Nonlinear association between stress hyperglycemia ratio and mortality in AHRF: validation through consensus clustering and supervised machine learning models.

PURPOSE: Acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF), a life-threatening condition in critically ill patients, is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Although the stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR) may reflect acute metabolic stress, its prognostic role in AHRF remains unclear. This study investigated the association between SHR and mortality risk in patients with AHRF. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 2514 patients with AHRF from the MIMIC-IV database. Restricted cubic spline analysis was used to assess the potential non-linear association between SHR and 28-day all-cause mortality. Kap

Predicting Treatment Outcomes in Patients with Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Coinfection, Using Supervised Machine Learning Algorithm.

Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) and HIV coinfection present a conundrum to public health globally and the achievement of the global END TB strategy in 2035. A descriptive, retrospective review of medical records of patients, who were diagnosed with DR-TB and received treatment, was conducted. Student's t-test was performed to assess differences between two means and ANOVA between groups. The Chi-square test with or without trend or Fischer's exact test was used to test the degree of association of categorical variables. Logistic regression was used to determine predictors of DR-TB treatmen

Diagnosed and subjectively perceived long-term effects of COVID-19 infection on olfactory function assessed by supervised machine learning.

Loss of olfactory function is a typical acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) symptom, at least in early variants of SARS-CoV2. The time that has elapsed since the emergence of COVID-19 now allows for assessing the long-term prognosis of its olfactory impact. Participants (n = 722) of whom n = 464 reported having had COVID-19 dating back with a mode of 174 days were approached in a museum as a relatively unbiased environment. Olfactory function was diagnosed by assessing odor threshold and odor identification performance. Subjects also rated their actual olfactory function on an 11-point n

Predicting Prolonged Length of Hospital Stay and Identifying Risk Factors Following Total Ankle Arthroplasty: A Supervised Machine Learning Methodology.

Ankle osteoarthritis (OA) is a debilitating condition that arises as a result of trauma or injury to the ankle and often progresses to chronic pain and loss of function that may require surgical intervention. Total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) has emerged as a means of operative treatment for end-stage ankle OA. Increased hospital length of stay (LOS) is a common adverse postoperative outcome that increases both the complications and cost of care associated with arthroplasty procedures. The purpose of this study was to employ four machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict LOS in patients undergo

Using supervised machine learning on neuropsychological data to distinguish OCD patients with and without sensory phenomena from healthy controls.

OBJECTIVES: While theoretical models link obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with executive function deficits, empirical findings from the neuropsychological literature remain mixed. These inconsistencies are likely exacerbated by the challenge of high-dimensional data (i.e., many variables per subject), which is common across neuropsychological paradigms and necessitates analytical advances. More unique to OCD is the heterogeneity of symptom presentations, each of which may relate to distinct neuropsychological features. While researchers have traditionally attempted to account for this hete

Using mid-infrared spectroscopy and supervised machine-learning to identify vertebrate blood meals in the malaria vector, Anopheles arabiensis.

BACKGROUND: The propensity of different Anopheles mosquitoes to bite humans instead of other vertebrates influences their capacity to transmit pathogens to humans. Unfortunately, determining proportions of mosquitoes that have fed on humans, i.e. Human Blood Index (HBI), currently requires expensive and time-consuming laboratory procedures involving enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) or polymerase chain reactions (PCR). Here, mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy and supervised machine learning are used to accurately distinguish between vertebrate blood meals in guts of malaria mosquitoes, w

Application of unsupervised and supervised machine learning approaches to blood-based biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease in a memory clinic cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Blood-based biomarkers (BBMs) are promising tools to facilitate biological diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Establishing reliable cutoffs for BBMs represents a major issue for real-world implementation and the investigation of combined BBM approaches is limited. Our aim is to test different machine learning (ML) models for BBMs interpretation with respect to established gold-standard in vivo biomarkers, i.e., cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers, to enhance their standalone and combined diagnostic value for AD. METHODS: We selected 434 patients who referred to Perugia Univ

Computed tomographic age estimation from the iliac crest and ischial tuberosity in an Indian population using supervised machine learning approaches.

Within the pelvis the iliac crest and ischial tuberosity display delayed ossification and fusion, thus, presenting as reliable maturity indicators. Amongst the different iliac crest and ischial tuberosity age estimation methods, the modified Kreitner-Kellinghaus stages constitute one of the more promising methods. The present study was directed towards establishing the applicability of the modified Kreitner-Kellinghaus method using five supervised machine learning approaches. Clinical CT scans of consenting individuals were collected and scored using the modified Kreitner-Kellinghaus method fo

Logistic Regression Analysis of LC-MS/MS Data of Monomers Eluted from Aged Dental Composites: A Supervised Machine-Learning Approach.

Compound identification by database searching that matches experimental with library mass spectra is commonly used in mass spectrometric (MS) data analysis. Vendor software often outputs scores that represent the quality of each spectral match for the identified compounds. However, software-generated identification results can differ drastically depending on the initial search parameters. Machine learning is applied here to provide a statistical evaluation of software-generated compound identification results from experimental tandem MS data. This task was accomplished using the logistic regre

Exploring the role of pain-related fear and lifting biomechanics in predicting low back pain incidence using supervised machine learning.

Greater lifting-specific pain-related fear has been associated with reduced lumbar spine motion during lifting, suggesting fear-driven protective movement strategies with potential negative consequences. However, the role of task-specific pain-related fear and lifting kinematics in the development of low back pain (LBP) remains unclear. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a supervised machine learning model to predict one-year LBP incidence and to identify the most important predictors. Baseline data from 156 healthy participants included pain-related fear, demographic, health, and lifest

Supervised machine learning approaches for early detection of metabolic and udder health disorders in dairy cows using sensor-derived data.

This study assessed five supervised machine learning (ML) models. Automated devices that continuously captured milk composition and behavioral data were used to monitor 206 Holstein cows from two commercial dairy farms. Milk yield, fat, protein, lactose, fat-to-protein ratio (FPR), somatic cell count (SCC), rumination time (RT), and body temperature were among the parameters that were noted. Cows were categorized as clinically healthy (n = 45), subclinical ketosis (n = 91), subclinical mastitis (n = 28), or clinical mastitis (n = 42) based on clinical examination, blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB)

Development and validation of prediction models for gestational diabetes treatment modality using supervised machine learning: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes (GDM) is prevalent and benefits from timely and effective treatment, given the short window to impact glycemic control. Clinicians face major barriers to choosing effectively among treatment modalities [medical nutrition therapy (MNT) with or without pharmacologic treatment (antidiabetic oral agents and/or insulin)]. We investigated whether clinical data at varied stages of pregnancy can predict GDM treatment modality. METHODS: Among a population-based cohort of 30,474 pregnancies with GDM delivered at Kaiser Permanente Northern California in 2007-2017, we sel

Identification of novel compounds against three targets of SARS CoV-2 coronavirus by combined virtual screening and supervised machine learning.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a major threat worldwide due to its fast spreading. As yet, there are no established drugs available. Speeding up drug discovery is urgently required. We applied a workflow of combined in silico methods (virtual drug screening, molecular docking and supervised machine learning algorithms) to identify novel drug candidates against COVID-19. We constructed chemical libraries consisting of FDA-approved drugs for drug repositioning and of natural compound datasets from literature mining and the ZINC database to select compounds interacting with SARS-CoV-2 tar
