Perceived Social Support as a Statistical Indirect Pathway Linking Adverse Childhood Experiences to Risky Behaviors Among University Students: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a major public health concern associated with long-term health consequences and a range of risky behaviors. This study examined whether perceived social support statistically accounted for part of the association between ACEs and seven risky behavior dimensions among university students. Methods: This cross-sectional online survey included 524 students enrolled at a state university. Data were collected using a descriptive information form, the Adverse Childhood Experiences Scale, the Risky Behaviors Scale, and the Multidimensiona

Challenges in the transition to college: the perspective of the therapist back home.

The percentage of "emerging adults" in the United States going on to post-secondary education is at its highest rate ever. Most are successful academically and socially during the transition. Some students do not adapt as well. These students may settle down after an initial assessment and brief treatment on campus. Others seek help from or are referred to a local mental health practitioner. Among the population of highly stressed (often freshman-year) college students, there is a not-insignificant number who leave school. Often a return home is viewed by the teen and family as a "failure." Th

Decolonizing medical education: a systematic review of educational language barriers in countries using foreign languages for instruction.

BACKGROUND: Language barriers in medical education, particularly in countries where foreign languages are used as the medium of instruction, pose significant challenges for domestic medical students. These barriers hinder academic performance, comprehension, and communication with patients, ultimately impacting the quality of healthcare delivery. Despite the prevalence of this issue, a comprehensive understanding of its effects remains underexplored. This systematic review aims to synthesize evidence on language barriers in medical education and propose strategies to address them. METHODS: Fo

Grief, depression and psychotic-like experiences among bereaved college students: the predictive role of attitudes towards death.

Background: Bereavement may lead to heterogeneous psychological responses, including prolonged grief disorder (PGD), depression, and psychotic-like experiences (PLEs). Individuals' attitudes toward death may play a significant role in bereavement adjustment. Objective: This study aimed to identify latent subgroups of bereaved Chinese college students based on their symptom endorsement of PGD, depression, and PLEs, and to examine the predictive role of five specific death attitudes - fear of death, death avoidance, neutral acceptance, approach acceptance, and escape acceptance - on class members

Citizenship and education trajectories among children of immigrants: A transition-oriented sequence analysis.

During recent decades, the educational outcomes of the children of immigrants have been extensively studied, with a growing emphasis on the heterogeneity of the so-called second generation. Yet, the impact of host country citizenship on children's educational outcomes has only received limited attention so far, although children of immigrants do not get automatic birthright citizenship in most European countries. Focusing on the Netherlands, this paper compares educational trajectories among citizen and non-citizen children of immigrants. Register data and sequence analysis are used to map and

School suspension predicts trichomoniasis five years later in a matched sample.

BACKGROUND: Young adults who were suspended from school during adolescence are more likely than matched non-suspended youth to be arrested, on probation, or not graduate from high school, which are STI risk factors. This study evaluates whether suspension is a marker for STI risk among young adults who avoid subsequent negative effects. METHODS: This study evaluated whether suspension predicts a positive test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomoniasis in a urine sample using matched sampling in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent and Adult Health (Add Health), and evaluated potenti

Using academic admissions data to predict PA training attrition and academic difficulties: a survival analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: Research studying health professions' student attrition and academic difficulties generally treat these outcomes as dichotomous variables that obscure important time-varying aspects. Scant attention has been paid to incorporating time-varying methods, such as survival analysis, to model attrition and academic difficulties in health professions trainees. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study are to (1) identify when students were most likely to attrit from the program and/or experience academic probation and (2) identify predictors of time to attrition and academic probation usin

Profiling Vulnerability in Youth and Predicting Educational Attainment in Young Adulthood.

INTRODUCTION: Educational attainment is associated with higher rates of employment, income, and standard of living; yet leaving secondary school before completion of the final year remains common, particularly for youth experiencing disadvantage. This study aimed to identify key indicators of vulnerability, derived from a proposed framework of child disadvantage, that predicted early school leaving in a state-representative sample of Australian youth. METHODS: Data comprised 2884 participants (51.7% female; 48.3% male) across three age cohorts from the Australian arm of the longitudinal cohor

School Dropout, Absenteeism and Coverage of Sexual and Reproductive Health Services in South Africa: Are Those Most at Risk Reached?

School attendance or completion is important for adolescents' development. Adolescents who drop out or are regularly absent from school are at higher risk of adverse sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes. However, there is little evidence evaluating SRH service coverage among adolescents in and out of school. In the context of a large-scale combination HIV and pregnancy prevention intervention funded by the Global Fund, we compared the SRH intervention coverage and SRH risks among adolescent girls who dropped out of school with those who were still in school or who had completed grade

Temporal changes in the associations between diagnosed psychiatric disorders and dropping out of school early.

Psychiatric problems are risk markers for poor educational attainment. The number of adolescents receiving treatment has increased. We investigated whether the association between psychiatric problems in early adolescence and dropping out of school had changed. We used the register-based 1987 and 1997 Finnish Birth Cohort studies, which include all live births in Finland. Hospital districts with incomplete records were excluded, leaving 25,421 participants born in 1987 and 32,025 born in 1997. The main outcome was not having applied for secondary education by the year the cohort members turned

High school incompletion and childhood maltreatment among street-involved young people in Vancouver, Canada.

While the link between educational attainment and future health and wellness is well understood, little investigation has considered the potential impacts of distinct forms of childhood maltreatment on high school completion. In the present study, the relationship between five categories of childhood maltreatment (physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and physical and emotional neglect) and completion of high school education were examined using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). From September 2005 to May 2013, data were collected for the At-Risk Youth Study (ARYS), a cohort of street

Exploring the intersections of college student poverty, grief, and racial/ethnic identity: a scoping review protocol.

BACKGROUND: College students who experience the negative impact of poverty, such as food, financial, and housing insecurity, are at higher risk for poor academic performance. One recent study examined grief in a college student sample and found students with a diverse racial or ethnic background were more likely to experience prolonged grief disorder, however, did not examine poverty in their sample. To date, no known reviews have examined poverty by racial and ethnic identity and the experience of grief due to the death of a family member or friend, and no reviews have examined how these thre

[The impact of malnutrition on brain development, intelligence and school work performance].

The findings from several authors confirm that undernutrition at an early age affects brain growth and intellectual quotient. Most part of students with the lowest scholastic achievement scores present suboptimal head circumference (anthropometric indicator of past nutrition and brain development) and brain size. On the other hand, intellectual quotient measured through intelligence tests (Weschler-R, or the Raven Progressives Matrices Test) has been described positively and significantly correlated with brain size measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); in this respect, intellectual abi

Temporomandibular disorder as an indicator of altered physiological stress reactivity: a highly standardized experimental protocol.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are frequently associated with psychological stress. Their prevalence appears particularly high in populations exposed to substantial stress, such as students during examination periods. While subjective assessments have linked TMDs to psychological stress, physiological evidence remains limited. Heart rate variability (HRV) is an established biomarker of autonomic regulation and stress reactivity and may therefore be useful for characterizing stress responses in individuals with TMD symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated stress reactivity i

Hospital-based clinical training and low back pain in nursing students: prevalence, risk factors, and implications for nursing care.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is a common occupational health issue in nursing. Nursing students, often insufficiently trained in ergonomic practices, are particularly vulnerable. Despite its long-term implications for workforce retention and professional well-being, the timing of onset and progression of LBP in this population remain unclear, especially in hospital-based clinical training. In this study, we investigated the onset, prevalence, intensity, and predictors of LBP among nursing students, specifically focusing on the impact of clinical training. Our aim was to inform the developme
