Therapeutic living communities for adults who are deaf and have intellectual disabilities: A conceptual model linking social communication and mental health.

As a consequence of long-lasting experiences of communicative and social deprivation and exclusion, adults who are deaf and have intellectual disabilities must be considered a high-risk group for the development of mental health problems. A therapeutic living community model with special emphasis on social communication development that has been implemented at three different sites in Austria is described. Through the development of the therapeutic living communities and subsequent observations, an approach is suggested to understand the mediating role of signed language and social communicati

Risk of neuropsychological impairment among therapeutic community residents: relationship with dropout and spontaneous recovery during treatment.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic Communities (TCs) are long-term residential treatment settings for individuals with substance use disorders, who often present with neuropsychological impairments. These impairments may influence treatment retention, yet little is known about their evolution in TCs or their association with dropout. This study aims to: (1) identify early risk factors for dropout; (2) investigate the potential recovery from the risk of neuropsychological impairment during an 8-mont stay in a TC; and 3) identify variables at TC entry that may predict the risk of neuropsychological impairm

[Contributions of Integrative community therapy in the therapeutic approach to people with type 2 diabetes mellitus].

Based on the evidence indicating that the current healthcare model fails to comprehensively and satisfactorily address chronic health conditions, complementary approaches to traditional therapeutic methods are needed to provide a broader perspective on people with chronic health conditions. This study investigated the contributions of integrative community therapy (ICT) in treating individuals with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a specialized medical outpatient clinic. This qualitative study involved 20 users with T2DM who participated in ICT sessions and individual interviews. The analysi

The effect of therapeutic horseback riding on balance in community-dwelling older adults: a pilot study.

Equine assisted activities (hippotherapy and therapeutic riding) improve balance in patients with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, but have not been systematically studied in older adults, at risk of falls due to balance deficits. We conducted a 10-week, single blind, controlled trial of the effect of a therapeutic horseback riding course on measures of balance in community-dwelling adults 65 years and older. Nine riders and six controls completed the trial. Controls were age matched to riders and all participants were recruited from the local community. Both groups showed improvements in

Therapeutic hypothermia after cardiac arrest: experience at an academically affiliated community-based veterans affairs medical center.

At laboratory and clinical levels, therapeutic hypothermia has been shown to improve neurologic outcomes and mortality following cardiac arrest. We reviewed each cardiac arrest in our community-based Veterans Affairs Medical Center over a three-year period. The majority of cases were in-hospital arrests associated with initial pulseless electrical activity or asystole. Of a total of 100 patients suffering 118 cardiac arrests, 29 arrests involved comatose survivors, with eight patients completing therapeutic cooling. Cerebral performance category scores at discharge and six months were signific

HIV antibody testing and client retention in the therapeutic community. A preliminary report of Phoenix House.

This report describes the current approach to testing for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody at Phoenix House, a large therapeutic community (TC) in the northeastern United States, and presents findings on retention of clients who have been tested for HIV antibodies and notified of their HIV serostatus. A total of 240 clients were tested while in treatment at Phoenix House between April 1988 and July 1992. Of these, 51 tested HIV positive. An additional 76 clients had tested positive for HIV antibodies prior to entering treatment. The difference in length of treatment stay between

Learning the therapeutic targets of acute myeloid leukemia through multiscale human interactome network and community analysis.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is caused by proliferation of mutated myeloid progenitor cells. The standard chemotherapy regimen does not efficiently cause remission as there is a high relapse rate. Resistance acquired by leukemic stem cells is suggested to be one of the root causes of relapse. Therefore, there is an urgency to develop new drugs for therapy. Repurposing approved drugs for AML can provide a cost-friendly, time-efficient, and affordable alternative. The multiscale interactome network is a computational tool that can identify potential therapeutic candidates by comparing mechanisms

Length of hospitalization on a short-term therapeutic community. A multivariate study by sex across time.

Patient length of hospitalization was examined in a private short-term therapeutic community unit using a longitudinal, multimethod, -ultivariate approach, with data analyzed separately by patient sex. Patient data were entered into stepwise linear regression analyses for weeks 1, 2, and 4 of an average seven-week hospitalization for male and female patients separately. Results for men were not specifically replicated among the women. Longer-staying men were diagnosed more frequently as "personality disorders," tended to be somewhat aloof, perceived the ward as encouraging denial, facade, orde

ER proteostasis meets mitochondrial function: contact sites as hubs of communication and therapeutic targets.

Proteostasis maintains the balance between protein synthesis, folding, and degradation within the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). This quality-control system ensures that proteins undergo proper post-translational modifications-such as PDI-ERO1-mediated oxidative folding and STT3-dependent N-glycosylation-so that only correctly folded proteins proceed through the secretory pathway. Impairment of protein load, folding capacity, or degradation via the ER-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway leads to the accumulation of unfolded proteins, triggering ER stress and activating the unfolded protein resp

Interactions and communications in lung tumour microenvironment: chemo/radiotherapy resistance mechanisms and therapeutic targets.

The lung tumour microenvironment (TME) is composed of various cell types, including cancer cells, stromal and immune cells, as well as extracellular matrix (ECM). These cells and surrounding ECM create a stiff, hypoxic, acidic and immunosuppressive microenvironment that can augment the resistance of lung tumours to different forms of cell death and facilitate invasion and metastasis. This environment can induce chemo/radiotherapy resistance by inducing anti-apoptosis mediators such as phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt, signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and nuclear f

Ingestible optoelectronic capsules enable bidirectional communication with engineered microbes for controllable therapeutic interventions.

Engineered microbes can be used for biomolecular sensing and therapeutic interventions. However, they cannot be monitored and controlled while in vivo. Here we combine optogenetically engineered Escherichia coli Nissle 1917, an ingestible optoelectronic capsule and a wireless smartphone to establish a bidirectional biological-optical-electronic signal processing chain for diagnostic or therapeutic capabilities under user control. As a proof of concept, we engineered E. coli Nissle 1917 to detect inflammation-associated nitric oxide in the pig gut and generate a bioluminescent signal for diagno
