Efficacy and role of inulin in mitigation of enteric sulfur-containing odor in pigs.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy and role of inulin in the mitigation of enteric sulfur-containing odor gases hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) and methyl mercaptan (CH3 SH) in pigs were examined in this study. Twelve Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire male finisher pigs (60.7 ± 1.9 kg), housed individually in open-circuit respiration chambers, were randomly assigned to two dietary groups, namely basal diet (control) and basal diet supplemented with 1% (w/w) inulin. At the end of the 45 day experiment, pigs were slaughtered and volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration, sulfate radical (SO42- ) concentration, populatio

Microbial community structure in deep natural gas-bearing aquifers subjected to sulfate-containing fluid injection.

In the natural gas field located in central Japan, high concentrations of natural gases and iodide ions are dissolved in formation water and commercially produced in deep aquifers. In the iodine recovery process, the produced formation water is amended with sulfate, and this fluid is injected into gas-bearing aquifers, which may lead to infrastructure corrosion by hydrogen sulfide. In this study, we examined the microbial community in aquifers subjected to sulfate-containing fluid injection. Formation water samples were collected from production wells located at different distances from the in

Effects of plant downtime on the microbial community composition in the highly saline brine of a geothermal plant in the North German Basin.

The microbial biocenosis in highly saline fluids produced from the cold well of a deep geothermal heat store located in the North German Basin was characterized during regular plant operation and immediately after plant downtime phases. Genetic fingerprinting revealed the dominance of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and fermentative Halanaerobiaceae during regular plant operation, whereas after shutdown phases, sequences of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) were also detected. The detection of SOB indicated oxygen ingress into the well during the downtime phase. High 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and

Bacterial formation of phosphatic laminites off Peru.

Authigenic phosphatic laminites enclosed in phosphorite crusts from the shelf off Peru (10 degrees 01' S and 10 degrees 24' S) consist of carbonate fluorapatite layers, which contain abundant sulfide minerals including pyrite (FeS(2)) and sphalerite (ZnS). Low delta(34)S(pyrite) values (average -28.8 per thousand) agree with bacterial sulfate reduction and subsequent pyrite formation. Stable sulfur isotopic compositions of sulfate bound in carbonate fluorapatite are lower than that of sulfate from ambient sea water, suggesting bacterial reoxidation of sulfide by sulfide-oxidizing bacteria. Hydrogen sulfide formation control and microbial competition in batch anaerobic digestion of slaughterhouse wastewater sludge: Effect of initial sludge pH.

High sulfur content in excess sludge impacts the production of biomethane during anaerobic digestion, meanwhile leads to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) formation in biogas. Effect of initial sludge pH on H2S formation during batch mesophilic anaerobic digestion of slaughterhouse wastewater sludge was studied in this paper. The results demonstrated that when the initial sludge pH increased from 6.5 to 8.0, the biogas production increased by 10.1%, the methane production increased by 64.1%, while the H2S content in biogas decreased by 44.7%. The higher initial sludge pH inhibited the competition of sulf

[Microbiological and production characteristics of the high-temperature Kongdian bed revealed during field trial of biotechnology for the enhancement of oil recovery].

Microbiological technology for the enhancement of oil recovery based on the activation of the stratal microflora was tested in the high-temperature horizons of the Kongdian bed (60 degrees C) of the Dagang oil field (China). This biotechnology consists in the pumping of a water-air mixture and nitrogen and phosphorus mineral salts into the oil stratum through injection wells in order to stimulate the activity of the stratal microflora which produce oil-releasing metabolites. Monitoring of the physicochemical, microbiological, and production characteristics of the test site has revealed large c

Bacterial periphytic communities related to mercury methylation within aquatic plant roots from a temperate freshwater lake (South-Western France).

Macrophyte floating roots are considered as hotspots for methylmercury (MeHg) production in aquatic ecosystems through microbial activity. Nevertheless, very little is known about periphyton bacterial communities and mercury (Hg) methylators in such ecological niches. The ability to methylate inorganic Hg is broadly distributed among prokaryotes; however, sulfate-reducers have been reported to be the most important MeHg producers in macrophyte floating roots. In the present work, the periphyton bacterial communities colonizing Ludwigia sp. floating roots were investigated through molecular met

The short-term effects of ocean acidification on the epiphytic bacterial community of Sargassum thunbergii via high-throughput sequencing.

Marine macroalgae and their epiphytic bacteria have established a symbiotic relationship. Although the effects of ocean acidification (OA) on macroalgae have been extensively studied, its impact on these epiphytic bacteria remains unclear. This study investigated the OA-induced shifts in the epiphytic bacterial community of Sargassum thunbergii from Qingdao's intertidal zone using 16S rDNA sequencing. The results indicated that elevated CO2 altered bacterial community structure and function, reducing diversity while maintaining dominant taxa but significantly changing their relative abundances

Sulfur-Oxidizing Bacteria: Potential Contributors to High-Quality Protein Production Coupled with CO2 Utilization.

The global protein gap is widening due to population growth, and traditional sources, such as soybeans, are insufficient. Single-cell proteins provide another option, but heterotrophic bacteria emit CO2 during production, and the production by alga protein is restricted by light supply. Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) can use reduced sulfur and CO2 to synthesize bacterial protein with a high methionine content, which can be used as a supplement to animal feed. So SOB are potential protein producers coupled with CO2 utilization. However, their efficiency is still low compared to heterotrophic b

Microbial community dynamics and coexistence in a sulfide-driven phototrophic bloom.

BACKGROUND: Lagoons are common along coastlines worldwide and are important for biogeochemical element cycling, coastal biodiversity, coastal erosion protection and blue carbon sequestration. These ecosystems are frequently disturbed by weather, tides, and human activities. Here, we investigated a shallow lagoon in New England. The brackish ecosystem releases hydrogen sulfide particularly upon physical disturbance, causing blooms of anoxygenic sulfur-oxidizing phototrophs. To study the habitat, microbial community structure, assembly and function we carried out in situ experiments investigatin

Insights into effects of thermotolerant nitrifying and sulfur-oxidizing inoculants on nitrogen-sulfur co-metabolism in sewage sludge composting.

In this study, high temperature thermotolerant nitrifying bacteria (TNB) and high temperature thermotolerant sulfide oxidizing bacteria (TSOB) were obtained from compost samples and inoculated into sewage sludge (SS) compost. The effects of inoculation on physical and chemical parameters, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide release, nitrogen form and sulfur compound content change and physical-chemical properties during nitrogen and sulfur conversion were studied. The results showed that inoculation of TNB and TSOB increased the temperature, pH, OM degradation, C/N ratio and germination index (GI) of

Bioreduction mechanisms of high-concentration hexavalent chromium using sulfur salts by photosynthetic bacteria.

Eliminating "sulfur starvation" caused by competition for sulfate transporters between chromate and sulfate is crucial to enhance the content of sulfur-containing compounds and improve the tolerance and reduction capability of Cr(VI) in bacteria. In this study, the effects of sulfur salts on the Cr(VI) bioremediation and the possible mechanism were investigated in Rhodobacter sphaeroides SC01 by cell imaging, spectroscopy, and biochemical measurements. The results showed that, when the concentration of metabisulfite was 2.0 g L-1, and the initial OD600 was 0.33, the reduction rate of R. sphaer

Sediment microbial community structure and mercury methylation in mercury-polluted Clear Lake, California.

Spatial and temporal variations in sediment microbial community structure in a eutrophic lake polluted with inorganic mercury were identified using polar lipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. Microbial community structure was strongly related to mercury methylation potential, sediment organic carbon content, and lake location. Pore water sulfate, total mercury concentrations, and organic matter C/N ratios showed no relationships with microbial community structure. Seasonal changes and changes potentially attributable to temperature regulation of bacterial membranes were detectable but were less im

In vitro batch cultures of gut microbiota from healthy and ulcerative colitis (UC) subjects suggest that sulphate-reducing bacteria levels are raised in UC and by a protein-rich diet.

Imbalances in gut microbiota composition during ulcerative colitis (UC) indicate a role for the microbiota in propagating the disorder. Such effects were investigated using in vitro batch cultures (with/without mucin, peptone or starch) inoculated with faecal slurries from healthy or UC patients; the growth of five bacterial groups was monitored along with short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production. Healthy cultures gave two-fold higher growth and SCFA levels with up to ten-fold higher butyrate production. Starch gave the highest growth and SCFA production (particularly butyrate), indicating sta

Cupriavidus pinatubonensis JMP134 Alleviates Sulfane Sulfur Toxicity after the Loss of Sulfane Dehydrogenase through Oxidation by Persulfide Dioxygenase and Hydrogen Sulfide Release.

An incomplete Sox system lacking sulfane dehydrogenase SoxCD may produce and accumulate sulfane sulfur when oxidizing thiosulfate. However, how bacteria alleviate the pressure of sulfane sulfur accumulation remains largely unclear. In this study, we focused on the bacterium Cupriavidus pinatubonensis JMP134, which contains a complete Sox system. When soxCD was deleted, this bacterium temporarily produced sulfane sulfur when oxidizing thiosulfate. Persulfide dioxygenase (PDO) in concert with glutathione oxidizes sulfane sulfur to sulfite. Sulfite can spontaneously react with extra persulfide gl

The Sulfur Microbial Diet and Risk of Colorectal Cancer by Molecular Subtypes and Intratumoral Microbial Species in Adult Men.

INTRODUCTION: We recently described the sulfur microbial diet, a pattern of intake associated with increased gut sulfur-metabolizing bacteria and incidence of distal colorectal cancer (CRC). We assessed whether this risk differed by CRC molecular subtypes or presence of intratumoral microbes involved in CRC pathogenesis (Fusobacterium nucleatum and Bifidobacterium spp.). METHODS: We performed Cox proportional hazards modeling to examine the association between the sulfur microbial diet and incidence of overall and distal CRC by molecular and microbial subtype in the Health Professionals Follo

Mechanical effects and volatile sulfur compound-reducing effects of chewing gums: comparison between test and base gums and a control group.

OBJECTIVE: Chewing gum may act as a masking or a therapeutic agent against the different chemical compounds that are responsible for oral malodor. An open-label exploratory study investigated the effect of mastication and aromatic components of chewing gum on reducing oral volatile sulfur compounds. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Twelve dental students (5 males and 7 females) acted as their own controls. Toothbrushing stopped 12 hours before observations. Measurements included organoleptic and volatile sulfur compound scores and the pH of the anterior and posterior zones of the dorsal tongue. Measurem

Mitigating sulfur disproportionation during autotrophic denitrification in sulfur packed-bed reactors for groundwater nitrate removal.

Sulfur packed-bed bioreactor (S0-PBR) for sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SADN) process exhibit significant potential for groundwater nitrate remediation owing to their cost-effectiveness. However, sulfide accumulation resulting from the sulfur autotrophic disproportionation (SADP) significantly limits its engineering application. In this work, synergistic regulation of a S0-PBR was achieved by controlling sulfur particle size and empty bed contact time (EBCT), enabling highly efficient ex situ nitrate removal from groundwater while significantly mitigating sulfur disproportionation. The s

Potential Fossilized Sulfide-Oxidizing Bacteria in the Upper Miocene Sulfur-Bearing Limestones From the Lorca Basin (SE Spain): Paleoenvironmental Implications.

The sulfur-bearing limestones interbedded in the upper Miocene diatomaceous sediments (Tripoli Formation) of the Lorca Basin (SE Spain) are typified, as other Mediterranean coeval carbonate and gypsum deposits, by filamentous, circular and rod-shaped microstructures of controversial origin. These features have been interpreted both as fecal pellets of brine shrimps and/or of copepods, remains of algae or cyanobacteria and fossilized sulfide-oxidizing bacteria. To shed light on their origin, a multidisciplinary study including optical, UV and scanning electron microscopy, Raman microspectroscop

Sulfate availability drives the reductive transformation of schwertmannite by co-cultured iron- and sulfate-reducing bacteria.

Schwertmannite (Sch) is a highly bioavailable iron-hydroxysulfate mineral commonly found in acid mine drainage contaminated environment rich in sulfate (SO42-). Microbial-mediated Sch transformation has been well-studied, however, the understanding of how SO42- availability affects the microbial-mediated Sch transformation and the secondary minerals influence microbes is relatively limited. This study examined the effect of SO42- availability on the iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB) and SO42--reducing bacteria (SRB) consortium-mediated Sch transformation and the resulting secondary minerals in tur
