Meta-Analysis of Neuropsychological Studies in Panic Disorder Patients: Evidence of Impaired Performance during the Emotional Stroop Task.

BACKGROUND: Recent investigations have highlighted significant differences in verbal recall between patients with panic disorder (PD) and controls. These studies have highlighted that verbal memory and working memory could be impaired in PD. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the present meta-analysis is to confirm this hypothesis, reviewing the studies that have investigated neurocognitive testing in PD. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search for studies published between 1980 and 2015 that reported cognitive measurements in PD patients and controls. Effect size estimates were compu

Think the thought, walk the walk - social priming reduces the Stroop effect.

In the Stroop task, participants name the color of the ink that a color word is written in and ignore the meaning of the word. Naming the color of an incongruent color word (e.g., RED printed in blue) is slower than naming the color of a congruent color word (e.g., RED printed in red). This robust effect is known as the Stroop effect and it suggests that the intentional instruction - "do not read the word" - has limited influence on one's behavior, as word reading is being executed via an automatic path. Herein is examined the influence of a non-intentional instruction - "do not read the word"

Prospects for de-automatization.

Research by Raz and his associates has repeatedly found that suggestions for hypnotic agnosia, administered to highly hypnotizable subjects, reduce or even eliminate Stroop interference. The present paper sought unsuccessfully to extend these findings to negative priming in the Stroop task. Nevertheless, the reduction of Stroop interference has broad theoretical implications, both for our understanding of automaticity and for the prospect of de-automatizing cognition in meditation and other altered states of consciousness.

Prediction of incident overt hepatic encephalopathy using individual and composite measures of minimal hepatic encephalopathy: the PrO-MHE study.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Psychometric hepatic encephalopathy score (PHES) is the gold standard for minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE), predicts overt HE (OHE), but remains cumbersome for routine care. Point-of-care (POC) tests such as Stroop (EncephalApp) and Animal Naming Test (ANT) are simpler but assess narrower cognitive domains. We evaluated whether integrating POC domains into a composite score could improve the prediction of incident OHE. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 153 outpatients underwent PHES, Stroop, and ANT. The primary endpoint was incident OHE within 180 days; death and liver t

Factors influencing cognitive function in patients with Huntington's disease from China: A cross-sectional clinical study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant inherited neurodegenerative disorder caused by CAG repeats expansion. Cognitive decline contributes to the loss of daily activity in manifest HD. We aimed to examine the cognition status in a Chinese HD cohort and explore factors influencing the diverse cognitive domains. METHODS: A total of 205 participants were recruited in the study with the assessment by neuropsychological batteries, including the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), Stroop test, symbol digit modalities test (SDMT), trail making test (TMT), verbal flu

Closing-in Phenomenon in Huntington's Disease: A Neuropsychological Marker of Frontal/Executive Dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: In visuo-constructional tasks, patients may reproduce drawings near-to or superimposed on a model, showing the so-called "Closing-in" (CI), often ascribed to a defect in inhibitory control. CI has been described in neurological conditions, but no studies have explored CI in Huntington's disease (HD), a neurodegenerative disorder often involving the frontal cortical-subcortical circuits. We searched for the occurrence of CI in HD patients and systematically investigated its correlates to find a clinical marker of the frontal/executive dysfunctions in the early examination of HD patie

Pulmonary Function in Midlife as a Predictor of Later-Life Cognition: The Coronary Artery Risk Development in Adults (CARDIA) Study.

BACKGROUND: Studies found associations between pulmonary function (PF) and cognition, but these are limited by mostly cross-sectional design and a single measure of PF (typically forced expiratory volume in 1 second [FEV1]). Our objective was to prospectively analyze the association of repeatedly measured PF with cognition. METHODS: We studied 3 499 participants in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults cohort with cognition measured at year 25 (Y25) and Y30, and PF (FEV1 and forced vital capacity [FVC], reflecting better PF) measured up to 6 times from Y0 to Y20. Cognition was

Predicting the Risk of Huntington's Disease with Multiple Longitudinal Biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) has gradually become a public health threat, and there is a growing interest in developing prognostic models to predict the time for HD diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop a novel prognostic model that leverages multiple longitudinal biomarkers to inform the risk of HD. METHODS: The multivariate functional principal component analysis was used to summarize the essential information from multiple longitudinal markers and to obtain a set of prognostic scores. The prognostic scores were used as predictors in a Cox model to predict the right-cen

Nonconscious reading? Evidence from neglect dyslexia.

In this study we present evidence which supports the view that reading mechanisms, if implicit assessed, are available also in the presence of a severe deficit of spatial awareness. A Stroop-like task was performed by a right brain-damaged patient affected by severe extrapersonal neglect and neglect dyslexia. In reading words and color words, the patient showed the usual pattern of neglect errors; omission, substitution and addition errors. However, when asked to name the colors in which color words were written, naming time was found to be affected by the meaning of those words he was not abl

The Pictorial Fire Stroop: a measure of processing bias for fire-related stimuli.

Fire interest is a risk factor for firesetting. This study tested whether a fire-specific emotional Stroop task can effectively measure an information-processing bias for fire-related stimuli. Clinic-referred and nonreferred adolescents (aged 13-16 years) completed a pictorial "Fire Stroop," as well as a self-report fire interest questionnaire and several control tasks. Results showed (a) comparatively greater fire-specific attentional bias among referred adolescent firesetters, (b) a negative relationship between Fire Stroop attentional bias and self-reported fire interest, and (c) positive c

Cognitive control deficits in pediatric frontal lobe epilepsy.

Executive dysfunction and behavioral problems are common in children with epilepsy. Inhibition and shifting, both aspects of cognitive control, seem related to behavior problems and are thought to be driven mainly by the frontal lobes. We investigated if inhibition and shifting deficits are present in children with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). Secondly, we studied the relationship between these deficits and behavior problems. Thirty-one children were administered the Stroop Color Word Test and a digital version of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Parents completed the Behavioral Rating

Psychomotor epilepsy and psychosis. III. Social and psychological correlates.

In a controlled investigation of paranoid hallucinatory chronic or episodic epileptic psychoses, the social data, psychopathological symptoms and the psychological test findings (WAIS, Rorschach, object-sorting, proverb-interpretation and the Stroop test) were analyzed in order to delineate the characteristics of the psychotic syndrome and to evaluate the significance of organic etiological factors. The study comprised 45 patients with complex partial epilepsy followed by psychosis after median 23 years, and 34 control patients with the same type of epilepsy of median 30 years' duration. Among
