Cerebellar Abscess Caused by Rare Bacteria: A Case Report.

Rothia dentocariosa and Streptococcus intermedius are bacteria of the normal upper respiratory tract flora. To our knowledge, only 3 cases of a brain abscess due to R. dentocariosa have been reported. We present a 66-year-old man with a cerebellar abscess due to R. dentocariosa and S. intermedius. The patient had a gradual worsening of dizziness with imbalance and binocular diplopia during the 3 days before admission. Abnormal findings from the neurological examination were horizontal and circular positional nystagmus on right and left gaze, torsional vertical nystagmus on downward gaze, skew

Epidural empyema following nBCA embolization of the middle meningeal artery for the treatment of a chronic subdural hematoma.

Chronic subdural hematomas (CSDHs) are a common neurosurgical disease for which middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization is emerging as an attractive and efficacious endovascular treatment modality. We present the first known case of a Streptococcus intermedius epidural abscess that resulted following MMA embolization for a left-sided CSDH that required evacuation and washout through a craniotomy. Intracranial infections can be a potentially devastating complication from MMA embolization in this patient population.

The Role of Electronic Cigarettes in Dental Caries: A Scoping Review.

Dental caries, a predominant childhood and adolescence affliction, has numerous factors implicated in its pathogenesis. Electronic cigarettes (ECs) have recently gained popularity among the younger population. Various factors, such as the EC liquid composition and aerosols, are associated with the development of dental caries. This review explains numerous EC-related factors which may lead to dental caries. An electronic search was conducted in Medline (Pubmed), Scopus, and Embase databases to evaluate the original research investigating the role of ECs in developing dental caries. About 12 in

Developing an innovative chimeric multi-epitope subunit vaccine against Staphylococcus intermedius using an immunoinformatics strategy via Multi-omics approaches.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus intermedius is a major human pathogen associated with invasive diseases such as meningitis and endocarditis. These infections may lead to inflammation, fever, and cardiac damage. At present, no effective vaccine exists for prevention. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to design a stable, non-allergenic, and antigenic chimeric multi-epitope vaccine against S. intermedius using Immunoinformatics approaches. METHODS: Twelve B-cell, five helper T lymphocyte (HTL), and five cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) epitopes were predicted using advanced immunoinformatics tools. These epit

Culture-negative liver abscess identified with plasma microbial cell-free DNA sequencing: A case report.

Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is a potentially life-threatening disease. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial to ensure high-quality healthcare for patients with PLA. However, this is complicated by their non-specific clinical symptoms. In addition, the etiologic organisms responsible for PLA are frequently culture-negative, thus complicating clinical decision-making. Here, we report a case of PLA caused by Streptococcus intermedius, as identified via DNA metagenomic sequencing of plasma.

Streptococcus danieliae sp. nov., a novel bacterium isolated from the caecum of a mouse.

We report the characterization of one novel bacterium, strain ERD01G(T), isolated from the cecum of a TNF(deltaARE) mouse. The strain was found to belong to the genus Streptococcus based on phylogenetic analysis of partial 16S rRNA gene sequences. The bacterial species with standing name in nomenclature that was most closely related to our isolate was Streptococcus alactolyticus (97 %). The two bacteria were characterized by a DNA-DNA hybridization similarity value of 35 %, demonstrating that they belong to different species. The new isolate was negative for acetoin production, esculin hydroly

Predominant presence of Streptococcus anginosus in the saliva of alcoholics.

Chronic alcohol consumption is known to be a major risk factor for cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract. The incidence of esophageal cancer (4.4%) in alcoholics is reported to be much higher than that in the Japanese population as a whole (0.0001%). This suggests the presence of specific factors in chronic alcohol consumption-related carcinogenesis. Recently, data showing a significant correlation between Streptococcus anginosus and carcinogenesis in the upper aerodigestive tract have been reported. In this study, the ratio of S. anginosus to oral bacteria in the saliva of 38 alcoholic pat

New combination for the therapy of canine otitis externa. I. Microbiology of otitis externa.

In order to compound a new drug combination against canine otitis externa (OE), 515 dogs affected with OE were subjected to physical examination and microbiological analysis of their ear exudates. OE was erythematous-ceruminous in 83 per cent and suppurative in 17 per cent of the patient material. Erythematous-ceruminous inflammations were characterised by severe pruritus and accumulation of brownish, greasy cerumen in the auditory canal. The yeast Malassezia pachydermatis was isolated from the ears of 76 per cent of the dogs, often in combination with Staphylococcus intermedius bacteria. M pa

The clinical features of respiratory infections caused by the Streptococcus anginosus group.

BACKGROUND: The Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) play important roles in respiratory infections. It is ordinarily difficult to distinguish them from contaminations as the causative pathogens of respiratory infections because they are often cultured in respiratory specimens. Therefore, it is important to understand the clinical characteristics and laboratory findings of respiratory infections caused by the SAG members. The aim of this study is to clarify the role of the SAG bacteria in respiratory infections. METHODS: A total of 30 patients who were diagnosed with respiratory infections whi

Evaluation of Therapeutic and Biopharmaceutical Properties of a Biadhesive Dental Paste Based on a Complex Immunoglobulin Preparation.

A topical mucoadhesive dosage form was developed for the treatment of infectious oral cavity diseases, consisting of a paste based on a combination of a complex immunoglobulin preparation (CIP) and interferon alpha-2b. CIP within the final formulation demonstrated robust antimicrobial activity against key oral pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus intermedius, and Fusobacterium nucleatum). An optimal composition was selected that exhibited optimal mucoadhesion and a mucosal retention time of at least 90 min. The final formulation produced no local irritant effects.

Streptococcus Brain Abscess in a Healthy 30-Year-Old: A Case Report and Brief Review of Non-Neoplastic Mass-like Brain Lesions.

The reported case surrounds a previously healthy 30-year-old male who initially presented to primary care with acute vision changes. Further workup and imaging revealed an occipital mass lesion which appeared to enlarge after initiation of steroids. Debridement and specimen collection for culturing revealed an abscess growing Streptococcus intermedius. The consideration of a broad differential diagnosis for both neoplastic and non-neoplastic causes of tumor-like brain lesions is a critical component in accurate diagnosis and management in these rare cases.

Bacterial colonization on different suture materials--a potential risk for intraoral dentoalveolar surgery.

In this in vivo and in vitro study on resorbable (Monocryl and nonresorbable (Deknalon) monofilament sutures used in intraoral dentoalveolar surgery the bacterial colonization was compared. For the in vivo study the sutures were applied in 11 patients during dental surgery. Eight days postoperative the sutures were removed and the adhered bacteria were isolated and identified by biochemistry, morphology, antibiotic susceptibility, and gas chromatography. The colonization was studied by scanning electron microscopy. Aerobic and anaerobic bacteria were isolated in nearly equal colony-forming uni

Effective oral health in infective endocarditis: efficacy of high-street mouthwashes against the viridans group streptococci.

AIM: Recent UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines state that there is no longer a need for oral antibiotic prophylaxis in patients undergoing dental procedures who are at risk of infective endocarditis (IE), and advocate the importance of maintaining good oral health. As viridans group streptococci (VGS) are common etiological agents of IE and inhabitants of the mouth, the purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of common high-street mouthwashes against four classes of VGS organisms (salivarius, mitis, anginosus, and mutans groupings). METHODS: The surv

Airways microbiota: Hidden Trojan horses in asbestos exposed individuals?

Malignant pleura mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare type of cancer with devastating prognosis, which develops in the pleural cavity from transformed mesothelium. MPM has been directly associated with asbestos exposure however there are aspects of the pathophysiology involved in the translocation of asbestos fibers in the pleura that remain unclear. Here, we propose and discuss that certain proteins secreted by airways symbiotic microbiota create membrane pores to the airway epithelial cells, through which asbestos fibers can penetrate the lung parenchyma and reach the sub-pleural areas. We evaluate

Virulence factors of Streptococcus anginosus - a molecular perspective.

Streptococcus anginosus together with S. constellatus and S. intermedius constitute the Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG), until recently considered to be benign commensals of the human mucosa isolated predominantly from oral cavity, but also from upper respiratory, intestinal, and urogenital tracts. For years the virulence potential of SAG was underestimated, mainly due to complications in correct species identification and their assignment to the physiological microbiota. Still, SAG representatives have been associated with purulent infections at oral and non-oral sites resulting in absces

Serious infections due to penicillin-resistant strains of viridans streptococci with altered penicillin-binding proteins.

We investigated the mechanism of resistance to penicillin in two penicillin-resistant clinical isolates of viridans streptococci that caused life-threatening infections in two patients not receiving chronic penicillin therapy. The first was a strain of Streptococcus intermedius that was isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid of a patient with post-neurosurgical meningitis. The second was a strain of Streptococcus mitis recovered from the bloodstream of a leukemic patient with neutropenia. Both patients failed to respond to penicillin. The mechanism of resistance in these strains was associated

Diphtheria among alcoholic urban adults. A decade of experience in Seattle.

Three outbreaks of Corynebacterium diphtheriae infection occurred in Seattle's Skid Road from 1972 through 1982. The first involved a single toxigenic, intermedius biotype clone, whereas the second and third outbreaks involved nontoxigenic mitis and gravis strains. Of 1100 total infections, 947 (86%) were cutaneous. The incidence was highest in winter and spring. In Skid Road, the estimated attack rate during 17 months in 1974 to 1975 was 5% for whites and 27% for native Americans. Streptococcus pyogenes was isolated from 73% of diphtheritic and 41% of nondiphtheritic skin lesions (P less than

Sinogenic Subdural Empyema in an Adolescent: Multifocal Disease, Decompressive Craniotomy, and Complete Recovery.

Sinogenic subdural empyema is a rare and life-threatening complication of bacterial sinusitis. Non-specific symptoms tend to make early diagnosis and management challenging. We report the case of a previously healthy 16-year-old male who presented with a one-week history of upper respiratory symptoms and headache followed by a rapidly progressive neurologic deterioration. Multifocal subdural empyema was confirmed via multiparametric MRI. Use of Cell-Free DNA Testing to Diagnose Infective Endocarditis in a Patient With Negative Blood Cultures.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Its diagnosis can be especially challenging, as can the identification of a causative pathogen, which, in turn, is crucial for appropriate management. Here, we present a rare case of Streptococcus intermedius endocarditis complicated by lung and cerebral abscess in which clinicians employed cell-free deoxyribonucleic acid (cfDNA) testing to confirm the diagnosis, establish a causative pathogen, and determine appropriate antibiotic therapy. Notably, the positive cfDNA test prevented the need for brain biopsy in
