Decreasing Telephone Calls for Tympanostomy Tube Otorrhea: A Pilot Study.

The "Clinical Practice Guideline: Tympanostomy Tubes in Children" published in 2013 by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation encourages that an "educational video, or other teaching aid, should be developed to illustrate how parents/caregivers" may manage postoperative complications such as tube otorrhea; however, the current literature is devoid of such patient safety and quality improvement measures. Our objective was to develop an effective educational model to assist parents and caregivers in understanding the signs and symptoms of tympanostomy tube (TT) o

Factors Associated with Patient-Initiated Telephone Calls After Spine Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Telephone calls play a significant role in the follow-up care of postoperative patients. However, further data are needed to identify the determinants of patient-initiated telephone calls after surgery because these factors may also highlight potential areas of improvement in patient satisfaction and during the hospital discharge process. Therefore, the goal of this study is to determine the number of postoperative patient telephone calls within 14 days after surgery and establish the factors associated with patient-initiated calls and reasons for calling. METHODS: A retrospective

Asymmetric Z-plasty for telephone deformity in prominent ear correction.

There have been plenty of surgical techniques for the correction of prominent ears. "Telephone deformity" or "reverse telephone ear" has been described as the undesired result of the inappropriate correction of the prominent ear, mainly the deficient correction of the lobule. We have performed an asymmetric Z-plasty to the lobule to overcome this deformity not only by excision of the excess skin but also by transposition of the soft tissue. Between 2005 and 2011, the technique currently described was performed in 19 patients. Preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative standardized photogr

Risk factor awareness: a randomized telephone survey of public knowledge.

Health educators are often faced with the dilemma of developing materials or programs that begin at a level appropriate to the needs of individuals or the population as a whole. In 1992, a randomized telephone survey of the public's knowledge of risk factors relating to stroke was conducted in Saskatoon. The risk factors most frequently identified were poor diet (40%), hypertension (36%) and stress (36%). Respondents with a family history of stroke were significantly more likely to identify hypertension as a risk factor than those without such a history and significantly less likely to identif

Telephone cognitive screening with older Aboriginal Australians: A preliminary study.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive screening via telehealth is increasingly employed, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Telephone adaptations of existing cognitive screening tests must be validated across diverse populations. The present study sought to evaluate an existing 26-point telephone adaptation of the Mini-Mental State Examination (tMMSE) in a sample of older Aboriginal Australians. Additionally, we aimed to evaluate a telephone adaptation of the urban version of the Kimberley Indigenous Cognitive Assessment short-form (tKICA screen). METHODS: A sub-sample (n = 20) of participants (aged

Validation of telephone-based behavioral assessments in aging services clients.

BACKGROUND: The Behavioral Health Laboratory (BHL), a telephone-based mental health assessment, is a cost-effective approach that can improve mental illness identification and management. The individual BHL instruments, which were originally designed to be administered in-person, have not yet been validated with an in-person BHL assessment. This study therefore aims to characterize the concordance between the BHL data gathered by telephone and in-person interviews. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with English-speaking aging services network (ASN) clients aged 60 years and older

A randomized telephone intervention trial to reduce primary medication nonadherence.

BACKGROUND: Primary medication nonadherence (PMN), defined as patients not picking up an initial prescription, can limit the effectiveness of therapy for chronic conditions. Effective interventions to reduce PMN have not been widely studied or implemented. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ability of an additional nurse-directed telephone intervention to reduce PMN in a cohort of patients with persistent nonadherence after repeated pharmacy-based outreach. METHODS: Patients in the Geisinger Health System receiving new (i.e., initially prescribed) prescriptions sent to CVS pharmacies for medications

Participants' views of telephone interviews within a grounded theory study.

AIM: To offer a unique contribution to the evolving debate around the use of the telephone during semistructured interview by drawing on interviewees' reflections on telephone interview during a grounded theory study. BACKGROUND: The accepted norm for qualitative interviews is to conduct them face-to-face. It is typical to consider collecting qualitative data via telephone only when face-to-face interview is not possible. During a grounded theory study, exploring users' experiences with overnight mask ventilation for sleep apnoea, the authors selected the telephone to conduct interviews. This

Stuttering inhibition via altered auditory feedback during scripted telephone conversations.

BACKGROUND: Overt stuttering is inhibited by approximately 80% when people who stutter read aloud as they hear an altered form of their speech feedback to them. However, levels of stuttering inhibition vary from 60% to 100% depending on speaking situation and signal presentation. For example, binaural presentations of delayed auditory feedback (DAF) and frequency-altered feedback (FAF) have been shown to reduce stuttering by approximately 57% during scripted telephone conversations. AIMS: To examine stuttering frequency under monaural auditory feedback with one combination of DAF with FAF (CO

Antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Staphylococcus species isolated from telephone receivers.

INTRODUCTION: Microorganisms are transferred to everyday objects from the environment and infected individuals. Pathogenic microbes are transmissible from the air, skin, hands and other interpersonal contacts and cause diseases most of the time. This study centres on the microbial assessment of telephone receivers, their ability to transfer bacterial infections and the isolation of these microorganisms from receivers, with an emphasis on Staphylococcus aureus and its antibiotic susceptibility pattern. METHODS: 1,591 isolates were obtained from roadside telephone booths in 16 different locatio

Parents' reported reasons for avoiding MMR vaccination. A telephone survey.

OBJECTIVE: During the second half of the 1990s and the first years of the 2000s a declining coverage for MMR vaccination in two-year-olds was observed in Sweden. The aim was to assess reasons for postponement or non-vaccination. DESIGN: A telephone survey using a structured questionnaire on parents' attitudes regarding their choice to postpone or abstain from vaccinating their child. SETTING: The County of Ostergötland in Sweden. SUBJECTS: A total of 203 parents of children who had no registered date for MMR vaccination at a Child Health Centre. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Parental reasons for

Cellular telephone use and risk of intratemporal facial nerve tumor.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Microwave radiation exposure from cellular telephone use has been implicated in the development of intracranial tumors. The intratemporal facial nerve (IFN) is exposed to higher levels of cellular telephone radiation than intracranial tissues. The purpose of the study was to determine whether cellular telephone use is associated with an increased risk of IFN tumors. STUDY DESIGN: Case-control using a structured telephone survey at an academic, tertiary-care referral center. METHODS: Patients with IFN tumors (n = 18) were case-matched with patients treated for acoustic

Supportive telephone intervention for patients receiving chemotherapy. A pilot study.

Psychosocial interventions have been shown to improve quality of life (QOL) for many cancer patients. A pilot study was conducted to assess the feasibility of a psychoeducational intervention for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Eight patients receiving chemotherapy for colorectal carcinoma participated. The intervention is based on a modification of Interpersonal Therapy. It consisted of four sessions, administered biweekly, using a manual format, by a psychiatric nurse clinician over the telephone. The participants also completed a set of QOL measures by telephone to assess tolerance

Occupational cancer mortality among women employed in the telephone industry.

We conducted a mortality odds ratio (MOR) analysis among women employed in the telephone industry, using death certificates from 24 reporting states for 1984 through 1989. Usual occupation and industry from the death certificates were coded using the 1980 Bureau of the Census occupational and industrial classification system. There were 2444 cancer deaths among women in the telephone industry (code 441). Among younger (age < 49) white women, significant excess risks were observed from cancers of the rectum (MOR = 3.3; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.2 to 8.7), connective tissue (MOR = 4.4; 95

Client Experiences of a Telephone-Delivered Intervention for Methamphetamine Use Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the significant harms associated with methamphetamine use both in Australia and globally, treatment uptake remains low. Telephone-delivered interventions have potential to overcome many barriers to help-seeking; however, their utility for treatment of methamphetamine use disorder is not well understood. This study explored the experiences and perceived impacts of a standalone, telephone-delivered cognitive and behavioural intervention, Ready2Change, for individuals with methamphetamine use disorder. METHODS: In-depth semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted an
