Influence of the State of the Subarachnoid Space of the Cranial Base in Hydrocephalus Resolution after Endoscopy.

Objective To compare the resolution rate of hydrocephalus after endoscopy (predominantly endoscopic third ventriculostomy [ETV]) using flexible endoscopes during a 5-year period in patients with a permeable and a nonpermeable subarachnoid space (SAS). Material and Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study of the videos and records of 150 hydrocephalic patients chosen randomly who underwent ETV (and other endoscopic procedures) with a flexible endoscope. The patients were classified into two groups based on the neuroendoscopic findings. The first group included patients with a permeable

Measurement of the normal ventricular system and supratentorial subarachnoid space in children with computed tomography.

The normal ventricular system and subarachnoid space were evaluated on the CT scans of 155 children chosen from 1,400 pediatric CT examinations, and linear measurements were made. The left septum-caudate distance was greater than the right, and the width of the left anterior horn and size of the skull were larger in boys. The interhemispheric and sylvian fissures, the third ventricle and Evans' ratio were larger in the younger group (less than 3 years) than in the older (greater than or equal to 3 years), while the opposite was found for the cella media index and size of the skull. The size of

Evaluation of Association of Prematurity with Benign Enlargement of Subarachnoid Space in Infants Referred for Macrocephaly.

INTRODUCTION: Benign enlargement of subarachnoid space (BESS) is one of the causes of macrocephaly in infants. The aetiology of this condition remains a subject of controversy, with poor cerebrospinal fluid absorption as the most commonly believed underlying theory. Prematurity has been suggested as possible risk factor; however, this is a topic of debate with paucity of data. In this study, we investigated association of prematurity with BESS in our cohort of patients. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients seen in outpatient neurosurgical BESS clinic (period 2016-2023) was carried out.

Morphology of the murine choroid plexus: Attachment regions and spatial relation to the subarachnoid space.

The choroid plexus has recently been identified as a possible migration route for peripheral immune cells into the central nervous system. For future investigation of this route, profound knowledge of the morphology of the murine choroid plexus is a prerequisite. We here present a detailed morphological description of the murine choroid plexus, its attachment regions as well as its spatial relation to the subarachnoid space. We used micro-computed tomography of immersion-contrasted fixated brains to generate three-dimensional models of the ventricle system and the choroid plexus and aligned mi

Effects of fluid structure interaction in a three dimensional model of the spinal subarachnoid space.

It is unknown whether spinal cord motion has a significant effect on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure and therefore the importance of including fluid structure interaction (FSI) in computational fluid dynamics models (CFD) of the spinal subarachnoid space (SAS) is unclear. This study aims to determine the effects of FSI on CSF pressure and spinal cord motion in a normal and in a stenosis model of the SAS. A three-dimensional patient specific model of the SAS and spinal cord were constructed from MR anatomical images and CSF flow rate measurements obtained from a healthy human being. The area

Intracranial pressure measurement in infants presenting with progressive macrocephaly and enlarged subarachnoid spaces.

INTRODUCTION: For subarachnomegaly in infants with enlarged external and internal CSF spaces clear treatment decisions, such as observation or ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) shunting, are still lacking. The aim of this study is to measure intracranial pressure (ICP) in these patients to elucidate treatment necessity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven children presenting with macrocephaly, moderately enlarged ventricles, and subarachnoid spaces on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) without neurological deficits or other CSF-associated pathological conditions were enrolled. Continuous ICP recording was co

Adrenergic innervation of the vasa nervorum in the cranial nerves and spinal roots in the subarachnoid space.

Fluorescence microscopy revealed that the innervation of the vasa nervorum of both cranial and spinal nerve roots in the subarachnoid space in the monkey is adrenergic in nature. The endoneurium of the cranial nerve roots contained free adrenergic nerve fibers which were not related to the vessel wall.

Spontaneous migration of a bullet in the spinal subarachnoid space causing delayed radicular symptoms.

The authors report a case of a gunshot wound to the left lower quadrant of the abdomen in a patient who initially was neurologically intact. The bullet had lodged at the T-11, T-12 level in the spinal canal. After an exploratory laparotomy, the patient developed severe low back pain radiating to his left lower extremity and an incomplete footdrop. Repeat x-ray films and a myelogram showed that the bullet had migrated to the L-4, L-5 level on the left. Bullet emboli and delayed sequelae of gunshot wounds to the spine are discussed.

[Cystic dilatations of the subarachnoid space at the lumbo-sacral level. Clinical and therapeutic aspects].

The cystic dilation of the sub-arachnoidal space individualised by Tarlov in 1938, may be integrated in the diagnosis of non discal surgical sciatica. The classification proposed by Lazorthes sumes up the eventualities encountered at the lombo-sacral level. The clinical study of five personal observations and the analysis of literature enable the establishment of a clinical picture evoking the anomaly. It would appear that the affection is characterised by lumbago or lumbo-sciatica, the attacks separated by free intervals. In an acute period the algia lessens in the Trendelenbourg position. A

Enhancement of subarachnoid space during magnetic resonance imaging of endolymphatic hydrops: a case report.

Enhancement of the subarachnoid space after intravenous administration of gadolinium contrast agent is not common. Enhancement usually occurs in pathological conditions that increase the permeability of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, most notably in meningitis. We herein describe possible subarachnoid enhancement in patients with no apparent effect on the meninges. These patients had clinical signs of Meniere's disease and underwent specific magnetic resonance imaging of the inner ear to possibly visualize endolymphatic hydrops. The endolymphatic space can be noninvasively imaged by in

Temporal changes of spinal subarachnoid space patency after graded spinal cord injury in rats.

INTRODUCTION: Disturbances in spinal subarachnoid space (SSAS) patency after SCI have been reported as an incidental finding, but there is a lack of information on its in vivo extent and time course. For substances and cells carried in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to reach damaged neural tissue and promote reparative processes, CSF must be able to flow freely in SASS. OBJECTIVE: To characterise the extent and time course of SSAS patency disruption in vivo in a rat model after graded SCI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Anaesthetised rats were subjected to mild or severe cord contusion at T9. Estimat

Rare sonographic finding of osteogenesis imperfecta type 2: fluid retention in the subarachnoid space.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) type 2 is the most severe form of this osteogenetic disorder. A 26-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for suspected fetal hydrocephalus at 26 weeks' gestation. Detailed ultrasonographic examination revealed fluid retention in the subarachnoid space. The fetal head was expanded, and the skull bone was easily deformed by the pressure of the ultrasound probe. Pleural effusion and ascites were noted, and the upper and lower extremities were extremely shortened and deformed. On helical 3D-CT, the skull bones could not be imaged, and multiple rib fractures and d

Clearance of erythrocytes from the subarachnoid space through cribriform plate lymphatics in female mice.

BACKGROUND: Atraumatic subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Proposed mechanisms for red blood cell (RBC) clearance from the subarachnoid space (SAS) are erythrolysis, erythrophagocytosis or through efflux along cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage routes. We aimed to elucidate the mechanisms of RBC clearance from the SAS to identify targetable efflux pathways. METHODS: Autologous fluorescently-labelled RBCs along with PEGylated 40 kDa near-infrared tracer (P40D800) were infused via the cisterna magna (i.c.m.) in female reporter mice for lymphatics or f

Three-dimensional computational modeling of subject-specific cerebrospinal fluid flow in the subarachnoid space.

This study aims at investigating three-dimensional subject-specific cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics in the inferior cranial space, the superior spinal subarachnoid space (SAS), and the fourth cerebral ventricle using a combination of a finite-volume computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) experiments. An anatomically accurate 3D model of the entire SAS of a healthy volunteer was reconstructed from high resolution T2 weighted MRI data. Subject-specific pulsatile velocity boundary conditions were imposed at planes in the pontine cistern, cerebellomedul

Age-related brain-region-specific changes in diffusion anisotropy in subarachnoid space of young adults.

The glymphatic system theory postulates that brain waste is removed through the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow. According to this theory, CSF in the subarachnoid space (SAS) moves to the perivascular space around the penetrating arteries, flows into parenchyma to mix with interstitial fluid and brain waste, and then moves to the perivenous space to be flushed out of the brain. Despite the controversies about the glymphatic theory, it is clear that SAS plays a key role in waste clearance. For instance, the SAS around the middle cerebral artery is known to be highly involved in glymphatic influx
