New Simple Technique for Syndactyly Release.

UNLABELLED: Can good functional and cosmetic result be achieved in syndactyly separation using a straight midline incision with a hexagonal dorsal skin flap? METHODS: We performed 39 web reconstructions at a median of 20 months of age (11-43 months) to 26 consecutive children (21 male) with 30 simple, 4 complex, and 5 complicated syndactylies. Eighteen of the simple syndactylies were incomplete, ending at the proximal interphalangeal joint in 15 and at the distal interphalangeal joint in 3. Inguinal skin grafts were used in 2 children with either complex or complicated syndactyly. Operation t

Patient-Reported Outcomes after Syndactyly Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: There is scant literature regarding patient-reported outcomes after reconstruction for congenital hand syndactyly. Understanding patient perceptions of the postoperative outcome may facilitate a more evidence-based discussion of expectations after reconstruction. METHODS: All patients undergoing congenital syndactyly reconstruction at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago between January of 2007 and December of 2015 were identified. Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System questionnaires were completed by patients; parent-proxy questionnaires were

Complex syndactyly: aesthetic and objective outcomes.

PURPOSE: Outcome data after the treatment of complex syndactyly are lacking. The purpose of this investigation was to critically analyze and report our results after surgical reconstruction of complex syndactyly. METHODS: We included 13 patients and 21 hands (25 webspaces) in this retrospective call-back investigation. There were 17 middle/ring finger and 8 ring/little finger complex syndactylies, each with a defined, isolated osseous bridge between the distal phalanges. We excluded complicated and syndrome-associated syndactylies. Patients returned for clinical examination and subjective ass

Failure of differentiation part I: Syndactyly.

Syndactyly is one of the two most common congenital hand anomalies, the other being polydactyly. Traditionally, syndactyly is considered simple when only skin is involved; complex when there is bone connection; complete when the web involvement includes the nail folds; incomplete or partial when the nail folds are not involved, but when the web depth is distal to its normal position; and complicated when there are multiple tissue abnormalities. This article discusses the various types of syndactyly, the current state of known genetic mechanisms, and the author's preferred surgical techniques f

Thanatophoric dysplasia type I with syndactyly.

We report on a case of thanatophoric dysplasia type 1 (TD1) due to a Tyr373Cys mutation in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) gene with soft tissue syndactyly of the fingers and toes. Syndactyly has not been previously described in TD or other conditions with FGFR3 mutations, but occurs in several craniosynostosis syndromes due to mutations in FGFR2. We conclude that mutations in FGFR3 may also be associated with developmental abnormalities due to interference with programmed cell death.

Sclerocornea, hypertelorism, syndactyly, and ambiguous genitalia.

We present a child with an MCA pattern of sclerocornea, hypertelorism, pterygium colli, upper limb syndactyly, ambiguous genitalia, abnormal ears and nose, umbilical hernia, congenital heart disease, and normal chromosomes (46,XX). Although the defects observed in this case follow the diagnostic criteria for Fraser syndrome proposed by Thomas et al. [1986: Am J Med Genet 25:85-98], we think that this is a different entity.

Cleft hand, syndactyly and hypoplastic thumb.

The clinical features of 58 patients with typical cleft hand were examined and compared with 86 patients with syndactyly between the long and ring fingers, 27 patients with syndactyly between the ring, little and other fingers, 53 patients with hypoplastic thumb and 100 patients with symbrachydactyly. The clinical findings of the typical cleft hand resembled those of syndactyly. There were two unusual cases of typical cleft hand associated with hypoplastic thumb, congenital heart anomalies and absence of the axial triradius. One of these also had cleft lip and palate. Mesoaxial complete syndactyly and synostosis with hypoplastic thumbs: an unusual combination or homozygous expression of syndactyly type I?

Syndactyly type I is an autosomal dominant condition with complete or partial webbing between the third and fourth fingers or the second and third toes or both. We report here a previously undescribed phenotype of severe mesoaxial syndactyly and synostosis in patients born to affected parents. The characteristic features of these severe cases are (1) complete syndactyly and synostosis of the third and fourth fingers; (2) severe bone reduction in the proximal phalanges of the same fingers; (3) hypoplasia of the thumbs and halluces; (4) aplasia/hypoplasia of the middle phalanges of the second an

[SYNDACTYLY OF THE FINGERS: DIAGNOSIS, EVALUATION AND TREATMENT].

Syndactyly release is a surgical procedure aimed at restoring hand and finger function while maintaining the natural appearance of the interdigital web space (commissure) as much as possible. The timing of surgery depends on the complexity of the fusion, the patient's age, and their overall medical condition. The traditional technique is based on a zigzag incision and the use of skin grafts combined with local flaps. However, it is associated with a relatively high incidence of complications, such as web creep, hypertrophic scars, flap necrosis, and contractures. This article provides a genera

Syndactyly in the Pediatric Population: A Review of the Literature.

Syndactyly is one of the most common congenital upper extremity deformities. Syndactyly can be described as either simple, involving just the skin and soft tissue, or complex, involving the phalanges. Additionally, syndactyly can be categorized as complete, involving the entire digit (including the nail fold), or incomplete, which does not involve the nail fold. Multiple familial or spontaneous genetic abnormalities can cause syndactyly, and these mutations typically involve the canonical wingless-type (WNT) pathway. Surgical repair of syndactyly is typically done between six to 18 months of a

Syndactyly Release in the Hand: Surgical Technique.

Syndactyly is one of the most common congenital differences treated by hand surgeons. Although dozens of techniques for syndactyly release have been described, a reliable method is based on a dorsal rectangular flap for commissure construction and a combination of interdigitating zigzag flaps and skin grafts for digital coverage. In this article, the authors present a detailed description of syndactyly release emphasizing principles integral to successful outcomes.

Nail Psoriasis Triggered by the Reconstruction of Syndactyly.

Koebner phenomenon is observed in a number of inflammatory skin diseases. Psoriasis is one of the most common skin diseases associated with Koebner phenomenon. Nail psoriasis may be developed independently from inflammatory arthritis and skin psoriasis. This study reports on the reconstruction of third web of a 30-year-old woman, which performed on her right, due to congenital syndactyly. Four months postoperatively, she developed nail dystrophy, onycholysis and onychorrhexis of the middle, ring and little fingernails. Foot Syndactyly: A Clinical and Demographic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Syndactyly of the foot is the second most common congenital foot anomaly. In East Asia, however, no large case study has been reported regarding the clinical features of isolated foot syndactyly. In this study, we report a review of 118 patients during the last 25 years. METHODS: We conducted a chart review of patients who underwent surgical correction for foot syndactyly between January 1990 and December 2014. Operations were performed with a dorsal triangular flap and a full-thickness skin graft. The demographics of included patients and their clinical features were evaluated. S

Bilateral tibial agenesis and syndactyly in a cat.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A three-year-old cat was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, University of Naples, Italy. The cat had severe pelvic limb deformity, and abnormal development of all four paws. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Radiographs revealed bilateral tibial agenesis, syndactyly, and digital hypoplasia. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: No treatment was instituted because of the severity of the injury, the adaptation of the cat to the abnormal condition, and the owner's refusal to permit any treatment. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Congenital limb deformities are rarely reported in the cat and tibial agenesis

A rare case of simple syndactyly in a puppy.

A case of non-syndromic, complete syndactyly involving all four limbs is described in a three-month-old male crossbreed dog for the first time. Syndactyly is a rare condition in most animal species, in dogs it has been infrequently reported. Findings of clinical, radiographic and cytogenetic analyses are described and demonstrate probably for the first time that numerical and structural chromosome aberrations are not involved in the pathogenesis of this case of syndactyly.
