Sun exposure in childhood has been implicated as a risk factor for the development of melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers. As an increasing number of young children are cared for in day-care centers, we were interested in examining the sun-protection practices in this setting. In our study of day-care centers, we found that while most day-care center staff were aware of the adverse effect of excess sun exposure and the need for sun protection, the use of sunscreen and protective clothing and avoidance of midday sun were limited. We conclude that intensive education of day-care center staff a

Sunscreens were available in ancient societies, such as Egypt, Greece, Arabia, and Japan, often to help keep the skin lighter and more fashionable. With the promotion of a tan as a sign of a leisurely, privileged lifestyle came the discovery of the harmful effects of sunlight on the skin. These include skin cancer, discovered by Unna and experimentally confirmed by Findlay, which paved the way for sunscreens to be used as protectors rather than just skin lighteners. The sun protection factor was born out of the recognition of the need to assess the ability of sunscreens to protect against skin

During childhood, parents play a vital role in sun protection of their children. Their guidance is essential for avoiding excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, a risk factor for developing skin cancer in later life. In a population-based cross-sectional study conducted between October 2011 and February 2012, we assessed how 3281 parents implemented sun protection for their three- to six-year-old children in practice. In particular, clothing, shade-seeking behavior, wearing of sunhats and sunglasses, use of sunscreens and the amount of time spent outdoors were ascertained in two set

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates the feasibility and impact of conveying personalized sun protection message supported by a UV photograph of the face in Switzerland.
METHODS: 440 adults from 14 private and public sites associated with high sun exposure received a skin cancer prevention intervention composed of a facial UV-filtered photograph and individual counselling by a trained registered nurse. Pre-/post intervention surveys assessed sun protection of participants, their skin cancer risk and reasons for behavioural change.
RESULTS: The range of facial UV spots' count per individual was v

Excessive exposure to sunlight during early childhood increases the risk of developing skin cancer. Self-administered questionnaires exploring sun-protection knowledge, practices and policy were mailed to the directors/coordinators/senior teachers of all known early childhood services in Queensland, Australia, in 2002 (n = 1383; 56.5% response). Most (73.7%) services had a written sun-protection policy (SPP). However, 40.6% of pre-schools and kindergartens had not developed a written SPP. Most directors had moderate knowledge about sun-protection (median score: 7/12 [IQR 6, 8]), but few unders

Sunscreens with different sun protection factors were examined for their ability to prevent sunburn cell formation in human skin exposed to ultraviolet radiation from a xenon solar simulator. There was either complete or partial protection against the cytotoxic effects of ultraviolet radiation. Protection was related to the sun protection factor of the sunscreen and to the dose of radiation administered.

Persons who sunbathe or engage in other activities at the beach are exposed to large amounts of UV radiation. Four hundred seven adults who visited the beaches of Puerto Rico were surveyed to determine their knowledge about the risks of sun exposure and to evaluate sunscreen use. The group consisted of 195 year-round Puerto Rican residents and 212 tourists. Ninety-five percent believed that the sun can cause skin cancer, although only half of the subset who lived all year in Puerto Rico believed that they personally received enough exposure to be at risk. The majority of the group (83%) unders

Valid and reliable psychosocial measures for parents are lacking in the children's sun protection literature. We examined the construct validity and reliability of measures of parents' self-efficacy and perceived barriers specific to four sun protection behaviors in children: sunscreen, clothing, shade and limiting time outdoors. Melanoma survivors (N = 205) with children aged 12 years and younger completed an interview. Confirmatory factor analyses supported a four-factor structure of self-efficacy in which each factor was specific to one of the sun protection behaviors. This structure, consi

BACKGROUND: New research has attributed increased significance to the causal link between ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation and immunosuppression and carcinogenesis. In the United States, sunscreens are labeled with only their sun protection factor (SPF) and an imprecise term "broad-spectrum protection." Sunscreen marketing and efficacy evaluations continue to be based primarily on skin redness (sunburn) or erythema. We sought to evaluate the ultraviolet (UV) protection offered by common sunscreen products on the US market using laboratory-measured UV-absorption testing and comparing with computer

It is now a clearly established fact that ultraviolet radiation is involved in the induction of skin cancer such as carcinoma and melanoma. The most efficient means of protection is by using clothes. For uncovered areas, it is essential to apply a sun product. For some time, various authors have been wondering about the inefficiency or indeed the dangerousness of sun products. Cases of sunburn are still just as frequent in children. We have chosen to study the influence of the quantity of sun product applied on the skin on the level of efficiency obtained. Twenty commercially-available product

Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a major risk factor for skin cancer, yet sun protection behaviors vary widely across different populations. This study examines the association between sun protection behaviors and educational attainment among Brazilian adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the Brazilian Surveillance System for Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases by Telephone Survey (Vigitel) from 2007 to 2010. Sun protection behaviors were assessed based on self-reported habitual avoidance of sun exposure, use of sunscreen, hats/umbrellas

BACKGROUND: Two previously published clinical studies by our group assessed erythema and pigmentation responses in outdoor conditions with three reference sunscreens, comparing their effectiveness under the full spectrum of natural sunlight. These studies followed an almost identical protocol but were conducted in two different locations and in two ethnic groups: broadly, Chinese (Singapore) and White European (Mauritius). We analysed the data from these two study populations to compare differences in skin response according to ethnicity.
METHODS: The analysis included 128 subjects (53 were C

BACKGROUND: Following a growing mistrust in a certain number of ingredients used by the cosmetic industry, it has become popular in recent years for consumers to make their own products at home. This trend now touches on all areas of the industry, but is especially found in the hygiene sector, with shampoos and toothpaste, and the care sector, with moisturizers and sunscreen, products.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to analyze sunscreen recipes found on the Internet and to assess their level of photoprotective efficacy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen Internet recipes were chosen,

Social media, specifically Pinterest with more than 175 million users, has changed the way people seek and share health information. Recent consumer interest in natural products has led to an increase of shared recipes for homemade products including sunscreen. Homemade sunscreen products are risky because they are not regulated or tested for efficacy like commercial sunscreens. With rising skin cancer rates, the use of effective broadband sunscreen is critical to reduce incidence of skin cancer. This study used directed content analysis to examine how homemade sunscreens were portrayed on Pin

BACKGROUND: The manner in which consumers apply sunscreens is often inadequate for ultraviolet protection according to the labeled sun protection factor (SPF). Although sunscreen SPFs are labeled by testing at an application density of 2 mg/cm(2), the actual protection received is often substantially less because of consumer application densities ranging from 0.5 to 1 mg/cm(2). High-SPF sunscreens may provide more adequate protection even when applied by consumers at inadequate amounts.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to measure the actual SPF values of various sunscreens (labeled SPF 30-100) applied in

OBJECTIVES: Skin cancer represents a major health issue for Australia. Childhood sun exposure is an important risk factor and evidence suggests the use of sun protection measures by Australian school children could be improved. This study examines how the SunSmart Program, a school-based skin cancer prevention resource, can be supported to further increase sun protection behaviours to assist in lowering skin cancer incidence.
METHODS: The Health Promoting Schools (HPS) framework was adopted to select key stakeholders from a convenience sample of five school communities. Students, teaching sta

A total of 805 sunbathing Caucasians were interviewed about sunprotection behaviour and self-assessed burning tendency. Sixty-seven percent of the interviewed sunbathers used one or more sunscreen factors. Sunscreen-users and nonusers were exposed to the sun 206 min and 197 min (P = 0.186), respectively. The sunscreen users were exposed to a marginally higher UV dose than non-sunscreen users, 4.8 SED versus 4.5 SED (P = 0.0348). The rate of sunscreen users was significantly higher among subjects who stated that they always were sunburnt in the spring when not using a sunscreen than subjects wh

The anatomic distribution of some skin cancers suggests that sun exposure may be an etiologic factor for skin cancer among African Americans. Yet little is known about sun protection behaviors among African Americans. We analyzed data from the 1992 National Health Interview Survey (N = 1,583) to determine the prevalence of sun protection behaviors and sun sensitivity. About 6% of African Americans reported being extremely sensitive to the sun and severe sunburning, and 9% reported mild burns. Overall, 53% of respondents (47% of men and 57% of women) reported that they were very likely to wear
