The main objective of this meta-analysis was to investigate handedness in post-traumatic stress disorder on a meta-analytical level. For this purpose, articles were identified via a search in PubMed, PsychInfo, PubPsych, ResearchGate, and Google Scholar. Studies reporting findings relating to handedness in PTSD patients and healthy controls were considered eligible. In total, k = 14 studies with an overall N of 2939 (747 PTSD patients and 2192 controls) were included in the study. Random-effects meta-analyses, as well as robust Bayes meta-analyses (RoBMA), were conducted for three comparisons:

INTRODUCTION: Neuroprogression has been proposed as the pathological rewiring of the brain that takes place in parallel with clinical and neurocognitive deterioration in the course of psychiatric disorders. This study aims to review the biological underpinnings and clinical outcomes related to neuroprogression in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
METHODS: We performed a systematic review by searching PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science for articles published between January 1, 1960, and January 6, 2020. Inclusion criteria were met when articles assessed brain changes, neurocognition, func

Background: Stress disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), are attracting much attention. However, the relationship between traumatic stress and inflammation is rarely discussed. Subjects and Methods: As studies have linked PTSD to altered susceptibility to various diseases, such a psychiatric condition may lead to long-term systematic changes in physiological functions. We searched PubMed with the keywords "traumatic stress," "stress disorders," "post-traumatic stress disorder," and "inflammation." Results: Based on 65 previously published studies, we reviewed the long-term

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), characterized by re-experiencing, avoidance, negative affect, and impaired memory processing, may develop after traumatic events. PTSD is complicated by impaired plasticity and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) activity, hyperactivity of the amygdala, and impaired fear extinction. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a promising candidate for treatment due to its multimodal action that enhances plasticity and calms hyperexcitability. CBD's mechanism in the mPFC of PTSD patients has been explored extensively, but literature on the mechanism in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN)

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) accompanies miscarriage, intrauterine fetal demise, and preterm birth. Levels of PTSD may be higher for women who experience acute, life-threatening events during labor and delivery. Severe maternal morbidities or near misses for maternal death disproportionately impact African American, Hispanic, American Indian, and women in rural communities. Expanding research demonstrates association between severe maternal morbidity or near-miss events and PTSD. Multiple preceding conditions and intrapartum and postpartum events place women at higher risk for PTSD. P

BACKGROUND: The stress experienced as an intense and traumatic event can increase the odds of orofacial pain, affect the biomechanics of masticatory system and compromise the periodontal health. This study was conducted to investigate the impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on oral health.
METHODS: A case-control study with a convenience sample was designed. Probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing, and plaque were recorded at 6 sites per tooth. A visual analog scale (VAS) was used to evaluate the pain after probing. The Research Diagnostic

Progress in clinical and affective neuroscience is redefining psychiatric illness as symptomatic expression of cellular/molecular dysfunctions in specific brain circuits. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been an exemplar of this progress, with improved understanding of neurobiological systems subserving fear learning, salience detection, and emotion regulation explaining much of its phenomenology and neurobiology. However, many features remain unexplained and a parsimonious model that more fully accounts for symptoms and the core neurobiology remains elusive. Contextual processing is

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common disorder with significant morbidity and associated comorbidities, including mood disorders and substance abuse, and is frequently misdiagnosed or under-diagnosed. Management of PTSD requires combined psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, but some symptoms, particularly nightmares and sleep disturbance, are often resistant to treatment.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to inform primary healthcare professionals of the prevalence and significance of PTSD, and to review the evidence that prazosin is a useful option for managing PTSD

BACKGROUND: In Germany, the one-month prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is in the range of 1% to 3%. Soldiers, persons injured in accidents, and victims of domestic violence increasingly seek medical help for symptoms of emotional stress. Days lost from work and monetary compensation for emotional disturbances are markedly on the rise. The term "PTSD" is commonly used uncritically and imprecisely, with too little regard for the existing diagnostic criteria. It is at risk of turning into a nonspecific collective term for emotional stress of any kind.
METHODS: We selectively r

Sleep disturbances are found in a majority of individuals diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The purpose of this literature review is to provide information about PTSD, in addition to assessing sleep quality. Current research observes that the lifetime prevalence of PTSD diagnosis in women is increasing. Although there are several studies that have been conducted to assess PTSD and sleep, there is a gap in the research that pertains to women, PTSD, and sleep quality. The current study will compile information on the subject to aid in decreasing the gender disparity in PTSD re

A year has passed since a major earthquake and tsunami hit northeastern Honshu, Japan in March 2011. Amidst mourning for the tens of thousands of victims, survivors have just begun the difficult and urgent tasks of rebuilding. Many survivors suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD causes chronic, long-term suffering for patients and their families and inevitably burdens social and medical care systems. This article tries to integrate PTSD evidence-based treatment experiences into a practical and detailed nursing intervention protocol for PTSD. We also elicit the function and ef

In the field of traumatic stress, chemoprophylaxis is a term that is often used but rarely well understood. There has been no shortage of debate on the issue, but few rigorous studies to ground the discussion. The purpose of the current paper is to explore the issues surrounding this contentious area. Databases including PubMed, PsychArticles and Web of Knowledge were searched using the key words 'chemo or pharmaco', 'prevention or prophylaxis', and 'PTSD or post-traumatic stress'. Relevant journals and reference lists of the papers obtained through this search were scanned for additional refe

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can result from a traumatic experience that elicits emotions of fear, helpless or horror. Most individuals remain asymptomatic or symptoms quickly resolve, but in a minority intrusive imagery and nightmares, emotional numbing and avoidance, and hyperarousal persist for decades. PTSD is associated with psychiatric and medical co-morbidities, increased risk for suicide, and with poor social and occupational functioning. Psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy are common treatments. Whereas, research supports the efficacy of the cognitive behavioral psychotherapies

Results obtained from clinical and psychopathological studies of 161 patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) aged 3-18 years with symptom durations from one month to four years are presented. Four major clinical variants of the type of PTSD were identified in children and adolescents: insomniac( 34.8%), phobic (23.6%), psychopathic-like (21.7%), and asthenic-depressive (19.9%). These variants, differing in terms of course and prognosis, occurred at different frequencies in different age and ethnic groups; there were no gender-related differences.

We conducted a systematic review of what is known about the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and smoking to guide research on underlying mechanisms and to facilitate the development of evidence-based tobacco treatments for this population of smokers. We searched Medline, PsychINFO, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and identified 45 studies for review that presented primary data on PTSD and smoking. Smoking rates were high among clinical samples with PTSD (40%-86%) as well as nonclinical populations with PTSD (34%-61%). Most studies showed a posit

Significant advances have been made in the past 5 years in defining efficacious treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Currently, sertraline is the first and only FDA-approved medication for this complex and often chronic illness. Other serotonergic antidepressants, such as paroxetine, fluoxetine and nefazodone, have well-controlled or replicated open-label evidence of efficacy. Anticonvulsants are also being studied as potential alternatives to treatment. Finally, atypical antipsychotic medications have shown promise in open-label trials. Clearly, more controlled studies are ne
