A 56-yr-old man with a prior history of renal cell carcinoma had moderately intense abnormal localization of 201Tl-chloride in a solitary brain lesion which was discovered to be a bacterial abscess. The organisms isolated by culture included Actinomycosis odontolyticus, Peptostreptococcus and Hemophilus aphrophilus. Because of the clinical presentation, MRI characteristics and thallium scintigraphic findings, the lesion had been felt to represent either a primary or a metastatic neoplasm. This case illustrates the need for caution in the interpretation of thallium brain scintigram.

No simple, noninvasive method is available for evaluating extracutaneous Kaposi sarcoma in AIDS patients or for following the tumor's response to treatment. We report our preliminary experience with thallium-201 scintigraphy in nine AIDS patients with proved Kaposi sarcoma. Thirty patients with recurrent symptoms after aortocoronary bypass graft surgery underwent angiography as well as exercise thallium 201 imaging. Thallium intoxication was reported in cases with accidental ingestion, suicide attempt, and criminal adulteration. Reported cases were mostly one-time ingestion, therefore, the clinical course of divisional ingestion has not been fully known. This investigation was conducted to determine the ability of 201Tl brain SPECT with respect to preoperative prediction of lesional aggressiveness of meningioma. Thallium 201 (201Tl) myocardial scans were obtained in 16 patients just prior to the discontinuation of a vasopressin infusion (.1 to .2 units/min) administered for the treatment of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Thallium is a highly toxic metal whose biogeochemical behaviour in the marine environment is poorly understood. A biochemical study of experimental thallium intoxication in newborn rats and its morphological consequences upon the brain of developing animals was undertaken. The thallium content was analyzed in the following encephalic regions: hippocampus, hypothalamus, mesencephalon, cerebellum, and cortex. One day after application of the toxic substance, a homogeneous distribution of the metal in the brain was found.
