Pulmonary fibrosis associated with amyopathic dermatomyositis is known to have a generally aggressive course and is ultimately fatal. We report the case of a 50-year-old patient with amyopathic dermatomyositis, who developed progressive interstitial pneumonia that was unresponsive to corticosteroids and multiple immunosuppressive agents, including cyclosporine and tacrolimus hydrate. PURPOSE: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are suspected to play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), caused by mutated complex I subunit genes. It seems surprising that optic neuropathy has not been described in animals with a knockout of genes encoding critical anti-ROS defenses. A total of 21 pulps were collected from 12 inflamed and 9 normal cases. SOD activity and MDA content were identified in the normal and inflamed pulpal tissues. Interactions of hydrogen sulfide (HS(-)/H2S), a reducing signaling species, with superoxide dimutases (SOD) are poorly understood. We applied low-T EPR spectroscopy to examine the effects of HS(-)/H2S and superoxide radical anion O2.- on metallocenters of FeSOD, MnSOD, and CuZnSOD.
