Existential suffering and the extent of the right to physician-assisted suicide in Switzerland: Gross v Switzerland [2013] ECHR 67810/10.

In Gross v Switzerland, the European Court of Human Rights held by 4-3 majority that Switzerland had violated the right to decide when and how to die included in the right to respect for private and family life under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights. To comply with the ruling, Switzerland must issue guidance detailing the circumstances (if any) under which physicians may lawfully prescribe lethal medication to competent individuals who have a voluntary and settled wish to die, yet whose suffering is not the product of a medical condition likely to result in death in the nea

Epidemiologic trends of cleft lip and/or palate in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic data on the number of cleft lip and/or palate (orofacial cleft (OFC)) births in Switzerland are currently sparse. However, this knowledge is essential for better understanding the etiologies underlying the various cleft phenotypes and providing expectant parents with the best possible healthcare planning and counseling. METHODS: This is the first descriptive study to report data on the prevalence of the various cleft types, their sex, and regional distributions in Switzerland. Data for the years 1998-2021 were obtained from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office. Due t

Types of Myocardial Infarction in People With HIV in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Of myocardial infarctions (MIs) recorded in 2 large human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) observational studies from North America, approximately half were classified as type 2. In the REPRIEVE clinical trial of pitavastatin versus placebo in people with HIV (PWH) (<3% of participants were from Europe), 20.6% of MIs were type 2. The proportions of type 1 MI (T1MI) and type 2 MI (T2MI) in European PWH are unknown. METHODS: The study included a retrospective record review, ascertainment of prospectively recorded and medically validated MIs, differentiation of T1MI and T2MI, and MI time

[Opioid crisis in the USA: what are implications for Switzerland?].

Warnings in Europe signal a rise in illicitly-manufactured fentanyl and other high potency synthetic opioids which could destabilize drug markets, strain health systems, and escalate harms of substance use and death. Here, we provide an overview of fentanyl in North America, drawing implications for Switzerland. Fentanyl withdrawal starts sooner, is more severe, and has worse anxiety and pain. Clinical care includes aggressive use of full agonist opioids, opioid agonist therapies (OAT) and adjunctive medications for acute withdrawal, and a need for low-threshold, readily accessible OAT to enga

Tuberous sclerosis: a survey in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic and multisystemic disorder that affects between 1/6'000 and 1/10'000 of newborns. Clinical criteria and/or genetic analysis establish the diagnosis. The mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors everolimus or sirolimus reduce the severity of several TSC-related clinical traits. We report here on the epidemiology and management of TSC patients in a large Swiss canton: the canton of Vaud. METHOD: We extracted patient files containing the diagnostic code TSC in 2015 at the Lausanne University hospital (tertiary reference cen

Predicting the burden of cancer in Switzerland up to 2025.

Predicting the short-term evolution of the number of cancers is essential for planning investments and allocating health resources. The objective of this study was to predict the numbers of cancer cases and of the 12 most frequent cancer sites, and their age-standardized incidence rates, for the years 2019-2025 in Switzerland. Projections of the number of malignant cancer cases were obtained by combining data from two sources: forecasts of national age-standardized cancer incidence rates and population projections from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office. Age-standardized cancer incidence rat

Orthodontic treatment of patients with special needs in Switzerland.

Individuals with special healthcare needs have increased orthodontic treatment need, but access to care may be insufficient. The aim of this study was to assess the uptake of patients with special needs in orthodontic settings throughout Switzerland. A web-based survey was sent to all specialist orthodontist members of the Swiss Orthodontic Society. From 220 questionnaires sent, 60% were returned (n=131). 84% of participants responded that they treat patients with special needs, but most orthodontists saw only two new patients per year with special needs. Patients most frequently treated were

Epidemiology and injury patterns of aerial sports in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Airborne sports have become more popular in recent years. The number of accidents has increased linearly as athletes take increasingly greater risks to experience the adventurous spirit of this kind of sports. AIM: To investigate the variety of injuries in airborne sport accidents, as well as which acute treatment these patients receive, both before and after admission to a level-one-trauma center. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart analysis at a major level-one-trauma center in Switzerland for 235-patients who were admitted following airborne sports injuries between 201

Seroprevalence of hepatitis E virus in dogs in Switzerland.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the causative agent of an acute and in most cases self-limiting hepatitis. Of the four major HEV genotypes that infect humans, genotype 3 and 4 are zoonotic and have been identified in humans but predominantly in pigs and wild boar, which are considered the main reservoirs. However, the known host range of zoonotic HEV may be increasing to comprise additional species, including companion animals. Several studies have identified contact with dogs as a risk factor for HEV infection in humans, yet information on the occurrence of HEV in Swiss dogs is lacking. To examine

Fusarium onychomycoses in Switzerland-A mycological and histopathological study.

Onychomycoses in temperate climates are most commonly due to dermatophytes, particularly Trichophyton rubrum. Non-dermatophyte nail infections are much less frequent, and their diagnosis requires a careful and repeated search for a potential dermatophyte that may have been overgrown in culture. A series of histological slides of suspected onychomycoses with uncommon fungal morphology prompted us to search for non-dermatophytic moulds causing dermatophytosis-like nail infections. Thirty cases were identified by culture as F solani, F oxysporum, F dimerum or F spp, and two more were only diagnos

Enterovirus detection in patients with acute gastroenteritis in Switzerland.

Acute gastroenteritis (GE) has a major impact on morbidity and mortality worldwide, yet comprehensive data regarding infectious agents including enteroviruses are scarce. We hypothesized that enteroviruses constitute a significant cause of acute GE. We analyzed 677 stool samples from 504 patients, which had been submitted for suspected infectious GE. 0.2 mL of stool suspension was extracted using the Abbott m2000sp robot and analysed by multiplex nucleic acid testing (NAT) using the Luminex xTAG gastrointestinal pathogen panel (GPP) as well as by specific NATs detecting enteroviruses and polio

Acceptance of Ambulatory Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in Central Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Currently, most patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) in Switzerland are inpatients for 2-3 days. Due to a lack of available hospital beds, we asked whether day-case surgery would be an option for patients in central Switzerland. The questions of acceptability of outpatient LC and factors contributing to the acceptability thus arose. METHODS: Hundred patients suffering from symptomatic cholecystolithiasis, capable of communicating in German, and between 18 and 65 years old, were included. Patients received a pre-operative questionnaire on medical history and social

End of Life in High-Security Prisons in Switzerland.

Similar to other institutions, the Swiss prison system faces a growing number of elderly prisoners, trends toward securitization, and, in consequence, more prisoners who will spend the end-of-life (EOL) period of time in prison. By law, prisoners should have the same access to care as the rest of the population. However, custody makes meeting the demands of medical and palliative care difficult. This article focuses on the organizational challenges related to EOL care. Based on ethnographic and documentary research, it examines the institutional logic of the prison and the competing "new" logi

Impact of HPV vaccination with Gardasil® in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Gardasil®, a quadrivalent vaccine targeting low-risk (6, 11) and high-risk (16, 18) human papillomaviruses (HPV), has been offered to 11-14 year-old schoolgirls in Switzerland since 2008. To evaluate its success and its potential impact on cervical cancer screening, HPV genotypes were examined in 18-year-old girls five years later (sub-study 1) and in outpatients participating to cervical cancer screening before and after vaccine implementation (sub-study 2). METHODS: For sub-study 1, 3726 females aged 18 in 2013 were invited to fill a questionnaire on personal demographics and HP

[Chronic infections in Latin American immigrants in Switzerland].

Recently arrived immigrants from Latin American countries represent a growing population in Switzerland. This article reviews the evidences on the most frequent chronic infections affecting this population group in Switzerland and presents screening recommendations adapted to primary care practice. Efforts should particularly focus on screening for Trypanosoma cruzi and Strongyloides stercoralis, especially in groups at higher risk of complication or transmission.
