AIM: Oxidative stress (OS) in subjects with primary hypothyroidism under therapy with L-T4 might be the cause of the side effects commonly found with this treatment.
METHODS: Twenty-four subjects of both sexes (11 M and 15 F), aged between 41 and 61 years, with primary hypothyroidism were assessed. All the subjects were followed for 30 days during the administration of a fixed dose of 75 μg of L-T4. Levels of T4, T3, TSH, hydroperoxides (as measure of OS ), hs-CRP were determined in plasma before and after the treatment. Side effects (anxiety/agitation, sweating, palpitations and headache) an

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is currently classified as an anxiety disorder in DSM-IV, and as a neurosis or stress-related disorder in ICD-10. It shares many features with depression. Sensitivity to carbon dioxide (CO2), a classic provocation agent in the proto-typical anxiety disorder, panic disorder, has not been tested in PTSD. Twenty rigorously ascertained drug-naïve subjects with PTSD inhaled a single vital capacity inhalation of 35% CO2; before and after the inhalation they completed measures of PTSD and panic anxiety, and were rated for the presence of a panic attack. These res

To gain some quantitative understanding of the nature and properties of stress wave propagation and the pathological characteristics of lung injuries, pressure values at eight sites in the lungs during an impact period were recorded. The lung injury severity scores in the corresponding regions were determined in 11 dogs, which were subjected to blunt, left lateral impact at a velocity of 16.33 m/sec with a 24.5% compressive response. The results showed that the pressure value at the contact point was the greatest and that pressure decreased significantly from left side to right side. However,

The investigation was apt at studying the relationship between urinary metabolites of serotonin and catecholamine (5-HIAA and VMA), T-cells (OKT3+), T-helper (OKT4+), T-suppressor (OKT8+) and B-cells (EAC-rosette forming cells) in normal (10 subjects, 1 female, 9 male, age 21 +/- 5 years) and stress administered subjects (20 subjects, 3 female, 17 male, age 20 +/- 4 years). The levels of urinary 5-HIAA and VMA and numbers of OKT3+, OKT4+, OKT8+ and B-cells increased significantly in subjects administered with bicycle ergometry stress as compared to normal controls. The numbers of B-cells rose

This study was conducted to explore the effect of the zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) supplement on the regulatory appetite and heat stress (HS) genes in broiler chickens raised under high or normal ambient temperatures. In this study, 240 one-day-old male broiler chicks (Cobb 500) were randomly assigned to 48 battery cages. From day 1, these 48 cages were randomly subjected to four different treatment strategies: Control (wherein, their basal diet included 60 mg/kg of ZnO), ZNONPs 40 (wherein basal diet included 40 mg/kg of ZnONPs), ZnONPs 60 (basal diet included 60 mg/kg of ZnONPs), and Zn

Psychosocial stress leads to a release of cortisol. While this psychoneuroendocrine response helps to maintain physiological as well as psychological equilibrium under stress, exaggerated secretion of cortisol has been shown to have negative effects on somatic health and cognitive functioning. The study set out to examine the long-term effects of cognitive-behavioral stress management training on cortisol stress responses in healthy men and women. Eighty-three healthy subjects were randomly assigned to cognitive-behavioral stress management (CBSM) training or a control condition. Four months a

The study investigated the mediating role of depression in the association between subjective academic achievement and suicide behaviour. Further, we sought to find out whether financial stress would moderate such a plausible mediated relationship. A cross-sectional survey was used in the study. Out of 460 undergraduate students sampled for the study, 51.5% were male (Meanage = 20.7; SD = 3.19). We observed that subjective academic achievement has a positive effect on depression, which in turn has a positive impact on suicide behaviour. And this relationship is not influenced by financial stre

BACKGROUND: Nurses experience subjective stress and challenges in the context of caring for patients with delirium. These stresses can cause psychological damage to nurses and may affect the quality of delirium care. However, few multicentre studies have empirically explored the risk factors for subjective stress among nurses caring for patients with delirium. This study aimed to investigate the status of and risk factors for subjective stress among nurses caring for patients with delirium.
METHODS: A multicentre, cross-sectional survey was conducted between November and December 2023 among a

OBJECTIVE: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is associated with posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs) and sleep disturbance into adulthood. The latter is thought to emerge from dysregulation in biobehavioral systems, including nighttime hyperarousal; however, studies investigating specific mechanisms to explain these long-term sleep problems are limited. The present study examined presleep arousal, fear of sleep, and the cortisol awakening response (CAR) as putative mediators between PTSS and sleep disturbance in women with a history of CSA.
METHOD: N = 64 cis-gendered women with a self-reported h

The Trier Social Stress Test for children (TSST-C) adapted from TSST is one of the most commonly used laboratory paradigms for investigating the effects of stress on cognitive, affective and physiological responses in children and adolescents. Considering that laboratory procedures generate a significant amount of stress to children and adolescents, even in the absence of a stress paradigm, it is important to validate TSST-C against an inactive control condition in which the stress components were absent. Using a randomized design, we tested an inactive control condition, which replaced the TS

Considering the protective effect of physical activity against coronary heart disease, the estimation of endurance capacity is not only recommended for sportsmen but is also useful for exercise counselling of unfit persons. Endurance capacity can be estimated with test protocols leading to complete exhaustion, or by submaximal test procedures. Submaximal tests have the advantage of putting less stress on subjects than maximal test protocols; on the other hand, they are less accurate. As a complement to traditional submaximal test protocols based on heart rate analysis, a new submaximal protoco

Physiological (heart rate, blood pressure, electrodermal activity), biochemical (epinephrine, norepinephrine, cortisol) and subjective parameters (self-rating score) of 33 patients with panic disorder (diagnoses according to DSM-III-R) before, during and after stress exposure were compared with those of healthy controls. As stressors a video containing frightening scenes (FS), mental arithmetic (MA), a video documenting a patient suffering from a panic attack (PA) and an improvised speech (IS) were applied. We found significantly higher baseline levels of electrodermal activity (EDA) and norep

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of resilience, alexithymia and the subjectively perceived severity (fear of death, pain intensity, helplessness) of myocardial infarction (MI) on posttraumatic symptom severity (PTSS) after MI. Patients were assessed with the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS), Resilience Scale (RS-11) and Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Subjectively perceived severity of MI was measured with three items on a 10-point Likert scale. To test our hypothesis, we applied Pearson correlations as well as multiple hierarchical linear regression analyses. A high

Major depressive disorder (MDD) has a complex etiology and is characterized by a change in mood and psychophysiological state. MDD has been shown to mediate accelerated biological aging in patients, although the underlying mechanism is not well understood. In the present study, we used a chronic mild stress (CMS) paradigm to induce anhedonia, one of the main symptoms of MDD. CMS induced depression-like symptoms in rats, including reduced sucrose preference and increased immobility time in the forced swim test. Moreover, stressed rats travelled a shorter total distance, had fewer grid line cros

To improve the quality of life of animals, understanding of stress-induced changes is necessary. Previously, we established a subchronic and mild social defeat stress (sCSDS) model in mice, which showed significantly higher body weight gain, food intake, and water intake compared to control mice. In this study, we elucidated metabolic profiles of plasma, liver, and urine in sCSDS mice by using metabolome and biochemical analyses. There was no significant difference between defeated and control mice in the plasma metabolites. In the liver of sCSDS mice, levels of taurocyamine (GES), phosphorylc
