Streptococcus pneumoniae: a Plethora of Temperate Bacteriophages With a Role in Host Genome Rearrangement.

Bacteriophages (phages) are viruses that infect bacteria. They are the most abundant biological entity on Earth (current estimates suggest there to be perhaps 1031 particles) and are found nearly everywhere. Temperate phages can integrate into the chromosome of their host, and prophages have been found in abundance in sequenced bacterial genomes. Prophages may modulate the virulence of their host in different ways, e.g., by the secretion of phage-encoded toxins or by mediating bacterial infectivity. Some 70% of Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus)-a frequent cause of otitis media, pneum

Convalescent plasma treatment for COVID-19: Tempering expectations with the influenza experience.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the zoonotic coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 has swept the world in 5 months. A proportion of cases develop severe respiratory tract infections progressing to acute respiratory distress syndrome and a diverse set of complications involving different organ systems. Faced with a lack of coronavirus-specific antiviral drugs and vaccines, hundreds of clinical trials have been undertaken to evaluate repurposed drugs. Convalescent plasma from recovered patients is an attractive option because antibodies can have direct or indirect antiviral activity and immunotherapy works we

Climate warming increases spring phenological differences among temperate trees.

Climate warming has substantially advanced spring leaf flushing, but winter chilling and photoperiod co-determine the leaf flushing process in ways that vary among species. As a result, the interspecific differences in spring phenology (IDSP) are expected to change with climate warming, which may, in turn, induce negative or positive ecological consequences. However, the temporal change of IDSP at large spatiotemporal scales remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed long-term in-situ observations (1951-2016) of six, coexisting temperate tree species from 305 sites across Central Europe and f

Mercury bioaccumulation in temperate forest food webs associated with headwater streams.

The soils and food webs associated with mid to high elevation, forested, headwater streams in northeastern North America are potential hotspots for mercury (Hg) methylation and bioaccumulation, but are not well studied. Our goals were to quantify total Hg (THg) and methyl Hg (MeHg) concentrations in soils and terrestrial food webs associated with headwater streams of northern hardwood forests to identify predictors of small-scale spatial variation in Hg bioaccumulation. We sampled soil characteristics that promote Hg methylation including pH, sulfur and calcium content, and organic matter. To

Distribution and Driving Factors of Forest Swamp Conversions in a Cold Temperate Region.

Forest swamps are widely distributed in cold temperate regions, with important landscape and ecological functions. They are prone to conversion caused by complex factors. Forest swamp conversions involve forest swamping, meadow swamping, water body swamping, and conversion to farmland. An understanding of the landscape characteristics and primary environmental factors driving forest swamp conversions is imperative for exploring the mechanism of forest swamp conversions. We investigated the landscape characteristics of forest swamp conversions and quantified the relative importance of environme

Toxicology of Gambierdiscus spp. (Dinophyceae) from Tropical and Temperate Australian Waters.

Ciguatera Fish Poisoning (CFP) is a human illness caused by the consumption of marine fish contaminated with ciguatoxins (CTX) and possibly maitotoxins (MTX), produced by species from the benthic dinoflagellate genus Gambierdiscus. Here, we describe the identity and toxicology of Gambierdiscus spp. isolated from the tropical and temperate waters of eastern Australia. Based on newly cultured strains, we found that four Gambierdiscus species were present at the tropical location, including G. carpenteri, G. lapillus and two others which were not genetically identical to other currently described

Comparison of density and output of sweat gland in tropical Africans and temperate Koreans.

Modification of sweating could be due to changes in activated sweat gland density (ASGD) and/or activated sweat gland output (ASGO). The present study determined regional and inter-ethnic differences in ASGD and ASGO during passive heating between tropical natives (African, n=22) and temperate natives (Republic of Korean, n=25). Heat load was carried out by immersing the half body into a hot water bath for 30min. Tympanic temperature (Tty) and skin temperature (Ts) were measured. Mean body temperature (mTb) was calculated. Sudomotor activities including sweat onset time, sweat rate, ASGD, and

Frost hardening and dehardening potential in temperate trees from winter to budburst.

We investigated how deciduous trees can adjust their freezing resistance in response to temperature during the progress of the ecodormancy phase, from midwinter to budburst. We regularly sampled twigs of four different temperate deciduous tree species from January to the leaf-out date. Using computer-controlled freezers and climate chambers, the freezing resistance of buds was measured directly after sampling and also after the application of artificial hardening and dehardening treatments, simulating cold and warm spells. The thermal time to budburst in forcing conditions (c. 20°C) was also q

Exercise performance over the menstrual cycle in temperate and hot, humid conditions.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effects of the menstrual cycle on prolonged exercise performance both in temperate (20°C, 45% relative humidity) and hot, humid (32°C, 60% relative humidity) conditions. METHODS: For each environmental condition, 12 recreationally active females were tested during the early follicular (day 3-6) and midluteal (day 19-25) phases, verified by measurement of estradiol and progesterone. For all four tests, thermoregulatory, cardiorespiratory, and perceptual responses were measured during 60 min of exercise at 60% of maximal oxygen consumption followed by an inc

Growth, voluntary food intake and digestion in farmed temperate and tropical deer.

Growth and voluntary feed intake (VFI) in grazing temperate farmed deer species are influenced by the feeding value of the forage and the stage of the deer's seasonal cycle. Liveweight gain (LWG) of growing red deer was greater when perennial ryegrass (0.80)/white clover (0.20) pasture was grazed at 10 cm than 5 cm surface height, but venison production by one year of age was still low. Chicory and red clover were of superior feeding value for deer than perennial ryegrass-based pastures, increasing LWG of young red and hybrid (0.25 elk; 0.75 red deer) deer during summer and autumn, due to high

The development of Onchocerca ochengi in surrogate temperate Simuliidae, with a note on the infective larva.

Laboratory reared nulliparous female flies of six temperate species of Simuliidae were examined for their susceptibility to infection with Onchocerca ochengi by intrathoracic injection of cryopreserved skin microfilariae obtained from cattle in Mali. Three species (S. equinum, S. ornatum and S. erythrocephalum) supported development to the infective stage, one species (S. variegatum) allowed partial development and the remaining two species (S. reptans and S. aureum) were insusceptible to infection. The most suitable surrogate vectors were S. equinum and S. ornatum which had survival rates of

A comparison of the clinical and cardiological features of endomyocardial disease in temperate and tropical regions.

This study was designed to compare the clinical and cardiological features of endomyocardial disease in temperate and tropical regions. Eleven patients were studied in the U.K., 47 in India and 8 in Brazil. The patients in the U.K. were older, with a male predominance, and they had a systemic illness: the hypereosinophilic syndrome. Half of these patients presented in the early necrotic stage of the disease, and all had biventricular involvement. On the other hand, patients in the tropical countries were younger, with an equal sex incidence, and were from poor, malnourished communities with he

Differences between surgical colorectal conditions seen in the temperate and tropical regions.

Geographic location of a population plays a significant role in the interpretation of symptoms of some diseases of the colon. Because diverticular disease of the colon is very rare in the tropics, frank rectal bleeding, which may be suggestive of bleeding diverticulosis when it occurs in a temperate region, is suggestive of a bleeding ileal typhoid ulcer eroding terminal branches of the superior mesenteric artery. Similarly, symptoms suggestive of ulcerative colitis in a temperate region are suggestive of amebic colitis in the tropics. Anatomic variation also plays a part in the nature of some

Ecophysiological responses of boreal-temperate Atlantic kelp at their equatorial range limit.

Portuguese kelp forests are the southernmost stronghold of boreal-temperate species in the Eastern North Atlantic, forming a key biogeographic boundary under rapid ocean warming. Within these forests, species such as Laminaria hyperborea and Saccharina latissima occupy distinct depth ranges, yet the physiological mechanisms underlying this zonation remain unclear. We compared their responses to temperature and light to test whether adult ecophysiology contributes to their vertical distribution and may also influence their latitudinal range limits. Both species displayed high tolerance to short

Temperate bacteriophages shape intraspecies competition during Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infection.

Temperate bacteriophages are increasingly recognized as important drivers of microbial evolution. However, their role in mediating competition among members of the same species during infection remains poorly defined. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa), an opportunistic pathogen associated with acute and chronic infections, frequently exhibits clonal dominance within infected individuals, suggesting the existence of effective mechanisms for excluding conspecific competitors. Here, we investigate the contribution of temperate bacteriophages to intraspecies competition among clinical Pa isolates. Scree

Paleogenomics and habitat modeling reveal temperate Eurasian origins of woolly rhinoceroses.

The woolly rhinoceros was a prominent Ice Age megafaunal species, and there is limited knowledge regarding its origin and responses to past glacial cycles. We sequenced 29 mitochondrial and 14 nuclear genomes from Pleistocene specimens across Eurasia and modeled the species' habitats over the past 500,000 years. Our results suggest that its maternal genetic diversity mainly evolved in temperate Eurasia around 460 thousand to 420 thousand years ago during a prolonged glacial-interglacial transition. We found that a ~170-thousand-year-old East Asian individual was ancestral to all later populati

Omnipresent Allies: The Role of Temperate Phages in Microbial Adaptation Across Ecosystems.

Understanding the extraordinary environmental adaptability of prokaryotes is crucial for manipulating microbial communities, as their adaptive mechanisms drive community dynamics, resilience and functional responses to interventions like bioremediation. Microbial adaptation to the environment is shaped not only by their intrinsic characteristics but also by interactions with other microorganisms. Among them, temperate phages, which reside alongside cellular microorganisms across diverse ecosystems, are emerging as key players in microbial adaptation. This review delves into the contribution of

Morphological responses of a temperate intertidal foraminifer, Haynesina sp., to coastal acidification.

Coastal acidification could have widespread impact on marine organisms, affecting the ability of calcifying organisms to build shells and skeletons through calcium carbonate precipitation. As an abundant group of calcifying organisms, some protists within the phylum Foraminifera demonstrate potential success under elevated partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) due to their ability to modulate intracellular pH. However, little is known about their responses under more extreme acidification conditions that are already seen in certain coastal environments. Here we exposed specimens of Haynesi

A temperate Earth-sized planet with tidal heating transiting an M6 star.

Temperate Earth-sized exoplanets around late-M dwarfs offer a rare opportunity to explore under which conditions planets can develop hospitable climate conditions. The small stellar radius amplifies the atmospheric transit signature, making even compact secondary atmospheres dominated by N2 or CO2 amenable to characterization with existing instrumentation1. Yet, despite large planet search efforts2, detection of low-temperature Earth-sized planets around late-M dwarfs has remained rare and the TRAPPIST-1 system, a resonance chain of rocky planets with seemingly identical compositions, has not
