Direct detection of the sulfur trioxide radical anion during the horseradish peroxidase-hydrogen peroxide oxidation of sulfite (aqueous sulfur dioxide).

The ESR spectrum of SO3- is observed directly during the oxidation of (bi)sulfite to sulfate by horseradish peroxidase. This radical exhibits a single line at g = 2.0031. The SO3-radical can be trapped with nitrosobenzene, yielding an ESR spectrum with coupling constants AN = 12.3 G,AHp = AHo = 2.4 G, and AHm = 0.9 G, and a g-value of 2.0053. SO3- is an intermediate in the two-step reduction of peroxidase Compound I by (bi)sulfite at physiological pH. At low pH, no SO3- is observed, which indicates a direct, one-step, two-electron reduction of Compound I. The pH at which the mechanism changes

Trends of deposition fluxes and loadings of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the artificial Three Northern Regions Shelter Forest across northern China.

This study provides the first estimate of dry deposition fluxes of criteria air pollutants (SO2 and NOx) across the Three Northern Regions Shelter Forest (TNRSF) region in Northern China and their long-term trends from 1982 to 2010 using the inferential method. Dry deposition velocities of SO2 and NOx increased in many places of the TNRSF up to 118.2% for SO2 and 112.1% for NOx over the last three decades due to the increased vegetation coverage over the TNRSF. The highest atmospheric deposition fluxes of SO2 and NOx were found in the Central-North China region, followed by the Northeast and t

Rapid analysis of sulfur mustard oxide in plasma using gas chromatography-chemical ionization-mass spectrometry for diagnosis of sulfur mustard exposure.

Sulfur mustard (SM) is the most utilized chemical warfare agent in modern history and has caused more casualties than all other chemical weapons combined. SM still poses a threat to civilians globally because of existing stockpiles and ease of production. Exposure to SM causes irritation to the eyes and blistering of skin and respiratory tract. These clinical signs of exposure to SM can take 6-24 h to appear. Therefore, analyzing biomarkers of SM from biological specimens collected from suspected victims is necessary for diagnosis during this latent period. Here, we report a rapid, simple, and

Biogeochemical oxidation of calcium sulfite hemihydrate to gypsum in flue gas desulfurization byproduct using sulfur-oxidizing bacteria.

Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) is a well-established air treatment technology for coal and oil combustion gases that commonly uses lime or pulverized limestone aqueous slurries to precipitate sulfur dioxide (SO2) as crystalline calcium salts. Under forced oxidation (excess oxygen) conditions, FGD byproduct contains almost entirely (>92%) gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), a useful and marketable commodity. In contrast, FGD byproduct formed in oxygen deficient oxidation systems contains a high percentage of hannebachite (CaSO3·0.5H2O) to yield a material with no commercial value, poor dewatering characterist

Turning the Sulfur Dial: Strategic Oxidation-State Manipulation in Modern Drug Discovery.

Sulfur occupies a distinct niche in the toolkit of a medicinal chemist. Unlike oxygen, sulfur rationalized by ionic-resonance, negative hyperconjugation into low-lying σ* orbitals, and high polarizability of its 3p valence shell, accommodates the oxidation states from -2 to +6, adopting a diverse range of molecular geometries. Such properties position sulfur as a tunable element that contributes to drug molecules beyond passive lipophilic bulk. The proportion of sulfur-containing motifs among newly FDA-approved small-molecule drugs has increased from approximately 11% in 2020 to about 20% in 2

Marine Sulfur Oxidation Amplifies Gaseous Organosulfate Formation in a Coastal Urban Atmosphere.

While sea breezes are commonly considered a natural cleansing process for coastal cities, their contribution to marine sulfur chemistry and subsequent organic aerosol formation remains poorly constrained. Using nitrate chemical ionization atmospheric pressure interface time-of-flight mass spectrometry in Xiamen, China, we tentatively assigned 16 gaseous organic sulfur species consistent with organosulfates (OSs) from biogenic and anthropogenic precursor classes. The species showed distinct diurnal patterns, indicating compound-dependent photochemical production and gas-particle exchange. Marin

Study on sulfur-resistant Pd-based catalysts for high-efficiency oxidation of VOCs.

Sulfur-resistant stability of palladium-based catalysts is important for the long-time and efficient VOCs oxidation. Therefore, palladium-based catalysts with bimetallic alloy system could be designed to regulate the dynamic behavior of ethane (the representative of the VOCs) on active sites in the presence of H2S. Results showed that Pd-Mo/Al2O3 catalyst kept a high-efficient and stable conversion of ethane (ca. 100 %) for 160 h at 500°C, indicating its excellent sulfur resistance. The sulfur-poisoning and sulfur resistance mechanism of Pd-Mo alloy was revealed by XPS, SO2-TPD, and DFT et al.

Sulfur-DMSO promoted oxidative coupling of active methylhetarenes with amines: access to amides.

The elemental sulfur-DMSO couple was found to efficiently promote the oxidative coupling of active methylhetarenes with amines to yield amides under simple heating conditions. When 2-methylquinoline was used as the methylhetarene component, the formation of the expected 2-quinolinecarboxamides from anilines could be efficiently catalyzed by iron, nickel and cobalt salts. The method displayed good functional group tolerance and was applicable to aromatic, heteroaromatic and aliphatic amines. Other substrates such as phenylacetic acid, dibenzyl disulfide, and benzylamine could act as competent p

Roles, mechanism of action, and potential applications of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria for environmental bioremediation.

Sulfur (S) is a crucial component in the environment and living organisms. This work is the first attempt to provide an overview and critical discussion on the roles, mechanisms, and environmental applications of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB). The findings reveal that key enzymes of SOB embarked on oxidation of sulfide, sulfite, thiosulfate, and elemental S. Conversion of reduced S compounds was oxidatively catalyzed by various enzymes (e.g. sulfide: quinone oxidoreductase, flavocytochrome c-sulfide dehydrogenase, dissimilatory sulfite reductase, heterodisulfide reductase-like proteins). Oxidation of sulfur dioxide by nitrogen dioxide accelerated at the interface of deliquesced aerosol particles.

Although the multiphase chemistry of SO2 in aerosol particles is of great importance to air quality under polluted haze conditions, a fundamental understanding of the pertinent mechanisms and kinetics is lacking. In particular, there is considerable debate on the importance of NO2 in the oxidation of SO2 in aerosol particles. Here experiments with atmospherically relevant deliquesced particles at buffered pH values of 4-5 show that the effective rate constant for the reaction of NO2 with SO32- ((1.4 ± 0.5) × 1010 M-1 s-1) is more than three orders of magnitude larger than the value in dilute s

Leachability of metals from waste incineration residues by iron- and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria.

Hazardous waste disposal via incineration generates a substantial amount of ashes and slags which pose an environmental risk due to their toxicity. Currently, these residues are deposited in landfills with loss of potentially recyclable raw material. In this study, the use of acidophilic bioleaching bacteria (Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans, and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans) as an environmentally friendly, efficient strategy for the recovery of valuable metals from incineration residues was investigated. Zinc, Cobalt, Copper, and Manganese from three different inci

Evaluation of antioxidant status and oxidative stress markers in thermal sulfurous springs residents.

Sulfurous springs have been traditionally used in medical treatment for different purposes. These beneficial effects of sulfurous water have been attributed to the presence of sulfurous compounds mainly in the form of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The purpose of the present study is to explore the effects of long-term exposure to sulfurous springs on oxidative stress and antioxidant biomarkers responses in individuals who lived nearby the sulfurous springs. The studied area was Al- Hammah sulfurous springs, which is located in the northern part of the Jordan Rift Valley and host many sulfurous sprin

Sulfur Dioxide Accelerates the Heterogeneous Oxidation Rate of Organic Aerosol by Hydroxyl Radicals.

There remains considerable uncertainty in how anthropogenic gas phase emissions alter the oxidative aging of organic aerosols in the troposphere. Here we observe a 10-20 fold acceleration in the effective heterogeneous OH oxidation rate of organic aerosol in the presence of SO2. This acceleration originates from the radical chain reactions propagated by alkoxy radicals, which are formed efficiently inside the particle by the reaction of peroxy radicals with SO2. As the OH approaches atmospheric concentrations, the radical chain length increases, transforming the aerosol at rates predicted to b

Iron-sulfur cluster synthesis, iron homeostasis and oxidative stress in Friedreich ataxia.

Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) is an autosomal recessive, multi-systemic degenerative disease that results from reduced synthesis of the mitochondrial protein frataxin. Frataxin has been intensely studied since its deficiency was linked to FRDA in 1996. The defining properties of frataxin - (i) the ability to bind iron, (ii) the ability to interact with, and donate iron to, other iron-binding proteins, and (iii) the ability to oligomerize, store iron and control iron redox chemistry - have been extensively characterized with different frataxin orthologs and their interacting protein partners. This v

Involvement of NADPH oxidase in sulfur dioxide-induced oxidative stress in plant cells.

Bisulfite, a major form of SO2 in aqueous phase of apoplast, may reduce photosynthesis rate and thereby crop yield through inducing reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, ROS production was directly detected in a living cell of leaf of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) using laser scanning confocal microscopes with the assistance of the fluorescence probe dichlorofluorescin diacetate (H2DCF-DA). Results showed that, under bisulfite stress, a large quantity of ROS indicated by DCF fluorescence was produced in epidermic tissue. The role of plasma membrane (PM) NADPH oxidase in bisulfite-indu

[Auxotrophy and utilization of oxidized and reduced mineral sulfur forms by Brevundimonas diminuta strains].

Connection between auxotrophy of Brevundimonas diminuta strains for sulphur-containing amino acids and presence of oxidized or reduced sulphur forms in the medium has been shown. When grown in synthetic medium supplied with sulphate or sulphite B. diminuta strains required cystine, biotin, pantothenate and vitamin B12 for growth and utilized very limited spectrum--from 8 to 12--carbon sources. In the presence of 5 g/l of thiosulphate in the medium instead of mentioned sulphur-containing salts strains of this species did not require cystine and assimilated the ammonium nitrogen. The intensity o
