Self-perceived confidence of health professions students at one university in caring for adults with intellectual disability (ID) was examined via an electronic survey using the Therapy Confidence Scale - Intellectual Disabilities (TCS-ID). A stepwise multiple regression of data collected from 232 completed surveys revealed that prior training and prior experience were predictors of TCS-ID total score. Adults with ID experience healthcare disparities due, in part, to poor provider communication and a lack of confidence. Results from this novel study suggest that opportunities for experiential

An experiment was conducted in the context of a problem-based learning course to investigate the influence of a learning-goal-free problem scenario on the quality and quantity of individual study. In half of the tutorial groups, the problem scenario was constructed in such a way that it provided useful learning issues (goal-specified condition), whereas in the other half of the tutorial groups, the problem scenario did not provide learning issues (goal-free condition). It was demonstrated that students in the goal-free condition read more articles, studied longer, and spent more time reporting

BACKGROUND: Interprofessional collaboration has become indispensable in chronic care. Embedding interprofessional education (IPE) in health-related curriculums can prepare students to be fit for practice in this interprofessional field. However, further research is required on the design of IPE to underpin and monitor modules. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a multi-day, student-led interprofessional module in enhancing interprofessional socialization and awareness concerning the benefits of IPC in chronic care among students with differing health-related backgrounds (i.e., M

This case report describes a 22-year-old female Ambulance Technician student who displayed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) false positivity following a recent hepatitis B vaccination. Occupational health clinicians who work in a healthcare setting (with healthcare staff and/or students) should be aware of the possibility of false-positive HIV screening test results, and where a false positive is suspected, they should consider what the underlying cause could be and should consider whether further medical investigation is required.

A serological study of 433 university students in various health care professions revealed levels of susceptibility of 2-7% for measles, 0-4% for mumps, 6-17% for poliomyelitis and a particularly disquieting 13-23% for rubella. Representing a developed population with a supposedly high level of immunisation cover these levels of susceptibility indicate students' vulnerability to outbreaks caused by viruses coming from reservoirs in under-immunised developing populations in the country. Nevertheless, no evidence of occupational exposure between the first- and final-year students was revealed. I

BACKGROUND: Health promotion in higher education may support sustainable health among future healthcare and social work professionals, who face elevated risk of poor health when entering working life. The aim of this study was to describe associations between general health, health-promoting resources, lifestyle factors, and social factors among final-semester students in nursing, healthcare, and social work programs and newly graduated nurses and healthcare and social work professionals. In addition, the study compared groups reporting excellent/very good general health with those reporting g

It is well established that emotions are organized around two motivational systems: the defensive and the appetitive. Individual differences are relevant factors in emotional reactions, making them more flexible and less stereotyped. There is evidence that health professionals have lower emotional reactivity when viewing scenes of situations involving pain. The objective of this study was to investigate whether the rating of pictures of surgical procedure depends on their personal/occupational relevance. Pertussis in healthcare workers is of particular concern, as they can be in contact with infected patients and may transmit the infection to susceptible patients, co-workers and other contacts. This study was carried out to examine the prevalence of pertussis antibodies in hospital personnel. A total of 487 healthcare workers > or = 25 years in age and students (19-24 years) in hospital training were recruited. The overall prevalence of pertussis antibody determined by ELISA was 51.7%. No significant differences on prevalence by age group (19-24, 25-34, 35-44 and > or = 45 years) and occupatio

INTRODUCTION: The number of deaths attributable to tobacco use is rising globally. Health professionals can help reduce tobacco use by providing advice to patients regarding smoking cessation. Very few studies have collected information on tobacco use and cessation counseling training among health professional students. The purpose of this paper is to examine these issues using data from the 2005 Lebanon Global Health Professions Student Survey (GHPSS).
METHODS: The 2005 Lebanon GHPSS includes nationally representative estimates of third-year students in all dental, medical, nursing, and phar

BACKGROUND: People who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) comprise a significant and increasing proportion of the population. They face many barriers to accessing good health care and major communication challenges with health professionals. There is evidence that DHH awareness training for health professionals needs improvement but little information about how such training is incorporated into curricula. The research question we address is how to develop and deliver an effective workshop for students led by people who, by definition, have barriers to communication due to hearing loss and dea

Stress is prevalent among health science students, particularly in rural settings where access to mental health resources is limited. Mobile health (mHealth) interventions offer a promising avenue for providing accessible support for stress management. This scoping review aims to identify existing mHealth interventions, evaluate their feasibility and acceptability, and explore the specific needs of students within these contexts. This scoping review will be conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley framework, a structured approach that consists of six stages: identifying the research question, s

The health and lifestyle problems of medical students and doctors give cause for concern on several fronts. We have developed a health policy for staff and students in Newcastle Medical School. This policy presents integrated recommendations relating to six key areas, i.e. alcohol, physical activity, sexual health, stress, occupational health and safety, and diet. The methods used to develop recommendations in relation to alcohol are described here. They were adopted by the working groups developing recommendations in the other areas. There were four key stages to policy development: establish
