OBJECTIVE: To explore prevalence and patterns of suicidal attempts in persons with anorexia nervosa (AN).
METHODS: Participants were the first 432 persons (22 male, 410 female) enrolled in the NIH funded Genetics of Anorexia Nervosa Collaborative Study. All participants had current or lifetime AN. The authors conducted the analysis of 93 case histories of soldiers who were subjected to clinic observation in two four-year periods owing to suicide attempts. It was shown that the most frequent psychiatric diagnoses following observation were disadaptative syndromes (36.6%) and abnormal personality (32.3%). The reason for suicide attempts of the soldiers were mostly adjustment difficulties (45.2%) and conflicts of premature release from army (79%).

During an 8-month period a total of 117 battered wives, all seeking emergency surgical care, were identified. Twenty-two of the battered wives were found to have made 82 suicide attempts during the 16-year study period. OBJECTIVE: With the goal of ultimately finding early suicide predictors, the authors undertook a study of aborted suicide attempts. They defined such an attempt as an event in which an individual comes close to attempting suicide but does not complete the act and thus sustains no injury.
METHODS: The authors interviewed a random sample of 135 adult psychiatric inpatients concerning their past suicidal behavior. Using standardized scales, they assessed suicidal intent for aborted suicide attempts and actual suicide attempts, as well as degree of injury for actual attempts.

This study explored depressed adolescent inpatients' (N = 158) experiences of exposure to friends' and family members' suicidal behaviors. Most of the participants (n = 102, 64.6%) reported exposure to suicide-related behavior.
