Risk of Superinfection in Peri-implantitis After Systemic Broad Spectrum Antibiotics.

Peri-implant disease has developed over the last few years as a complication that is often difficult to resolve. The disease process is mainly attributed to bacterial infection. Proposed combined therapies use broad-spectrum antibiotics to halt its progression. A major associated risk is the undetected development of superinfections that are difficult to eradicate. A group of healthy individuals with advanced peri-implantitis (PI) were referred for evaluation due to severe, rapidly progressive bone loss. Previous nonsurgical and empiric antibiotic therapy had been rendered. Culture and polymer

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli superinfection enhances the severity of mouse bladder infection.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) afflict over 9 million women in America every year, often necessitating long-term prophylactic antibiotics. One risk factor for UTI is frequent sexual intercourse, which dramatically increases the risk of UTI. The mechanism behind this increased risk is unknown; however, bacteriuria increases immediately after sexual intercourse episodes, suggesting that physical manipulation introduces periurethral flora into the urinary tract. In this paper, we investigated whether superinfection (repeat introduction of bacteria) resulted in increased risk of severe UTI, manif

Rubella virus-induced superinfection exclusion studied in cells with persisting replicons.

For the first time, homologous superinfection exclusion was documented for rubella virus (RUB) by using Vero cells harbouring persisting RUB replicons. Infection with wild-type RUB was reduced by tenfold, whereas Sindbis virus infection was unaffected. Replication following infection with packaged replicons and transfection with replicon transcripts was also restricted in these cells, indicating that restriction occurred after penetration and entry. Translation of such 'supertransfecting' replicon transcripts was not impaired, but no accumulation of supertransfecting replicon RNA could be dete

In vivo down regulation of HIV replication after hepatitis C superinfection.

There are increasing molecular and clinical evidences that the effects of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection can be modified by coinfection with other viruses. The objective was to investigate the viral interaction between HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) after HCV superinfection. A 16 year-old pregnant woman was evaluated because of icteric acute hepatitis. Admission laboratory tests showed the following results: ALT 877 IU/L; AST 1822 IU/L; bilirubin 6.79 mg/dl. Diagnosis of acute HCV was based on detection of serum HCV RNA by PCR and anti-HCV seroconversion. ELISA for anti HIV test

Superinfection exclusion strategy of siphophage T5: analysis of the FhuA:Llp complex.

Superinfection exclusion is a widespread viral mechanism that protects the infected cell from overinfection by other identical or closely related viruses. Shortly after infection by bacteriophage T5, the bacterium Escherichia coli produces Llp, encoded by the newly injected viral genome. Llp is a small lipoprotein targeted to the inner leaflet of the host outer membrane. It binds to FhuA, an outer-membrane iron-ferrichrome transporter, which is the T5 receptor at the E. coli cell surface. The interaction between Llp and FhuA prevents any further bacteriophage binding and infection. Here, we de

Mycobacteriophage Mcgavigan Uses Noncanonical Bxb1-Like Repressor for Heterotypic Superinfection Immunity.

Mycobacteriophage Mcgavigan could be a promising candidate for use as a preventative agent against infections with Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis. Bioinformatic analysis of the Mcgavigan genome revealed the presence of an operon containing a "Bxb1-like" repressor. The operon may have been acquired by the phage through horizontal gene transfer with a Bxb1-like mycobacteriophage in its evolutionary past. We sought to investigate the function of the acquired repressor as a potential regulator of lysogeny or as a source of heterotypic superinfection immunity. Recombineering with CRISP

Pathophysiology of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Superinfection in COVID-19 Patients.

The global spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), has infected humans in all age groups, deteriorated host immune responses, and caused millions of deaths. The reasons for individuals succumbing to COVID-19 were not only the SARS-CoV-2 infection but also associated bacterial infections. Antibiotics were largely used to prevent bacterial infections during COVID-19 illness, and many bacteria became resistant to conventional antibiotics. Although COVID-19 was considered the main culprit behind the millions of deat

Critical transitions in malaria transmission models are consistently generated by superinfection.

The history of modelling vector-borne infections essentially begins with the papers by Ross on malaria. His models assume that the dynamics of malaria can most simply be characterized by two equations that describe the prevalence of malaria in the human and mosquito hosts. This structure has formed the central core of models for malaria and most other vector-borne diseases for the past century, with additions acknowledging important aetiological details. We partially add to this tradition by describing a malaria model that provides for vital dynamics in the vector and the possibility of super-

Hepatitis E Virus Superinfection and Clinical Progression in Hepatitis B Patients.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection may cause acute hepatitis and lead to hepatic failure in developing and developed countries. We studied HEV seroprevalences in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection to understand the consequences of HEV superinfection in a Vietnamese population. This cross-sectional study was conducted from 2012 to 2013 and included 1318 Vietnamese patients with HBV-related liver diseases and 340 healthy controls. The case group included patients with acute (n = 26) and chronic hepatitis B (n = 744), liver cirrhosis (n = 160), hepatocellular carcinoma (n = 166) and p

Superinfection exclusion in BHK-21 cells persistently infected with Junín virus.

We characterized a persistently Junín virus (JUNV)-infected BHK-21 cell line obtained by experimental infection with the XJCl3 strain. This cell line, named K3, produced low levels of virus in supernatants which were not influenced by the presence of defective interfering (DI) particles after the first year of infection. K3 cells were able to exclude superinfection of the homologous JUNV and the antigenically related Tacaribe virus (TCRV), whereas the non-related arenaviruses lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) and Pichinde virus (PICV) could replicate normally. Although superinfecting v

[Delta virus superinfection in a patient with chronic viral hepatitis B].

Hepatitis-Delta virus is a defective RNA virus enclosing the Delta antigen and genome within a coat of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Prevalence of Delta virus is limited to individuals with hepatitis B infection. Two modes of infection have been identified: coinfection with hepatitis virus B of healthy individuals and superinfection of HBsAg carriers. In a prospective study of 485 liver biopsies from HBsAg seropositive patients, 320 non-replicative HBsAg carriers (without evidence of core antigen) were discovered. In only one of these cases could a Delta virus superinfection be confirme

The host transcriptional response to superinfection by influenza A virus and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

UNLABELLED: Secondary bacterial challenges during influenza virus infection "superinfection") cause excessive mortality and hospitalization. Here, we present a longitudinal study of bulk gene expression changes in murine lungs during superinfection, with an initial influenza A virus infection and a subsequent Streptococcus pneumoniae infection. In addition to the well-characterized impairment of the host response, we identified superinfection-specific alterations in the global transcriptional program that are linked to the host's ability to resist the pathogens. Particularly, whereas superinfe

Superinfection and recombination of infectious laryngotracheitis virus vaccines in the natural host.

Infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV, Gallid alphaherpesvirus 1) causes severe respiratory disease in chickens and has a major impact on the poultry industry worldwide. Live attenuated vaccines are widely available and are administered early in the life of commercial birds, often followed by one or more rounds of revaccination, generating conditions that can favour recombination between vaccines. Better understanding of the factors that contribute to the generation of recombinant ILTVs will inform the safer use of live attenuated herpesvirus vaccines. This study aimed to examine the parame
