Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease of poverty ranks second among the most widespread parasitic disease in various nations in sub-Saharan Africa. Neglected tropical diseases are causes of about 534,000 deaths annually in sub-Saharan Africa and an estimated 57 million disability-adjusted life-years are lost annually due to the neglected tropical diseases. The neglected tropical diseases exert great health, social and financial burden on economies of households and governments. Schistosomiasis has profound negative effects on child development, outcome of pregnancy, and agricultural pr

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Chromolaena odorata (L.) R.M. King & H. Rob. (Asteraceae) is a scrambling perennial shrub that originated in the Americas, but is now common in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Oceania, where it has become a serious weed. The species, particularly the biotype found in Asia and West Africa, has many ethnopharmacological uses, including treatment of malaria, wounds, diarrhoea, skin infection, toothache, dysentery, stomach ache, sore throat, convulsions, piles, coughs and colds. Furthermore, no attempt has been made to synthesise and review the available literature on

Groundwater is a major source of drinking water for millions of people around the world. Over 400 million people in Africa depend solely on it as their main source of water supply. Fluoride is a common contaminant in groundwater. In low concentration (0.5-1.0 mg/L), fluoride is needed by humans for healthy development of bones and teeth, however, a concentration >1.5 mg/L has been linked with several fluorosis and non-fluorosis diseases. Dental and skeletal fluorosis are the major fluorosis diseases commonly reported with the consumption of fluoride-rich water. Although fluoride intake through

Cancer is a complex global health issue that continues to overburden healthcare systems worldwide. Estimates suggest that the burden of cancer will double in the next decade, further straining healthcare systems if effective interventions are not scaled up. One critical barrier to scaling up cancer interventions is the shortage of the cancer workforce, which is particularly severe in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in sub-Saharan Africa, many of which do not have a single oncologist. Task shifting offers a potential strategy to expand the cancer workforce. However, there is limited ev

The low uptake of postpartum family planning contributes to around 80 million unplanned pregnancies globally each year. Despite the postpartum period being crucial for preventing unintended pregnancies, modern contraceptive use remains low in Sub-Saharan Africa, with notable regional differences. This study aims to assess the pooled prevalence of modern contraceptive use, its spatial variation, and associated factors among postpartum women in Sub-Saharan Africa, utilizing data from recent Demographic Health Surveys (2015-2023). A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from 27 Sub-Sa

INTRODUCTION: Despite global progress in reducing HIV incidence, adolescent girls and young women in sub-Saharan Africa remain disproportionately affected. Biomedical HIV prevention tools such as pre-exposure prophylaxis, condoms and HIV testing are effective but underutilized, especially within facility-based models. Schools represent consistent and scalable contact points for reaching adolescent girls and young women, yet evidence on the feasibility, accessibility and effectiveness of school-based biomedical HIV prevention interventions remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aim

Women account for 59% of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection cases in sub-Saharan Africa. This impacts the increase in mother-to-child HIV transmission rates and presents challenges to preventive care for mother-to-child transmission. A scoping review of the scientific evidence was then developed to identify the barriers and facilitators faced by health professionals in providing services to prevent mother-to-child transmission of this virus in sub-Saharan Africa. The PubMed and CINAHL databases were accessed, and the keywords "barriers, facilitators, HIV, prevention of mother-to-chil

Hepatitis B virus remains a major health challenge among migrants from high-endemic regions arriving in low-endemic countries like Italy. However, more evidence on both infection burden and immunity gaps among asylum seekers is needed to inform prevention policies. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 739 asylum seekers screened for Hepatitis B virus (HBV) in Modena, Northern Italy, between 2019 and 2023. Serological testing included quantitative determination of HBsAg, HBcAb, and HBsAb, allowing identification of active infection, natural immunity, vaccine-induced immunity, and suscep

G6PD deficiency (G6PD-D) variants are associated with lower hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) concentrations, raising concerns about the diagnostic efficacy of HbA1c for abnormal glucose tolerance (Abnl-GT) in Africans, in whom risk of G6PD-D and Abnl-GT is high. G6PD-D is assessed using genotyping or an enzymatic assay, but because G6PD-D is X-linked, the enzymatic assay is necessary for determining status for women heterozygous for deficiency variants. We assessed: 1) ability of HbA1c to detect Abnl-GT by G6PD-D; 2) concordance of genotyping and enzymatic assay for G6PD-D in sub-Saharan Africans living

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa carries the greatest burden of HIV-infection with increasing drug resistance burden, which requires improved patient management and monitoring. Current WHO recommendations suggest transitioning to dolutegravir-based (adults) or raltegravir-based-regimens (neonates) for initial antiretroviral therapy (ART) and as a suitable alternative in cases of multi-resistance in resource-limited settings. This review aims at synthesizing the current knowledge on dolutegravir use and integrase resistance-associated mutations found before the wide use of dolutegravir-based regi

Iron deficiency anaemia is a major health problem affecting approximately 1.2 billion people worldwide. Young children, women of reproductive age and pregnant women living in sub-Saharan Africa are the most vulnerable. It is estimated that iron deficiency accounts for half of anaemia cases. Apart from nutritional deficiency, infection, inflammation and genetic factors are the major drivers of anaemia. However, the role of genetic risk factors has not been thoroughly investigated. This is particularly relevant in African populations, as they carry high genetic diversity and have a high prevalen

BACKGROUND: Long COVID is a condition characterized by persistent symptoms of COVID-19 that continue to occur in patients after apparent recovery. Given that, these symptoms may vary from person to person due to clinical, demographic, and genetic factors as well as comorbidities, our review aims to identify and analyze risk factors associated with persistent symptoms of COVID-19 (long COVID) in the specific context of sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: Article searches were conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, African Journals Online (AJOL), Science Direct and Google Scholar databases using the keyword

BACKGROUND: Despite the well-established link between delayed initiation of antenatal care (ANC) and negative pregnancy and childbirth outcomes, a substantial proportion of women in sub-Saharan Africa continue to begin ANC late in their pregnancies. The previous studies failing to incorporate the most current information, confined to a single country or small number of nations and employed statistically flawed proportional hazard models with violated assumptions compromising the reliability of the conclusions. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the timely initiation of ANC and its dete

INTRODUCTION: Glucose is a major determinant of fetal growth, but its relative contribution in different ethnic groups or populations is not fully understood. The Hyperglycaemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome (HAPO) Study established a relationship between glucose and birth weight in multiple ethnic groups. However, the HAPO Study did not include any cohorts from sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where 17% of the world population lives. This study aims to address this in a cohort study from Uganda.
METHODS: We compared the relationship between oral glucose tolerance test measures and fetal outcomes in

BackgroundAdolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) face a disproportionate HIV risk. Achieving UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets requires high diagnostic coverage, yet critical gaps persist. This multi-country study evaluated individual- and community-level factors associated with HIV testing across 21 SSA nations.MethodsSecondary data analysis was performed on a pooled sample of 92,935 young women (ages 15-24) from recent Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) across 1,678 primary sampling units (clusters). Multi-level mixed-effects logistic regression was utilized to assess in

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health crisis, especially in low-and middle-income countries where antibiotic access is insufficiently regulated and health systems are under-resourced. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the community is often the primary site of antibiotics decision-making, shaped by informal markets, structural barriers, and cultural norms. This study investigates antimicrobial use behaviours, perceptions of AMR, and motivations for inappropriate antibiotics use and what might motivate future change, among diverse communities in Nigeria. Using a mixed-methods design, d

BACKGROUND: Men engaged in transactional sex (METS) represent a neglected key population in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), yet little is known about their burden of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and associated factors. This study assessed the prevalence of self-reported STIs (SR-STI) and identified individual, community, and country-level determinants among this group. METHODS: We analyzed pooled recent nationally representative Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from 26 SSA countries. This study included 10,128 men who reported engagement in transactional sex within the past 12 mont

The sickle cell trait-asymptomatic carriage is frequent in people originating from sub-Saharan Africa. Several host factors (including sickle cell anemia) have been previously reported to act upon the course of HIV disease. We studied the progression of infection in a cohort of African patients heterozygous for the sickle hemoglobin gene and harboring normal hemoglobin genes. No significant difference was evidenced between the two groups from this preliminary study.

International migration from Sub-Saharan African countries to the European Union and the United States has significantly increased over the past decades. Although the vast majority of these immigrants are young and healthy people, a minority can be affected by chronic conditions eventually leading to solid organ transplantation (SOT). Importantly, these candidates can bear geographically restricted fungal and parasitic latent infections that can reactivate after the procedure. An appropriate evaluation before transplantation followed by treatment, whenever necessary, is essential to minimize s

Non-typhoidal Salmonella is an important burden, particularly in developing countries of the African region. We report for the first time in Angola, a sub-Saharan African country with commercial/travel relationships with Europe, an unexpectedly high occurrence of Salmonella (n = 12/63, 19%) from a high diversity of sources, particularly farm and wild animals. The detection of diverse serotypes (n = 12), involving putative new S. enterica subsp. salamae serotypes, is also of note, reinforcing the need for a comprehensive surveillance in Angola critical to identify animal/food/environmental sour
