Anterior cervical osteotomy of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis lesions with computer-assisted navigation surgery: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) involves spine ligament ossification. Computer-assisted navigation (CAN) effectively aids complex surgeries, such as anterior cervical osteotomy, to alleviate progressive DISH-related dysphagia. ABSTRACT: We describe a 68-year-old man with sudden onset dysphagia to both solids and liquids. Radiographic Imaging revealed DISH lesions from C2 down to the thoracic spine. The patient was successfully treated with CAN anterior osteotomy and resection of DISH lesions from C3-C6 and had complete symptom relief within 2 weeks post-o

Posterior Cruciate Ligament Resection and Varus Correction in Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Study Using Computer-Assisted Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Alignment correction is crucial for sustaining longevity and function in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Although the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is a secondary stabilizer in the coronal plane, there have been few reports on the effects of PCL resection on varus correction. The study aim was to assess the effect of PCL resection performed using computer-assisted surgery (CAS) on varus correction in TKA. METHODS: From April 2019 through January 2021, patients with varus deformity of <20° and grossly intact PCLs were included. We used CAS to measure varus correction and gap cha

A comparison of cost-effectiveness of computer-assisted 2-and 3-dimensional planning techniques in orthognathic surgery.

The aim of this randomised controlled trial was to compare the costs and benefits of computer-based 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional predictions in orthognathic surgery. Subjects aged 18-30 years with severe class III malocclusion had their treatment planned with both 2- and 3-dimensional techniques. They were randomised in a 1:1 ratio for one or other planning technique. Costs (financial, time, and dose of radiation) were compared with benefits (accuracy and health-related quality of life (HRQoL)). In total, 57 subjects (27 women and 30 men, mean (range) age 21 (18-28) years) completed the stu

Application of a computer-assisted flexible endoscope system for transoral surgery of the hypopharynx and upper esophagus.

Zenker's diverticulum is a common pathology in the transition zone of the posterior hypopharynx and esophagus. Surgical treatment is routinely performed by ENT and general surgeons. Besides the traditional open transcervical diverticulectomy, the introduction of transoral rigid treatment led to a paradigm change and is now the preferred treatment option for patients who are fit for general anesthesia. The implementation of interventional flexible endoscopy has opened another new micro-invasive approach for patients with high morbidity. Here, we present the potential utilization of a flexible,

Use of computer-assisted design and manufacturing to localize dural venous sinuses during reconstructive surgery for craniosynostosis.

OBJECTIVE: Cranial vault remodeling surgery for craniosynostosis carries the potential risk of dural venous sinus injury given the extensive bony exposure. Identification of the dural venous sinuses can be challenging in patients with craniosynostosis given the lack of accurate surface-localizing landmarks. Computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) has allowed surgeons to pre-operatively plan these complex procedures in an effort to increase reconstructive efficiency. An added benefit of this technology is the ability to intraoperatively map the dural venous sinuses based on pre-operat

Assessing whether preoperative templates and planning can replace intraoperative computer-assisted surgery measurements in total knee arthroplasty.

It is incumbent on the orthopedic community to assess current technologies available to predict the size of implants used for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and whether they can accurately represent what will be visualized by surgeons intraoperatively. This study highlights the traditional practice of TKA by applying digitization software to streamline existing knowledge preoperatively in an effort to more accurately dimension the implants. The primary goal of the study was to assess the predictive value of a digitized templating system for TKA. The secondary goal was to ascertain whether varus

Application of computer-assisted design in craniofacial reconstructive surgery using a commercial image guidance system. Technical note.

The technology of digital image guidance systems has transformed many aspects of neurosurgery, including intracranial tumor surgery, functional neurosurgery, and spinal surgery. Despite the central role of imaging studies in diagnosis and treatment planning, intraoperative image guidance has so far had very limited application to the surgical correction of craniofacial deformities, particularly those associated with craniosynostosis. The authors report an example of the marriage of computer-assisted design methods to a commercially available neurosurgical image-guidance system in the treatment
