcus-induced rabbit cryoglobulins.

Cryoglobulin production in rabbits immunized with streptococcal vaccines began about 3 weeks after immunization began and maximum yields from fresh immune sera ranged from <0.1 mg/ml to >6 mg/ml in individual rabbits. The cryoglobulins contained IgM and IgG, antiglobulin that was mainly IgM, IgG homogeneous antibodies to streptococci, and DNA. It is postulated that cryoglobulins are formed in two stages: alteration of IgG followed by antigen—antibody precipitation with antiglobulin.

Immune response and protection efficacy of formalin-killed vaccines against Streptococcus iniae in four-finger threadfin Eleutheronema tetradactylum.

Four-finger threadfin, Eleutheronema tetradactylum farming in southern Taiwan has been facing disease problems caused by Streptococcus iniae since 2018. The development of a vaccine against infectious S. iniae in the cultured threadfin industry is necessary. Thus, this study aimed to examine the efficacy of threadfin immunized formalin-killed cells (FKC) from S. iniae GSI-111 for 42 days post-vaccination (dpv) using two doses of FKC alone (a booster at 14 dpv) as group A, and FKC mixed with ISA763A adjuvant using a single dose as group B or double doses as group C. Serotype distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility profile of invasive group B streptococcal disease-in South Indian population.

Invasive group B Streptococcal disease (iGBS) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in neonates for which the development of an efficacious vaccine remains a global health imperative. The knowledge about the serotype distribution of iGBS is important component for formulation of Capsular polysaccharide (CPS)-based vaccine. However, there were absolute lack of information on serotype distribution in invasive GBS isolates from Indian subcontinent. Methods This study has assessed the serotype distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility profile of invasive group B streptococcal isolat

Rapidly fatal pneumococcal septicemia in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Streptococcal pneumoniae septicemia was responsible for the deaths of 3 patients with chronic systemic lupus erythematosus. The absence of a spleen likely contributed to sepsis in 2 patients. One patient had been immunized with 14-valent pneumococcal vaccine with a doubling of serum antibody concentrations at one month to all vaccine capsular polysaccharide types except for Types 1 and 12. The patient died 74 months after immunization of pneumococcal Type 1 sepsis.

[Recombinant fragments of conservative proteins of group B streptococci as a basis of specific vaccine].

AIM: The study devoted to problem of using of recombinant fragments of group B streptococci (GBS) conservative proteins for induction of immune response against streptococcal infections. Two recombinant polypeptides (ScaAB and-ScpB1) corresponding to immunogenic epitopes of two surface GBS proteins ScaAB and C5a-peptidase, which are presented in other streptococcal species, were studied. The objective of the study was to assess specificity and protective activity of mentioned polypeptides against homologous and heterologous strains of pathogenic streptococci from different groups. Group A Streptococcus vaccine Development: An Indian public health imperative.

BACKGROUND: Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is a significant pathogen responsible for a wide range of diseases, including severe complications such as Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), which predominantly affect low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like India. GAS infections impact over 800 million individuals annually, resulting in approximately 639,000 deaths due to RHD complications. Despite significant advancements, developing an effective GAS vaccine has faced several challenges, including the complexity of GAS virulence mechanisms, the diversity of emm types, and the lack of suitable precli

Pneumococcal endocarditis involving the pulmonic valve in a patient with HIV.

Infective endocarditis in drug users commonly targets the tricuspid valves, whereas pulmonic valve endocarditis is a rare occurrence. Staphylococcus aureus rather than Streptococcus species is the culprit organism. Streptococcal pneumonia is also not commonly seen as an etiological agent for endocarditis. Here we present a case of a 57-year-old man with a history of HIV infection on antiretroviral therapy who was admitted for sepsis and found to have pneumococcal bacteremia with vegetation on a pulmonic valve. He had been vaccinated with both pneumococcal conjugate vaccine 13 and pneumococcal

Post-infectious group A streptococcal autoimmune syndromes and the heart.

There is a pressing need to reduce the high global disease burden of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) and its harbinger, acute rheumatic fever (ARF). ARF is a classical example of an autoimmune syndrome and is of particular immunological interest because it follows a known antecedent infection with group A streptococcus (GAS). However, the poorly understood immunopathology of these post-infectious diseases means that, compared to much progress in other immune-mediated diseases, we still lack useful biomarkers, new therapies or an effective vaccine in ARF and RHD. Here, we summarise recent literat

Vaccine strategies to prevent rheumatic fever.

Group A streptococci (GAS) are responsible for numerous human illnesses, ranging from pharyngitis to severe invasive infections, such as necrotizing fascitis and toxic shock syndrome to the postinfectious sequelae, acute rheumatic fever (ARF), and glomerulonephritis. To date, to develop a vaccine, studies have focused on the M protein. However, designing a vaccine to prevent GAS infection based on this molecule has been hampered by the vast number of M protein serotypes and the possibility that it may induce potentially harmful autoimmune reactions. In this article, the authors discuss recent

The Role of Plant Oils in Combating Streptococcal Infections: Mechanisms, Efficacy, and Therapeutic Potential.

Streptococcal infections, caused by species such as Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Streptococcus mutans, represent a major global health concern, particularly in the face of rising antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Conventional treatments-including vaccines and antibiotics-are increasingly compromised by factors such as genetic variability, biofilm formation, and drug resistance mechanisms. In this context, plant-derived oils emerge as promising alternatives due to their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and complex phytochemical profiles that hinder resistance develop

Necrotizing fasciitis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome secondary to varicella in a healthy child.

Varicella is usually considered to be a benign disease in healthy children; however, serious complications can occur such as necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome. We describe a 38-month-old girl with necrotizing fasciitis and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome following varicella. She was previously healthy and vaccinated against varicella at 12 months of age. She had been diagnosed with varicella three days prior to presenting at our facility; she developed fever, vomiting, and painful swelling on her left flank. Her skin lesions worsened, she became lethargic, and had episodes of h

Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome in two patients infected by a colonized surgeon.

The incidence of severe invasive infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, a group A streptococcus (GAS), has increased in the past 10 years. Most cases occur outside of the hospital setting. We report on two patients with nosocomial streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (StrepTSS). In patient 1 the syndrome was associated with the development of necrotizing fasciitis following inguinal hernia repair. Patient 2 suffered from StrepTSS shortly after receiving a tetanus vaccine in her left deltoid. Epidemiologic investigations of these cases, which were noted within 48 hours of each other, showed

Poststreptococcal acute glomerulonephritis: fact and controversy.

Poststreptococcal acute glomerulonephritis is prototypic of the immunologic glomerulonephritides. It most commonly follows streptococcal infection of the pharynx or skin. The diagnosis is usually not difficult when a nephritic clinical presentation (with such manifestations as hematuria, edema, and hypertension) is associated with serologic evidence of recent streptococcal infection and a depressed serum complement concentration. Currently, however, the nephritogenic antigen(s) has not been identified and has not been shown to be the same antigen for all nephritogenic streptococci; it may not

Comparative Evaluation of Oral Biofilm and Killed Cell Vaccines Against Streptococcus iniae in Four-Finger Threadfin Fish (Eleutheronema tetradactylum): Immune Response and Protection Efficacy.

Mariculture, a significant component of the maritime industry that focuses on marine food production, faces challenges in maintaining productivity during bacterial disease outbreaks, particularly in high-value aquaculture such as the four-finger threadfin fish in Taiwan. Streptococcosis, caused by Streptococcus iniae, is a major contributor to the mortality of the four-finger threadfin (Eleutheronema tetradactylum). Recurrent streptococcosis outbreaks have highlighted the pressing need for highly effective vaccination strategies. Given its safety, environmental friendliness, and protective eff

Differential transcriptomic response in the spleen and head kidney following vaccination and infection of Asian seabass with Streptococcus iniae.

Vaccination is an important strategy in the protection of aquaculture species from major diseases. However, we still do not have a good understanding of the mechanisms underlying vaccine-induced disease resistance. This is further complicated by the presence of several lymphoid organs that play different roles when mounting an immune response. In this study, we attempt to elucidate some of these mechanisms using a microarray-based approach. Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) were vaccinated against Streptococcus iniae and the transcriptomic changes within the spleen and head kidney at one and se

Prevention of group B streptococcal infection.

Group B streptococci continue to be major perinatal pathogens, both for mothers and their infants, and are associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and its attendant cost to society. Approaches to prevention are directed toward either eliminating exposure to the organism or enhancing host resistance, that is, chemoprophylaxis and immunoprophylaxis. Intrapartum chemoprophylaxis has been shown to effectively interrupt vertical transmission of group B streptococci from the genitally colonized mother to the infant and to decrease the incidence of both maternal and early-onset neonatal gro

A Time to Save.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS), characterized by Lancefield in 1933, was not recognized as a human pathogen until the early 1970s when it emerged and replaced Escherichia coli as the most common cause of sepsis and meningitis among neonates and young infants. This article briefly gives a personnel account of the discovery of clinical syndromes of GBS distinguished by age at onset, vertical mode of transmission for early-onset disease, meningeal tropism for GBS capsular (CPS) type III strains, and protective CPS epitopes. It also reviews the difficult evolution of the now routine program for anten

Erythema nodosum induced by Covid-19 Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccine: A case report and brief literature review.

Erythema nodosum (EN), the most common form of panniculitis, is a reactive inflammation of the subcutaneous fat clinically presented with a sudden onset of painful, erythematous, nodular, subcutaneous lesions, typically localized to the pretibial area. EN is commonly caused by numerous infections (especially beta-haemolytic streptococcal infections), autoimmune diseases (sarcoidosis), inflammatory bowel conditions and drugs. EN induced by Covid-19 vaccines is rarely reported. We describe an original clinical observation of a 75-year-old woman who presented with EN after receiving the second do

Development and evaluation of the immunoprotective efficacy of a bivalent inactivated vaccine against Streptococcus suis serotypes 2 and 9.

Streptococcus suis (S. suis, SS), a significant zoonotic pathogen, causes large-scale swine epidemics and substantial economic losses. Based on capsule antigen differences, at least 29 serotypes have been identified. Given that existing commercial vaccines target only serotypes 2 or a few others, and lack immunoprotection against serotype 9, this study designed and developed a bivalent inactivated candidate vaccine to cover serotypes 2 and 9, evaluation of the protective efficacy of weaning piglets.
