Symptoms severity was assessed in 533 patients with urinary bladder overactivity (mean age 56.4 +/- 0.6 years). All the patients kept urination diary for 3 days, some patients filled in KHQ questionnaire to find out quality of life, were examined urodynamically. Overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms were studied in 52 patients before and after 12 weeks of solifenacin treatment in a dose 5 mg/day. The statistical analysis identified three degrees of OAB symptoms. The severity was calculated according to the formula in points (S): S = 2 x number of urinations for 3 days + number of urges for 3 days

Background: Patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) experience a high disease-related symptom burden. A specific instrument to evaluate quality of life (QoL), i.e., the MPN Symptom Assessment Form Total Symptom Score (MPN-SAF TSS; MPN-10), was developed. We conducted the translation, cultural adaptation, and validation into Romanian of the MPN-10. Methods: We translated the MPN-10 and tested its psychometric properties. Results: We recruited 180 MPN patients: 66 polycythemia vera (36.67%), 61 essential thrombocythemia (33.89%), 51 primary and secondary myelofibrosis (SMF) (28.33%), a

BACKGROUND: The current pandemic of COVID-19, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has resulted in significant morbidity and mortality primarily associated with respiratory failure. However, it has also been reported that COVID-19 can evolve into a nervous system infection. The direct and indirect mechanisms of damage associated with SARS-CoV-2 neuropathogenesis could affect our sensory functionality, including hearing and balance.
SUMMARY: In order to investigate a possible association between SARS-CoV-2 viral infection and possible damage to the vestibular

A national survey of 896 parents of children with asthma was performed and responses to 2 types of inquiry were compared: global assessment versus specific assessment of symptoms. Almost all parents, 860 (96%), described their child's asthma as under "good control'' when asked a global assessment question. However, 306 (34%)-when asked specific questions-actually described poor asthma control with frequent symptoms. Medicaid insurance (OR: 1.59; 95% CI: 1.03, 2.44) and parental smoking (OR: 1.60; 95% CI: 1.06, 2.43) increased the likelihood that parents' responses would be at risk for misinter

Interviewing the elderly patient, typified by poor memory, often confused and sometimes hard of hearing, requires great patience and perseverance on the part of the physician to extract pertinent information from a complicated history involving past and present illnesses, multiple medications (both prescribed and over-the-counter), and social as well as economic issues. These circumstances may include retirement, death of a spouse and a change of living conditions. Assessment of these issues, followed by a careful physical examination, must lead to a diagnostic programme that is thorough yet p

Noncognitive behavioral symptoms occurring during the prior week were studied in 34 Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and 21 spousal control subjects via caregiver and patient interviews using the Behavioral Pathology in Alzheimer's Disease Rating Scale and the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia. Delusional or paranoid features were reported in 13 subjects (38%) and hallucinations in six (18%); patients with these psychoticlike symptoms had lower scores on the Folstein's Mini-Mental State Examination. Other behavioral symptoms reported in AD patients included anxiety (50%) and activity d

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to compare the accuracy of two commonly used questionnaires in diagnosing acute cystitis, i.e., the urinary tract infection symptom assessment (UTISA) and the acute cystitis symptom score (ACSS) questionnaires.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From April 2021 to December 2022, we enrolled female patients with suspected symptoms of acute cystitis as the patient group. As a control group, we included asymptomatic females who came to the hospital for health check-ups. We calculated the accuracy of the two questionnaires in diagnosing acute cystitis and compared the di

INTRODUCTION: Somatic symptom disorder (SSD) is a distressing mental disorder characterised by the presence of at least one persistent somatic symptom and a significant psychological burden due to the symptom(s), as well as excessive thoughts, feelings or behaviours related to them or associated health concerns. The primary aim of our study is to deepen the understanding of risk factors and mechanisms for somatic symptom persistence. Specifically, we will investigate the role of patients' expectations and somatic comorbidity regarding symptom persistence.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In a prospectiv

BACKGROUND: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a common cardiovascular autonomic disorder characterized by excessive heart rate (HR) increase on standing and symptoms of orthostatic intolerance, posing significant limitations on functional capacity. No objective tool exists to classify symptom burden in POTS.
METHODS: We conducted a case-control study in 62 POTS patients and 50 healthy controls to compare symptom burden between groups using the newly developed, self-rating, 12-item, Malmö POTS Score (MAPS; 0-10 per item, total range 0-120) based on patients own perception of

Esophageal symptoms often co-occur. A validated self-report measure encompassing multiple esophageal symptoms is necessary to determine their frequency and severity both independently and in association with each other. Such a questionnaire could streamline the diagnostic process and guide patient management. We aimed to develop an integrative measure that provides a clinical 'snapshot' of common esophageal symptoms. Internal reliability and content validity of a 38-item self-report Esophageal Symptoms Questionnaire (ESQ), measuring the frequency and severity of typical esophageal symptoms usi

Minor Symptoms Evaluation Profile (MSE-profile) is an instrument for the assessment of subjective CNS-related symptoms and has recently been documented. This self-applied questionnaire includes 24 items and uses a visual analogue scale to record perceived symptoms. Based on a subjective grouping followed by a principal component analysis of the results of 374 individuals to confirm the grouping, 15 out of the 24 items were formed into three dimensions: Contentment (7 items), Vitality (5 items) and Sleep (3 items). The Cronbach's alpha coefficient used to evaluate the internal consistency of th

Community pharmacists increasingly serve as the first point of contact in primary healthcare as self-medication and over-the-counter (OTC) drug use expand, yet structured methods for symptom assessment and referral remain underdeveloped in Japan. This case series describes three patients in whom pharmacists used the LQQTSFA framework (Location, Quality, Quantity, Timing, Setting, Factors, Associated symptoms) to organize symptoms within current regulations and advise on seeking medical care. The cases involved chronic headache, laxative-induced diarrhea, and anxiety-related frequent consultati

Indirect structural disconnection-symptom mapping allows white matter impairment to be determined without the need for multi-directional diffusion (MDDW) imaging for each individual. Although widely used this method has not been validated. We analyzed a multicenter dataset obtained from 166 individuals in the chronic stage after stroke with upper limb impairment quantified with Fugl-Meyer upper extremity score (FMUE) comprising stroke lesion maps and MDDW imaging. White matter integrity was quantified (1) by diffusion-tensor-imaging-based fractional anisotropy in preselected tracts (fractional

OBJECTIVE: Describe the factor structure of the 22-symptom Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT), using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) for a priori hypothesized symptom domains.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational study.
SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: Collegiate student-athletes with concussion.
INDEPENDENT VARIABLES: Symptoms were collected via the SCAT symptom checklist.
OUTCOME MEASURES: We created symptom domains based on previous literature, guided by clinical expertise. To determine which symptom grouping best represent the data, we used CFA and compared a single-domain model to 3-
