[Therapy of stomach ulcer with sucralfate and ranitidine. A multicenter double-blind study].

134 outpatients with acute benign gastric ulcer confirmed by endoscopic biopsy received either 1 g sucralfate suspension four times daily or one 150 mg ranitidine tablet twice daily for six to 12 weeks in a multicentre therapy study (double-blind study according to the double-dummy technique). After six to 12 weeks, respectively, 56% and 82% of the ulcers had healed in the sucralfate group. The rates of healing in the ranitidine group were 72% and 88%, respectively. The differences in the rates of healing between sucralfate and ranitidine were not statistically significant. Ranitidine was supe

Comparison of sucralfate and cimetidine in the treatment of duodenal and gastric ulcers. A multicenter study.

Sixty-three outpatients with endoscopically proven duodenal ulcer and 58 with gastric ulcer were treated under single-blind conditions with either sucralfate, 4 g daily, or with cimetidine, 1 g daily. Endoscopy was performed after 4 weeks and again after 6 weeks if the ulcer had not healed. Among the duodenal ulcer patients, 22 of 31 (71.0%) who received sucralfate and 24 of 32 (75.0%) who received cimetidine were healed after 4 weeks. After 6 weeks, the overall healing rate was 96.8% in the sucralfate group and 96.9% in the cimetidine group. Of 28 gastric ulcer patients who received sucralfat

Sucralfate does not ameliorate acute radiation proctitis: randomised study and meta-analysis.

AIMS: During pelvic radiotherapy, many patients develop radiation-induced gastrointestinal symptoms, which may interfere with treatment. Prophylaxis during radiotherapy should ideally prevent acute reaction and the development of delayed injury. Sucralfate, an aluminium sucrose octasulphate, has been used for acute and delayed radiation side-effects. However, conflicting results have been published. We report here a prospective, randomised, placebo-controlled study of prophylactic sucralfate during pelvic radiotherapy. In addition, a meta-analysis of available data from the literature has been

[Sucralfate and bezoars: data from the system of pharmacologic vigilance and review of the literature].

A bezoar is a mass of undigested material which may form within the lumen of the gut. Some drugs have the potential to form bezoars. In the majority of patients, there is a clear predisposing factor. We present here the data of the French System of Pharmacovigilance on sucralfate and a literature review. Two distinct populations were involved: 16 adults and 5 newborn babies. All were hospitalized in intensive care units. The children were very low birth weight newborn babies, all of whom presented with abdominal distension or acute occlusion. The abdominal radiograph revealed an opaque mass fi

Healing of chronic antral gastritis: effect of sucralfate and colloidal bismuth subcitrate.

BACKGROUND: Colloidal bismuth subcitrate (CBS) causes endoscopic and histological improvement in gastritis and eradication of Helicobacter pylori in patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD). The effect of sucralfate, a cytoprotective drug, on endoscopic and histologic gastritis and H pylori clearance is not clear. We studied the effect of CBS and sucralfate on these features in patients with NUD. METHODS: Sixty three patients with NUD and H pylori infection were randomized to receive one of the following for four weeks: (i) CBS (240 mg twice daily) (Group 1); (ii) placebo I, similar in size, c

Medication-nutrient interactions: hypophosphatemia associated with sucralfate in the intensive care unit.

Clinically significant medication-nutrient interactions are of concern to the nutritional support practitioner. To emphasize the possible effect of the aluminum-containing medication sucralfate on serum phosphorus levels, patients admitted to the intensive care unit of a small private hospital were monitored for a 4-week period. Sixteen patients demonstrated low serum phosphorus levels; eight (50%) of these were receiving sucralfate. Eighteen patients had no low phosphorus levels measured; five (28%) patients in this group were receiving sucralfate. The hypophosphatemia observed in these patie

Sucralfate versus cimetidine in reflux oesophagitis. The effect on oesophageal pH and motility.

Sixty patients with endoscopically verified oesophagitis entered a double-blind study comparing the effect of 1 g of sucralfate granulate given four times a day and cimetidine, 400 mg twice a day. Fifty-two patients, 26 treated with cimetidine and 26 with sucralfate, were examined with short-term pH monitoring before and after 12 weeks of treatment. In about half of the patients, 19 treated with cimetidine and 11 treated with sucralfate, the oesophageal motility was studied with a radionuclide test before and after treatment. The sucralfate treatment did not affect either mean pH or the emptyi

Antacid and sucralfate-induced hypophosphatemic osteomalacia: a case report and review of the literature.

A 42-year-old woman presented to our institution with a 2-week history of bone pain in the lower extremities. Her history was remarkable for duodenal ulcer and long-term treatment with a magnesium-aluminum hydroxide antacid (Maalox) and sucralfate. Initial laboratory studies showed severe hypophosphatemia and elevated alkaline phosphatase and serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D levels. Bone scan showed multiple areas of increased uptake consistent with osteomalacia and microfractures. The patient recovered completely following withdrawal of antacids and sucralfate and short-term treatment with phosp

A comparison of sucralfate and prednisolone enemas in the treatment of active distal ulcerative colitis.

Sucralfate is well established in the treatment of upper gastrointestinal inflammation and ulceration, and preliminary evidence suggests it may be of benefit in active colitis. We have therefore undertaken a clinical trial to compare enemas of sucralfate (4 g) and prednisolone metasulphobenzoate (20 mg) in the treatment of active distal ulcerative colitis. Forty-four patients were entered into a 4-week study. Two patients were withdrawn because of non-compliance, and five were unable to complete the study: two developed constipation (both allocated to sucralfate) and three were unable to retai

Bile salt binding by maalox, sucralfate, and meciadanol: in vitro and clinical comparisons.

Inhibition of gastric acid secretion is a major factor in protecting the gastric mucosa, although other mechanisms such as bile salt binding may contribute to the protective properties of individual agents. Sucralfate, antacid (Maalox), and Meciadanol, a new flavonoid, were compared with cholestyramine resin for binding bile salts. The free, glycine, and taurine conjugates of the human bile salts, cholate, chenodeoxycholate, and deoxycholate, were incubated with each of the above. Cholestyramine resin adsorbed 91-97% of all bile salts tested. Meciadanol adsorbed all of the bile salts fairly we
