Comprehensive analysis of pharmaceutical and illicit drugs contamination in thermal swimming pools: Occurrence, distribution, and potential impact.

The contamination of aquatic environments by micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs, is a growing global issue with significant implications for environmental and public health. This study addresses a critical knowledge gap by examining pharmaceutical and drug contamination in thermal swimming pools, which are often legally discharged into water bodies without treatment. A total of 49 water samples from 19 distinct thermal pools were analysed, targeting 101 compounds, including pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, and their metabolites. High-frequency contaminants were identif

Occupational Exposure to Trichloramine and Trihalomethanes in Swedish Indoor Swimming Pools: Evaluation of Personal and Stationary Monitoring.

INTRODUCTION: Chlorination is a method commonly used to keep indoor swimming pool water free from pathogens. However, chlorination of swimming pools produces several potentially hazardous by-products as the chlorine reacts with nitrogen containing organic matter. Up till now, exposure assessments in indoor swimming pools have relied on stationary measurements at the poolside, used as a proxy for personal exposure. However, measurements at fixed locations are known to differ from personal exposure. METHODS: Eight public swimming pool facilities in four Swedish cities were included in this surv

Changes in serum pneumoproteins caused by short-term exposures to nitrogen trichloride in indoor chlorinated swimming pools.

Nitrogen trichloride (NCl(3)) is an irritant gas released in the air of indoor pools sanitized with chlorine-based disinfectants. In the present study we investigated the effects of NCl(3) on the pulmonary epithelium of pool attendees by measuring the leakage into serum of three lung-specific proteins (pneumoproteins): the alveolar surfactant-associated proteins A and B (SP-A and SP-B) and the bronchiolar 16 kDa Clara cell protein (CC16). These pneumoproteins were measured in the serum of 29 recreational swimmers (16 children and 13 adults) before and after attending a chlorinated pool with a

[Examinations on the occurrence of free-living amoebae with possible pathogenic traits in swimming pools (author's transl)].

Water of basins and filters taken from 9 indoor-pools and 5 heated outdoor-pools has been tested for free-living amoebae by means of filtration and subsequent cultivation on agar and in fluid media. In 94.6% of the samples taken from basins and in 60.7% of the samples taken from flushing back filter water, amoebae could be cultivated which all belonged to the genus of Acanthamoeba. They were tested for pathogenic symptoms by means of mouse inoculation tests, temperature tolerance tests, cross-reaction in the immunofluorescence test, and on tissue culture. 19 strains of amoebae could be re-isol

Persistence of specialized bacteria during disinfectant challenge in a new swimming pool.

Swimming pools represent a unique aquatic environment, with continuous bacterial inoculation from swimmers and high disinfectant levels to control microbial growth. Whether, how, and which groups of bacteria can survive this strong disinfectant stress and pose a potential threat to swimmer health remain poorly understood. This study leveraged the unique opportunity of a newly opened swimming pool to address these questions. Analysis of bacterial community structures in water revealed that disinfectants substantially and temporarily simplified bacterial communities, with only a few dominant spe

Photolytic removal of DBPs by medium pressure UV in swimming pool water.

Medium pressure UV is used for controlling the concentration of combined chlorine (chloramines) in many public swimming pools. Little is known about the fate of other disinfection by-products (DBPs) in UV treatment. Photolysis by medium pressure UV treatment was investigated for 12 DBPs reported to be found in swimming pool water: chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, bromoform, dichloroacetonitrile, bromochloroacetonitrile, dibromoacetronitrile, trichloroacetonitrile, trichloronitromethane, dichloropropanone, trichloropropanone, and chloral hydrate. First order photolysis co

Explosion risk from swimming pool chlorinators and review of chlorine toxicity.

Two patients were admitted to the hospital emergency room in respiratory distress after an accidental explosion involving chlorinating agents for the swimming pool. The two primary agents involved were calcium hypochlorite and trichloro-s-triazinetrione; both are commonly used chlorinating agents. These chemicals were tested in a bomb apparatus measuring temperature and gas production. Combining the two chlorinators at 2, 6, 12, or 18 g of each produced a progressive increase in gas production from 234 to 1422 mL. The temperature increased from 30 degrees C at 2 g to 63 degrees C at 18 g. The

Swimming pool immersion accidents: an analysis from the Brisbane drowning study.

An analysis of a consecutive series of 66 swimming pool immersion accidents is presented; 74% of these occurred in in-ground swimming pools. The estimated accident rate per pool is five times greater for in-ground pools compared with above-ground pools, where pools are inadequately fenced. Backyard swimming pools account for 74% of pool acidents. Motel and caravan park pools account for 9% of childhood immersion accidents, but the survival rate (17%) is very low. Fifty per cent of pool accidents occur in the family's own backyard pool, and 13.6% in a neighbour's pool; in the latter the surviva

Acute changes in serum immune markers due to swimming in a chlorinated pool.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to disinfectants and disinfection byproducts (DBPs) due to swimming in chlorinated water has been associated with allergic and respiratory health effects, including asthma. OBJECTIVES: Biological mechanisms contributing to these associations are largely unknown. We hypothesized a potential pathway involving modulation of the immune system. METHODS: We assessed levels of immune markers (CCL11, CCL22, CXCL10, CRP, EGF, GCSF, IL-8, IL-17, IL-1RA, MPO, VEGF, Periostin) in serum collected from 30 women and 29 men before and after 40min of swimming in a chlorinated pool. Gene expression changes in blood RNA after swimming in a chlorinated pool.

Exposure to disinfection by-products (DBP) such as trihalomethanes (THM) in swimming pools has been linked to adverse health effects in humans, but their biological mechanisms are unclear. We evaluated short-term changes in blood gene expression of adult recreational swimmers after swimming in a chlorinated pool. Volunteers swam 40min in an indoor chlorinated pool. Blood samples were drawn and four THM (chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane and bromoform) were measured in exhaled breath before and after swimming. Intensity of physical activity was measured as metabolic equival

An outbreak of cryptosporidiosis in an urban swimming pool: why are such outbreaks difficult to detect?

OBJECTIVE: To describe an outbreak of Cryptosporidium gastroenteritis in a swimming pool in Melbourne in early 1998 that was not detected through routine surveillance, and discuss difficulties in identifying such outbreaks. METHODS: The Water Quality Study (WQS) was a large community-based study of gastroenteritis. Following suspicion of an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis within the study group, due to pool "X", a nested case control study was performed. Each case of Cryptosporidium gastroenteritis was matched with six controls and data from weekly Health Diaries from the WQS were reviewed. The

Increased number of cryptosporidiosis cases with travel history to Croatia might be related to swimming pools, Germany, 2023.

In August and September 2023, an unusually high number of cryptosporidiosis cases identified by routine German surveillance had travelled to Croatia (n = 23). Nine cases had stayed in the same camping resort and seven further cases had stayed at other camping sites within 15 km. Based on our standardised questionnaires, the most likely source of infection was swimming pools (93%). Further environmental investigations on site might reveal potential common sources of contamination that could be targeted by control measures.
