The role of norepinephrine (NE) in the immunopathology of experimental tuberculosis (TB) was studied by measuring pulmonary NE and determining its cellular sources and targets. Functional studies were performed administrating adrenergic and anti-adrenergic drugs at different TB phases. Results showed high production of NE during early infection by adrenergic nerve terminals and lymphocytes located in the lungs and mediastinal lymph nodes, these cells highly expressed β2 adreno-receptors (β2AR) which by an autocrine mechanism promote Th-1 cell differentiation favoring protection. During advance

Chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system is a key component of cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis. However, previous studies have provided evidence that also implicate inflammatory cells, including mast cells (MCs), in the development of cardiac fibrosis. The current study investigated the potential interaction of cardiac MCs with the sympathetic nervous system. Eight-week-old male spontaneously hypertensive rats were sympathectomized to establish the effect of the sympathetic nervous system on cardiac MC density, myocardial remodeling, and cytokine production in the hypertensive hea

Therapy for heart failure caused by left ventricular systolic dysfunction is based on interference with maladaptive activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Agents that block beta-adrenergic receptors, decrease angiotensin-II formation, and antagonize the effects of angiotensin II and aldosterone have been shown to improve morbidity and mortality in this syndrome. Therefore, from a theoretical point of view, it would be desirable to actually diminish the degree of overactivity of these two homeostatic systems. There are compelling

There is a two-way relation between the sympathetic nerve system and the kidney. On the one hand the sympathetic nerve system affects renal function, i.e. renal hemodynamics, renin secretion and tubular sodium transport. On the other hand the kidney is the source of activating afferent signals, presumably via stimulation of chemoreceptors and baroreceptors. This concept is supported by clinical observations in endstage and pre-endstage renal disease, where sympathetic overactivity is present. It has been shown to depend on the presence of the diseased kidney and is abolished by bilateral nephr

The present study evaluated the contribution of the sympathetic nervous system to the adverse hemodynamic action of ethanol on hypotensive responses in conscious unrestrained spontaneously hypertensive rats. Ethanol caused a dose-related attenuation of the hypotensive effect of guanabenz. An equivalent hypotensive response to sodium nitroprusside was not influenced by ethanol, which indicates a potential specific interaction between ethanol and guanabenz. Alternatively, it is possible that a preexisting high sympathetic nervous system activity, which occurred during nitroprusside infusion, may

Clinical studies have shown that treatment with chronic timolol after a myocardial infarction decreases the incidence of reinfarction and mortality. It also limits the size of infarction when it is given IV during the acute phase of an infarction and followed by chronic oral dosing. It has been postulated that beta blockers work not only by a direct mechanism on the heart, but by altering neural discharge to the heart and depressing the sympathetic overactivity seen in 35% of patients immediately after an infarction. Our study examined the effect of timolol on sympathetic cardiac neural discha

The sympathetic nervous system is defined anatomically as the thoraco-lumbar autonomic nervous system with only efferent neurones projecting into the lower extremities. The afferent fibres travelling in the sympathetic nerves and supplying visceral organs are named visceral afferents. They are probably involved in visceral nociception. Some afferents in the sympathetic trunk which have been regarded by some as sympathetic afferent neurones from deep structures in the extremities in fact seem to innervate structures in the retroperitoneal space such as the vertebral column e.g. Arguments for an

In severe cases of tetanus an overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system has been postulated because of the clinical symptoms including hypertension, fluctuating blood pressure, tachycardia, tachyarrhythmia and peripheral vasoconstriction. In the present study the involvement of the sympathetic nervous system in tetanus was investigated by serial determinations of plasma adrenaline (A) and noradrenaline (NA) in 2 patients who developed severe symptoms of tetanus and the characteristic cardiovascular disturbances. Sustained high circulating levels of NA and A could be observed indicating a

Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis is a relatively rare disease, of obscure aetiology, manifested by the presence of intra-alveolar laminated concretions distributed diffusely throughout the lungs. In all the recorded cases disease has been limited to the lungs and similar lesions have not been observed in other organs or tissues. The findings in a patient in whom lesions identical to those in the lungs were confirmed in the lumbar sympathetic chain and suspected to be present in the testes are recorded.

The present paper will provide an update on the role of sympathetic neural factors in the development and progression of essential hypertension by reviewing data collected in the past 10 years. This will be done by discussing the results of the published studies in which sympathetic neural function in essential hypertension and related disease has been investigated via sophisticated and highly sensitive techniques, such as microneurographic recording of sympathetic nerve traffic and regional norepinephrine spillover. First, the relevance of the pathophysiological background of the neurogenic a

In order to allow precise regulation of bodily functions, the activity of the autonomic nervous system must be precisely regulated. The traditional model concerning the regulation of norepinephrine and acetylcholine release in target tissues suggests that the activities of the efferent arms of the autonomic nervous system are more or less independent of each other. However, plenty of experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated the presence of multiple interactions between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system that are mediated through several pathways and mechanisms at bot

Seventeen tumors of the sympathetic nervous system were discovered in offspring of rats exposed in utero at a single dose of 80mg/kg of N-nitrosoethylurea at the day 16-19 of pregnancy, and then to constant light regimen. These tumors were classified as follows: benign--ganglioneuroma (six cases) and malignant--ganglioneuroblastoma (four cases) and neuroblastoma (seven cases). The most frequent location was in the sympathetic trunk in the mediastinum and in the retroperitoneal space. Morphological features of these induced tumors represent a model for similar neoplasms in humans in childrens'

Central CRH coordination of the behavioral and physiologic sequelae of stress has been well established, and so it is parsimonious to suggest that CRH might also coordinate the immunologic sequelae. The studies presented here lend support to this suggestion. CRH administration into the brain was shown to modulate aspects of both cellular and humoral immune function, and the inhibition of CRH release in the brain following stress inhibited stress-associated immunosuppression. The effects of CRH appear to be mediated by the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system, as chemical sympathe

Hypertension and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) have a number of features in common. For example, both occur with increasing frequency in the elderly, and both are a major source of health expenditure worldwide. However, the most striking feature linking hypertension and BPH is the aetiological role of the sympathetic nervous system. Sympathetic tone mediated by the alpha-receptor is vital in the control of blood pressure. By selectively inhibiting the alpha 1-adrenoceptors in the vasculature, thereby inhibiting the response to epinephrine and norepinephrine and thus reducing peripheral re

Since insulin acutely stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, a role for sympathetic overactivity has been hypothesized to underlie the association between chronic hyperinsulinemia and hypertension. To assess the effect of sustained hyperinsulinemia on sympathetic function, [3H]norepinephrine (NE) turnover was measured in rats injected with insulin for 14d. NE turnover in insulin-treated animals given free access to lab chow and a 10% sucrose solution was compared with that obtained in rats fed chow alone or chow plus sucrose. Sucrose ingestion increased NE turnover in heart, brown adipose

A study on the effect of injury to the cervical spine, especially the so-called whiplash injury of the neck, has revealed that many patients who have sustained cervical trauma complain of, or later develop, vertigo similar to that encountered in Ménière's syndrome. Some authors offer clinical evidence to show that vertigo results from cervical nerve root irritation which is due to hypertrophic arthritis of the cervical spine and which responds to cervical traction. The etiology of this symptom-complex, however, remains unknown and, presenting a controversial problem, while some authors point o

Of the various hypertensive disorders in which mineralocorticoid hormones are involved mainly those are reviewed in which, apart from aldosterone, hyporeactivity of the adrenergic nervous system may play a permissive role. The simultaneous occurrence and extent of participation of these two factors in essential hypertension are being appreciated increasingly. Their share in the mosaic of hypertension may add to the accumulating knowledge of this disease entity. In exploring the underlying mechanisms of hypertension common regulatory pathways involving aldosterone and the adrenergic nervous sys
