"Hypertension Alert", a 1979-80 blood pressure screening-awareness project of the Yonkers Public Schools, used health aides to work with students and school personnel to determine the blood pressure of 5,399 elementary, middle and high school pupils in 52 public and parochial schools. Using a cutoff of 130/85 mm Hg, 140 students with higher initial readings were followed up by school nurses and nurse teachers. Of these, 36 were referred to their private care providers. "Hypertension Alert" was received warmly in the schools. Many students appeared to acquire "blood pressure consciousness". A c

Injuries disproportionately affect American Indian communities, yet few efforts focus on training students or building workforce capacity in injury and violence prevention (IVP) within these communities. To address this gap, a collaborative planning team from Diné College, Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, and Indian Health Service Injury Prevention Programme met biweekly during the 2023-2025 academic years to integrate IVP into undergraduate public health training. The collaboration incorporated IVP competencies into public health courses and supported student practicum expe

Homelessness is a compelling social and public health issue. Nurse educators are challenged to better prepare graduates to serve this growing segment of the population. Clinical experiences with those experiencing homelessness allow students a better understanding of this population and may foster more compassionate care. This pretest-posttest intervention study examined nursing students' attitudes toward homelessness before and after participation in a service-learning clinical rotation with families experiencing homelessness. Twenty-three students enrolled in a public health nursing course a

The expanding field of Veterinary Public Health places new demands on the knowledge and skills of veterinarians. Veterinary curricula must therefore adapt to this new profile. Through the introduction of case studies dealing with up-to-date issues, students are being trained to solve (real-life) problems and come up with realistic solutions. At the Department of Public Health and Food Safety of the Veterinary Faculty at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, positive experiences have resulted from the new opportunities offered by the use of information and communication technology (ICT)

This report describes the effective public health response to a measles outbreak involving a university campus in Brisbane, Australia. Eleven cases in total were notified, mostly university students. The public health response included targeted measles vaccination clinics which were established on campus and focused on student groups most likely to have been exposed. The size of the university population, social interaction between students on and off campus, as well as limited vaccination records for the university community presented challenges for the control of this extremely infectious il

Evidence suggests that primary and secondary vaccine failure have contributed to recent university-based mumps outbreaks. We describe the epidemiology and public health management of two such outbreaks that occurred simultaneously in two areas of the North West of England, affecting four universities, using data from routine surveillance, serology testing, and telephone interviews and electronic questionnaires. Vaccination status was obtained from GP records. Cases were predominantly first year students living in university halls of residence. Public health response involved active surveillanc

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption is a widespread public health issue, contributing to numerous health conditions, particularly non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In Nigeria, alcohol is culturally significant, often associated with socializing and respect. However, early alcohol use and high consumption rates among university students pose serious health risks. Peer health education has shown promise as an intervention to reduce risky health behaviours, including alcohol use. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study involved university students in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, assessing alcohol consu

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic's global impact has been profound, particularly for vulnerable populations, such as asylum seekers, refugees, and immigrants. Likewise, international students, who fall under the immigrant category umbrella, have faced considerable challenges throughout the pandemic. This study aimed to identify insights for enhancing Japanese international students' health and well-being by investigating how epidemic prevention policies implemented by schools and the government influenced changes in their lifestyles during the post-pandemic era.
METHODS: Semi-structured in

This paper describes the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program at The University of the West Indies and its role in building public health capacity in the English-speaking Caribbean. DrPH reports, student assessments and external reviews were used to describe the development of the DrPH program. The program was established in 2009 as a part-time competency-based program over 4-7 years delivered by face-to-face and distant learning modules, electives, field placements, and research leading to a thesis. DrPH scholars have made significant contributions to public health in the Caribbean through

Substance use is prevalent among youth in postconflict African countries and is associated with a number of public health problems such as poverty, child homelessness, and school truancy. This qualitative study explores the risk factors associated with substance use among Liberian youth from the perspective of public-school students. Nine focus groups were conducted with 72 Liberian public-school students (35 female, 37 male). Multiple risk factors for substance use among Liberian youth were identified through qualitative analysis, including emotional instability, gender, fear of academic fail

PROBLEM: Sexual minority youths are youths who identify themselves as gay or lesbian, bisexual, or unsure of their sexual identity or youths who have only had sexual contact with persons of the same sex or with both sexes. Population-based data on the health-risk behaviors practiced by sexual minority youths are needed at the state and local levels to most effectively monitor and ensure the effectiveness of public health interventions designed to address the needs of this population.
REPORTING PERIOD COVERED: January 2001-June 2009.
DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM: The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance

Limited research has examined the ways in which public health training programs equip students to address health disparities affecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and other sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations. This study outlines the availability of public health curricula on SGM health topics, and the prevalence of LGBT and SGM-inclusive institutional support services across CEPH-accredited U.S. schools of public health. Content analysis of all course offerings related to gender and sexuality revealed a limited focus on sexual and gender minority heal
