Carotid sinus nerve C-fibers release catecholamines from the cat carotid body.

Previous studies have demonstrated that unmyelinated fibers in the cat carotid sinus nerve (CSN) are capable of inhibiting chemoreceptor activity from the carotid body. While the mechanism(s) underlying this phenomenon are unknown, it has been postulated that carotid body catecholamines may be involved in mediating this inhibitory effect. In this study, the in vitro cat carotid body-CSN preparation was used to investigate the effects of CSN stimulation on the release of [3H]catecholamines from the carotid body. The results showed that labeled catecholamines were released from this organ only w

Human epicardium-derived cells reinforce cardiac sympathetic innervation.

RATIONALE: After cardiac damage, excessive neurite outgrowth (sympathetic hyperinnervation) can occur, which is related to ventricular arrhythmias/sudden cardiac death. Post-damage reactivation of epicardium causes epicardium-derived cells (EPDCs) to acquire a mesenchymal character, contributing to cardiac regeneration. Whether EPDCs also contribute to cardiac re/hyperinnervation, is unknown. AIM: To investigate whether mesenchymal EPDCs influence cardiac sympathetic innervation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sympathetic ganglia were co-cultured with mesenchymal EPDCs and/or myocardium, and neurite o

Autonomic regulation of cystatin S gene expression in rat submandibular glands.

Innervation of rat submandibular and parotid glands by the autonomic nervous system regulates saliva volume, its rate of secretion and its composition. The autonomic nervous system also plays a regulatory role in the differentiation and growth of salivary glands, and in the expression of specific sets of genes. Rat cystatin S, a member of family 2 of the cysteine proteinase inhibitor superfamily, is expressed in submandibular and parotid glands of human and rat. In the rat, cystatin S gene expression is tissue- and cell type-specific, is temporally regulated during postnatal development, and n

Electrophysiological Investigation of the Subcellular Fine Tuning of Sympathetic Neurons by Hydrogen Sulfide.

H2S is well-known as hypotensive agent, whether it is synthetized endogenously or administered systemically. Moreover, the H2S donor NaHS has been shown to inhibit vasopressor responses triggered by stimulation of preganglionic sympathetic fibers. In contradiction with this latter result, NaHS has been reported to facilitate transmission within sympathetic ganglia. To resolve this inconsistency, H2S and NaHS were applied to primary cultures of dissociated sympathetic ganglia to reveal how this gasotransmitter might act at different subcellular compartments of such neurons. At the somatodendrit

Neural mechanism of acupuncture-modulated gastric motility.

AIM: To investigate the acupuncture-modulated gastric motility and its underlying neural mechanism. METHODS: Intragastric pressure and/or waves of gastric contraction in rats were recorded by intrapyloric balloon and changes of gastric motility induced by acupuncture stimulation were compared with the background activity before any stimulation. Gastro-vagal or splanchnic-sympathetic nerves were recorded or cut respectively for investigating the involvement of autonomic nerve pathways. Spinalization experiment was also performed. RESULTS: Acupuncture-stimulation by exciting A delta and/or C a

Targets for botulinum toxin in the lower urinary tract.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT/A), one of the seven subtypes of Botulinum toxin, is commercially available naked or complexed to other proteins. Onabotulinum toxin type A is the most extensively studied BoNT/A brand. Dose equivalence studies between the different brands have never been carried out. BoNT/A is internalized by nerve fibers after binding synaptic vesicle proteins, and the final target of action is synaptosome-associated protein 25 kDa (SNAP-25), a membrane protein essential for synaptic vesicle fusion with the neuronal membrane. METHODS: The current literature about bot

Horner's syndrome secondary to heart surgery in a pediatric patient.

Horner's Syndrome (HS) is a disease characterized by miosis, ptosis, and ipsilateral lack of sweating. It can occur with any injury at the level of the ocular sympathetic system neurons from the hypothalamus to the cervical postganglionic fibers. We present here a case of HS that developed after heart surgery in a 9-year-old boy. Ventricular septal defect, aortic and mitral valves repair, and pacemaker implant procedures were noted in his medical records. Preganglionic HS was diagnosed with bilateral unresponsiveness to a 0.1% adrenaline and positive result in the right eye to 0.5% apraclonidi

[Markedly decreased cardiac uptake with 123I-MIBG scintigraphy in a case of pure progressive autonomic failure].

A 70-year-old man with about 25 years' history of autonomic nervous system disturbances including orthostatic hypotension is presented. He had had no extrapyramidal and cerebellar signs, and was diagnosed as having pure progressive autonomic failure. His cardiac imaging with 123I labeled MIBG (metaiodobenzylguanidine) showed extremely diminished uptake, but the imaging with 201-thallium showed a normal cardiac uptake. Those results indicate non-cardiac disease-associated (neurogenic) postganglionic sympathetic fiber abnormality innervating the heart. Also, adrenomedullary imaging with 123I lab

Ultrasound-Guided Stellate Ganglion Block Combined with Pharmacological Treatment for Rosacea: A Report of Two Cases.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease primarily affecting the central facial region, significantly involving the facial blood vessels and the sebaceous gland units associated with hair follicles. The stellate ganglion block (SGB) technique can restore balance to autonomic nervous function by interrupting the impulse conduction of preganglionic and postganglionic sympathetic nerve fibers, thereby alleviating excessive peripheral blood vessel contraction, enhancing tissue blood supply, balancing hormone secretion, and modulating immune responses. SGB has demonstrated remarkable efficacy in t

Elimination of spurious absent sweat response in QSWEAT recordings.

INTRODUCTION: Forearm QSWEAT recordings are occasionally absent in females, likely due to high skin resistance. METHODS: We identified consecutive subjects with no sudomotor abnormalities but absent/markedly reduced QSWEAT forearm volume, and repeated QSWEAT at the same site after gentle abrasion. RESULTS: QSWEAT volumes were absent for 4 subjects and markedly reduced for the other 4 (median 0.01, IQR 0-0.03). After gentle skin abrasion, repeat volumes were significantly higher for all subjects and became normal in 7 of 8 subjects. DISCUSSION: Skin abrasion restores QSWEAT volumes in previo

β-eudesmol, an oxygenized sesquiterpene, affects efferent adrenal sympathetic nerve activity via transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 in rats.

The autonomic nervous system innervates various peripheral tissue functions. Various external stimuli affect autonomic nerve activity, however, there is little information about the involvement of sensory receptors in the responses. The TRPA1 is a calcium-permeable non-selective cation channel which plays a crucial role in the susceptibility to various stimuli. β-Eudesmol, an oxygenated sesquiterpene found in hop essential oil and beer, activates the TRPA1. Intragastric administration of β-eudesmol decreased efferent adrenal sympathetic nerve activity (ASNA) in rats, whereas subcutaneous admin

Peripheral sympathetic function as a predictor of complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS I) in patients with radial fracture.

Complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS I) is a frequent complication after injuries of the upper limbs. The pathophysiology of this disease remains unclear, although disturbances of the sympathetic nervous system have been detected in several clinical studies, and sympathetic blocks resolve the symptoms in many of the cases. To investigate the meaning of sympathetic dysfunction at the beginning of the disease, 27 patients with distal radial fracture were examined prospectively during the course of the disease with regard to their clinical symptoms and their peripheral sympathetic nervous

Distribution of nitric oxide synthase-containing ganglionic neuronal somata and postganglionic fibers in the rat kidney.

Nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-immunoreactive neurons were identified in the rat kidney by using an antibody against type Ia NOS and the avidin-biotin complex immunoperoxidase method in whole kidneys examined in 100 microns serial sections. The histochemical method for demonstration of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase (NADPH-d) was also used to characterize NOS-containing neurons. All somata showing NOS immunoreactivity also displayed NADPH-d activity. The greatest number of neuronal somata were observed in groups at the wall of the renal pelvis and in the angular space

Autonomic innervation in multiple system atrophy and pure autonomic failure.

BACKGROUND: Pure autonomic failure (PAF) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) are both characterised by chronic dysautonomia although presenting different disability and prognosis. Skin autonomic function evaluation by indirect tests has revealed conflicting results in these disorders. Here, the authors report the first direct analysis of skin sympathetic fibres including structure and function in PAF and MSA to ascertain different underlying autonomic lesion sites which may help differentiate between the two conditions. METHODS: The authors studied eight patients with probable MSA (mean age 60±

Renal nerves in the pathogenesis of hypertension in experimental animals and humans.

Efferent renal innervation is composed of postganglionic sympathetic fibers to the renal arterioles, juxtaglomerular apparatus, and renal tubules. Increased efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity results in increased renal vascular resistance, renin release, and sodium retention. These responses from enhanced renal sympathetic activity contribute to normal cardiovascular homeostasis but could also facilitate the development of hypertension by shifting the arterial pressure-renal sodium excretion curve to the right. Accordingly, interruption of the renal nerves should prevent the development

Physiological and pathophysiological firing properties of single postganglionic sympathetic neurons in humans.

It has long been known from microneurographic recordings in human subjects that the activity of postganglionic sympathetic axons occurs as spontaneous bursts, with muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) exhibiting strong cardiac rhythmicity via the baroreflex and skin sympathetic nerve activity showing much weaker cardiac modulation. Here we review the firing properties of single sympathetic neurons, obtained using highly selective microelectrodes. Individual vasoconstrictor neurons supplying muscle or skin, or sudomotor neurons supplying sweat glands, always discharge with a low firing prob

Pulse Photoplethysmographic Analysis Estimates the Sympathetic Activity Directed to Heart and Vessels.

BACKGROUND: Novel pulse photoplethysmographic-derived indices have been proposed as tools to measure autonomic nervous system (ANS) modulation in anesthetized and awake patients, but nowadays their experimental validation is lacking. The authors aimed to investigate the ability of pulse photoplethysmographic amplitude (PPGA), ANS state (ANSS), and ANSS index (ANSSi) to measure changes of ANS modulation in response to sympathetic stimulation. METHODS: Ten awake healthy volunteers underwent two passive head-up tilts at 45° and 90°. The heart rate variability (HRV) and systolic arterial pressure

Scientific review of the aesthetic uses of botulinum toxin type A.

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A), onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for temporary improvement of glabellar lines in patients 65 years and younger in 2002, and has also been used widely for aesthetic purposes such as hyperhidrosis, body shape contouring, and other noninvasive facial procedures. BoNT-A inhibits presynaptic exocytosis of acetylcholine (ACh)-containing vesicles into the neuromuscular junction at cholinergic nerve endings of the peripheral nervous system, thereby paralyzing skeletal muscles. ACh is the most broadly used neurotr
