Nano-Enabled Advances in Tea Tree Essential Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia): Composition, Bioactivity, and Emerging Roles in Food Protection.

Tea tree essential oil (TTO), extracted from Melaleuca alternifolia, is a terpene-rich botanical antimicrobial with demonstrated broad-spectrum activity against foodborne pathogens and spoilage microorganisms. Its bioactivity is principally attributed to oxygenated monoterpenes, most notably including terpinen-4-ol, γ-terpinene, and α-terpinene, whose structure-activity relationships govern interactions with microbial membranes and intracellular targets. This review provides a comprehensive, mechanistically grounded analysis of TTO as a sustainable antimicrobial platform for food preservation

Tea tree oil attenuates diquat-induced hepatotoxicity in chickens via suppression of the NF-κB-mediated inflammatory pathway.

Exposure to diquat (DIQ) is associated with multi-organ toxicity in humans and animals. This study evaluated the protective role of tea tree oil (TTO) against DIQ-induced hepatotoxicity in chickens and explored its mechanistic basis. 240 one-day-old Hy-Line W-36 chickens were randomly allocated into four groups with 6 replicates per group and 10 birds per replicate. The chickens received either a basal diet or a TTO-supplemented diet (200 ppm) administered via drinking water. On day 20, half of the chickens in each dietary group were administered diquat (DIQ) via intraperitoneal injection (20

Protective Effects of Tea Tree Oil on Inflammatory Injury of Porcine Intestinal Epithelial Cells Induced by Lipopolysaccharide In Vitro.

Tea tree oil (TTO) improves the intestinal mucosal immunity of weaning piglets, but its underlying mechanism is not clear. We hypothesized that TTO may alleviate inflammatory injury by regulating the function of intestinal epithelial cells. Ileum epithelial cells (IPI-2I) were chosen and an inflammatory injury cell model was generated. The cell viability, cytokine secretion, and gene expression of TLR4 and NF-κB were measured to further evaluate the effects of TTO on the inflammatory injury in immune-stressed cells. The results showed that lipopolysaccharide (LPS; content: ≥30 μg/mL; time: 3 h

Intracellular Replication Inhibitory Effects of Tea Tree Oil on Vesicular Stomatitis Virus and Anti-inflammatory Activities in Vero Cells.

Viral disease management has been proven difficult, and there are no broadly licensed vaccines or therapeutics. Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) is an active pathogen of wild ungulates and livestock; its infection frequently caused irreversible vesicles on the tongue or other positions, leading to enormous economic loss. Tea tree oil (TTO) has been shown to be a popular remedy for many skin diseases owing to its antibacterial, antipruritic, and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the potential effect of TTO on VSV proliferation and the corresponding inflammatory response in cells remain unclea

Activity of tea tree oil and nerolidol alone or in combination against Pediculus capitis (head lice) and its eggs.

Head lice infestation is an emerging social problem in undeveloped and developed countries. Because of louse resistance increasing, several long-used insecticidal compounds have lost their efficacy, and alternatives, such as essential oils, have been proposed to treat this parasitic infestation. The present study investigated the efficacy of two natural substances: tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) oil and nerolidol (3,7,11-trimethyl-1,6,10-dodecatrien-3-ol) against lice and its eggs. Products were used alone and in combination (ratio 1:1 and 1:2) from 8 % dilution. The in vitro effect of natu
