Tensile strength testing in feline skin with different sizes of nylon suture material: a biomechanical in vitro study.

ObjectivesThis in vitro study aimed to evaluate the failure loads and failure types of sutured feline skin samples using different sizes of nylon (polyamide 6/6.6) suture material.MethodsA total of 88 skin samples from the lateral thorax and abdomen of 11 cadaveric cats were harvested using an hourglass-shaped template. In total, 80 samples from 10 cats were bisected and sutured with three simple interrupted sutures using randomly assigned nylon suture sizes (2-0, 3-0, 4-0 and 5-0 USP). Control samples remained intact. Uniaxial tensile tests were performed using a universal testing machine. Fa

A multifunctional hydrogel dressing with high tensile and adhesive strength for infected skin wound healing in joint regions.

Most hydrogel dressings are designed for skin wounds in flat areas, and few are focused on the joint skin regions which undergo frequent movement. The mismatch of mechanical properties and poor fit between a hydrogel dressing and a wound in joint skin results in hydrogel shedding, bacterial infection and delayed healing. Therefore, it is of great significance to design and prepare a multifunctional hydrogel with high tensile and tissue-adhesive strength as well as other therapeutic effects for the treatment of joint skin wounds. In this work, a multifunctional hydrogel was reasonably prepared

In vivo evaluation of the skin tensile strength by the suction method: pilot study coping with hysteresis and creep extension.

From an engineering standpoint, both the skin and subcutaneous tissue act as interconnected load-transmitting structures. They are subject to a variety of intrinsic and environmental influences. Changes in the cutaneous viscoelasticity represent an important aspect in a series of skin conditions. The aim of this work was to explore the methodology of biomechanical measurements in order to better appreciate the evolution and severity of some connective tissue diseases. The Cutometer MPA 580 (C+K electronic) was used in the steep and progressive suction procedures. Adapting measurement modalitie

Experimental and numerical simulation assessment of fracture evolution and tensile strength recovery in Grout-reinforced fractured surrounding rocks.

The surrounding rock around deep underground excavations generally contains fractures and joints that significantly reduce mechanical integrity, particularly in zones where excavation-induced unloading, stress rotation, and anisotropic deformation generate tensile stress concentrations. These tensile regimes govern crack initiation, fracture propagation, spalling, and progressive instability around tunnels, caverns, mines, and wellbores. Although rock grouting is widely used as a reinforcement strategy, its effectiveness in restoring the inherent strength of tension-dominated surrounding rock

Multi-fidelity neural network-based prediction of tensile strength of high-entropy alloy (FeNiCoCrCu) using molecular dynamics data.

CONTEXT: High-entropy alloys (HEAs) represent a class of advanced materials with superior mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. FeNiCoCrCu HEA has been of particular interest due to its excellent tensile strength, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability. However, it is a significant challenge to understand and optimize the mechanical properties of such alloys due to the complex structure. Molecular dynamics (MD) is a popular choice in investigating atomic-scale characteristics but is computationally costly for large polycrystal systems. Machine learning approaches have seen growing

Modified melamine-formaldehyde resins improve tensile strength along with antifouling and flame retardancy in impregnation of cellulose paper.

In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and benzoguanamine (BG) modified melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resins were used to prepare two high-pressure laminates (HPLs) as well as a pure cellulose paper laminate and core sandwich laminates with the core material of aramid paper (AP) or polypropylene non-woven fabric (PPNF). The tensile strength, flame retardancy and antifouling properties of the modified MF resin laminates were studied and compared with the MF resin laminate. The tensile test results showed that the MF resins modified with BG and PVA improved the tensile strength of the impregnated p

Experimental and Numerical Insights into the Semi-Circular Bend (SCB) Test for Tensile Strength Estimation in Rock-like Materials.

The uncracked semi-circular bend (SCB) test has recently gained attention as a simple and material-efficient method for determining the tensile strength of brittle geomaterials. However, as reported in the literature and confirmed by our experiments, localized damage at the roller supports remains a critical limitation that may compromise measurement accuracy and test validity. This study addresses this limitation through experimental testing on red and gray sandstone, complemented by numerical simulations to provide deeper insight into stress distribution and fracture mechanisms in the SCB te

An interaction-based mixing model for predicting porosity and tensile strength of directly compressed ternary blends of pharmaceutical powders.

Predicting the mechanical properties of powder mixtures without extensive experimentation is important for model driven design in solid dosage form manufacture. Here, a new binary interaction-based model is proposed for predicting the compressibility and compactability of directly compressed pharmaceutical powder mixtures based on the mixture composition. The model is validated using blends of MCC, lactose and paracetamol or ibuprofen. Both compressibility and compactability profiles are predicted well for a variety of blend compositions of ternary mixtures for the two formulations. The model

Tensile strength of a novel superficial suture pattern compared to traditional suture patterns in a cadaveric human skin model.

BACKGROUND: The suture material and pattern utilized to maintain the skin edges in proximity allows for successful primary wound healing. No prior studies have evaluated the tensile strength of different suture patterns on human cadaveric skin. This study evaluates the tensile strength of four single suture patterns: simple (S), horizontal-mattress (HM), vertical-mattress (VM), and a novel stich termed Lindeque locking (LL). METHODS: Four skin closure patterns were tested on human cadaveric skin using 3-0 nylon - S, HM, VM, LL - totaling four groups with twelve samples each. A tensioning devi

Metalloproteases meprin α and meprin β are C- and N-procollagen proteinases important for collagen assembly and tensile strength.

Type I fibrillar collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, crucial for the formation and strength of bones, skin, and tendon. Proteolytic enzymes are essential for initiation of the assembly of collagen fibrils by cleaving off the propeptides. We report that Mep1a(-/-) and Mep1b(-/-) mice revealed lower amounts of mature collagen I compared with WT mice and exhibited significantly reduced collagen deposition in skin, along with markedly decreased tissue tensile strength. While exploring the mechanism of this phenotype, we found that cleavage of full-length human procollagen I he

Tensile and Bending Strength of Birch and Beech Lamellas Finger Jointed with Conventional and Newly Developed Finger-Joint Profiles.

In this study, the tensile and bending strength of birch and beech lamellas finger jointed with conventional (Standard) and newly developed finger-joint profiles (New) are presented. Polyurethane (PUR), Melamine-Urea-Formaldehyde (MUF) and Phenol-Resorcinol-Formaldehyde (PRF) adhesive systems were used to bond the finger joints. The objective of the New profiles was to reduce the stress concentrations within the finger joint by cutting the cross-grooved fingers perpendicular to the main orientation of the finger-joint profile. In the first trials of the development, larger cross-grooved finger

Influence of Defect Number, Distribution Continuity and Orientation on Tensile Strengths of the CNT-Based Networks: A Molecular Dynamics Study.

Networks based on carbon nanotube (CNT) have been widely utilized to fabricate flexible electronic devices, but defects inevitably exist in these structures. In this study, we investigate the influence of the CNT-unit defects on the mechanical properties of a honeycomb CNT-based network, super carbon nanotube (SCNT), through molecular dynamics simulations. Results show that tensile strengths of the defective SCNTs are affected by the defect number, distribution continuity and orientation. Single-defect brings 0 ~ 25% reduction of the tensile strength with the dependency on defect position and

Degeneration at the insertion weakens the tensile strength of the supraspinatus tendon: a comparative mechanical and histologic study of the bone-tendon complex.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between the degree of degeneration at the supraspinatus insertion, the tensile strength, and the site of failure of this tendon. Thirty-three fresh cadaveric shoulders (average age: 62 years; range: 39-83 years) were examined. A tensile load to failure was applied at a constant crosshead speed of 25.4 mm/min to a 10 mm wide strip of the supraspinatus tendon that remained attached to the bone. Preexisting degenerative changes at the insertion were assessed and scored histologically and compared with the ultimate tensile stress.

Comparison of Tensile Strength and Fracture Toughness of Co-Bonded and Cold-Bonded Carbon Fiber Laminate-Aluminum Adhesive Joints.

The purpose of this work is to compare the co-bonding vs. cold-bonding route on the adhesive joint performance of a CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) laminate-aluminum connection. In particular, the overlap shear, tensile strength and Mode I and Mode II fracture toughness will be evaluated. The adhesives for co-bonding and cold-bonding are, respectively, a thermosetting modified epoxy, unsupported structural film and a two-component epoxy adhesive, chosen as representative of applications in the high-performance/race car field. The emerging trend is that, in tensile e Mode I fracture test

A solid-state-dependent correlation between drug-polymer hot melt extrudate mechanical behavior and milled extrudate tablet tensile strength.

The mechanical behavior of drug-polymer hot melt extrudates, whether amorphous or partially crystalline, was found to predict the tensile strength of tablets directly compressed from the milled extrudates, with the most predictive test depending on the extrudate solid state. Griseofulvin (GF), a poorly water-soluble BCS class II drug prone to crystallization, was selected as the model drug. Two polymers were compared, Hydroxypropyl Cellulose SL (HPC) and Kollidon VA 64 (PVPVA), to uncover the influence of drug-polymer interactions and identify (anti)plasticization phenomena.
