A case-control analysis of survival outcomes in sinonasal carcinosarcoma.

PURPOSE: Carcinosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor of mixed epithelial and mesenchymal origin. In the head and neck, carcinosarcoma most commonly affects the salivary glands. Primary sinonasal carcinosarcoma (SN-CS) is exceedingly rare. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 15 cases of SN-CS obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database from 1973 to 2010. Case-matched cohorts of non-sinonasal carcinosarcoma (NS-CS), salivary gland carcinosarcoma (SG-CS) and carcinosarcoma at all other head and neck sites (NonSNSG-CS) were used for comparison. RESULTS

Analysis of an improved survival rate for congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a condition associated with significant mortality. This study examines the survival rate of neonates with CDH treated by a multidisciplinary team in a single pediatric hospital. Actual survival rate is compared with predicted outcome based on severity of illness. METHODS: A consecutive series of neonates with CDH was evaluated beginning January 1, 2000. There were no excluded patients. A treatment protocol emphasizing minimal barotrauma and control of pulmonary hypertension was used. Predicted survival rate was estimated using birth

[Survival prognosis in pemphigoid. A cohort analysis of 78 patients].

INTRODUCTION: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is the most frequent autoimmune bullous skin disease and usually affects elderly patients. Despite some conflicting data, vital prognosis is poor in BP, of which mortality rate after one year of treatment varies between 10 and 40 p. 100. To date, the factors influencing this prognosis remain to be determined. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cohort of 78 consecutive patients with BP (mean age: 80 +- 4 years) has been prospectively selected on a six-year period (1987-1992) in Limoges. The diagnosis of BP was made on clinical criteria (using a standardized questionn

Hospital readmission after surviving sepsis: An analysis of infection recurrence, risk factors and long-term survival.

Hospital readmission after sepsis poses a substantial burden on the healthcare system. The aim of this study was to characterize hospital readmissions after sepsis in terms of risk factors, underlying causes, readmission timing and long-term outcome after readmission. We included patients from the Acutelines data- and biobank who were hospitalized with sepsis. The primary outcome was acute all-cause hospital readmission, with infection-related hospital readmission as secondary outcome. Among 851 patients with sepsis, 219 (26%) were readmitted within 90 days. 67% was readmitted due to an infect

Progression-free survival as a surrogate for overall survival in gastro-esophageal cancer trials with immunotherapy: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs)-based regimens are the first-line standard of care for most patients with advanced gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma (GEA) and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The efficacy of these treatments often depend on PD-L1 expression levels. Overall survival (OS) has traditionally been the primary endpoint for evaluating treatment efficacy. Through a meta-analysis, we investigated whether progression-free survival (PFS) is a valid surrogate for OS in the ICIs-era, overall and across different PD-L1 subgroups. METHODS: A systematic literature rev

Trends in Survival and Factors Associated with Survival in Primary Thyroid Lymphoma: A SEER-Based Analysis (1975-2021).

Background: Primary thyroid lymphoma (PTL) is a rare malignancy, comprising less than 5% of all thyroid cancers and about 2.5% of lymphomas. Historically, treatment with surgery and radiation yielded poor outcomes. The advent of combined chemotherapy and radiation has improved survival, but long-term trends and prognostic factors remain underexplored. This study aimed to characterize the clinical and demographic features of PTL, evaluate changes in survival over time, and identify factors independently associated with survival. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using Surveill

Conditional survival after curative resection for extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: a comprehensive analysis of overall, recurrence-free, and relative survival.

BACKGROUND: Conditional survival offers dynamic, time-adjusted prognostic information but remains understudied in extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (EHCC). This study evaluated conditional overall survival (COS), conditional recurrence-free survival (CRFS), and conditional relative survival (CRS) after curative-intent resection for EHCC. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 1266 patients who underwent curative-intent resection for EHCC (hilar, n = 424; common bile duct cancer [CBDC], n = 842) at a single institution between 2005 and 2019. Association Between Progression-Free Survival and Overall Survival in Mantle Cell Lymphoma: A Trial-level Surrogate Endpoint Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Survival outcomes of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) have substantially improved. In the setting of extended overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS) is typically used as a primary endpoint in MCL clinical trials rather than OS to limit trial duration and cost. However, no prior analysis has assessed whether PFS can reliably predict OS. The aim of this study is to perform a systematic evaluation of PFS as a surrogate endpoint for OS in phase III MCL clinical trials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to identify phase III MCL trials.

Overall survival and progression-free survival in pediatric meningiomas: a systematic review and individual patient-level meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric meningiomas (PMs) are rare central nervous system tumors, accounting for 1-5% of all meningiomas, and differ from adult meningiomas in clinical, histopathological, and molecular features. Current guidelines primarily focus on adults, leaving a gap in evidence-based management for PMs. This study presents the largest meta-analysis of longitudinal individual patient data (IPD) to date, addressing progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in pediatric patients. METHODS: Data from 20 studies (2011-2023), including 1010 pediatric meningioma cases, were analyze

Nomograms to predict 2-year overall survival and advanced schistosomiasis-specific survival after discharge: a competing risk analysis.

BACKGROUND: The prognosis of patients with advanced schistosomiasis is poor. Pre-existing prognosis studies did not differentiate the causes of the deaths. The objectives were to evaluate the 2-year overall survival (OS) and advanced schistosomiasis-specific survival (ASS) in patients with advanced schistosomiasis after discharge through competing risk analysis and to build predictive nomograms. METHODS: Data was extracted from a previously constructed database from Hubei province. Patients were enrolled from September 2014 to January 2015, with follow up to January 2017. Proximal and Distal Femoral Fracture. A Longitudinal Retrospective Survival Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporotic fractures represent a major public health problem, particularly in older adults. Distal femur fractures, although less frequent, have also been associated with substantial mortality, with rates approaching those of hip fractures. However, direct comparisons between both entities remain limited and heterogeneous, and it is unclear whether distal femur fractures carry a comparable prognostic burden. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational cohort study including surgically treated patients aged ≥65 years with proximal or distal femoral fractures between 2013

Survival Analysis in Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: American Tegumentary leishmaniasis typically presents as a single ulcerative lesion, but atypical clinical forms exist with diverse physiopathology and treatment responses. Disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis is a less common presentation that is often challenging to treat and for which evidence-based clinical decisions are scant. A better understanding of treatment response may support the development of alternative therapeutic strategies. This study reports a retrospective cohort analysis using a time-to-event outcome to compare disseminated leishmaniasis with localiz

Predicting Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Progression: an EMG-based Survival Analysis.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, ultimately leading to muscle inefficiency and death. A vast majority of people with ALS also suffer from sleep disorders. Previous studies highlighted the presence of REM Sleep Without Atonia (RSWA) in an ALS cohort, and suggested its strong correlation with the disease severity. This study investigates the ability of electromyography (EMG) parameters recorded during Rapid-eye Movement (REM) sleep to predict disease progress and outcome rapidity in ALS. Survival models trained on a cohort of 45 ALS patients undergo
