[Drug therapy in surgical biliary diseases. A microbiological and animal experiment study].

In this study type and occurrence of microorganisms in gallbladder and choledochal bile are compared to results of other authors. The value of antibiotic therapy in acute cystic duct obstruction in a clinical study and in animal experiments are discussed. Efficacy of different antibiotic substances (mezlocillin, cefazolin, cefotaxim, rolitetracyclin and aminoglycosides) are measured by means of the reduction in colony count in T-tube bile. Antibiotic effect was least when tetracyclines and aminoglycosides were given. Beta-lactam antibiotics caused marked reduction and even elimination of bacte

[The nerve root syndrome in small animals - A review focussing on pathophysiology and therapy in the dog].

A large variety of etiologies is considered to be the cause of nerve root syndrome in dogs. Lateralized disc herniation, foraminal stenosis and malignant as well as benign nerve sheath tumors are some of the most important triggers described. The clinical signs of a nerve root syndrome are characterized by monoparesis in combination with progressive lameness, which may be accompanied by an elevation of the affected limb. Although the problem is well known among clinicians, there is no review article in the veterinary literature that specifically covers the subject of "nerve root syndrome in sm

From animal studies into clinical trials: the relevance of animal models to develop vaccines and therapies to reduce disease severity and prevent hRSV infection.

INTRODUCTION: Human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV) is an important cause of lower respiratory tract infections in the pediatric and the geriatric population worldwide. There is a substantial economic burden resulting from hRSV disease during winter. Although no vaccines have been approved for human use, prophylactic therapies are available for high-risk populations. Choosing the proper animal models to evaluate different vaccine prototypes or pharmacological treatments is essential for developing efficient therapies against hRSV. AREAS COVERED: This article describes the relevance of usin

Exploring animal-assisted therapy in stroke rehabilitation: a systematic review of emerging evidence.

PURPOSE: Stroke rehabilitation often involves long-term challenges across physical, psychological, cognitive, and social domains, and existing services do not always meet these multidimensional needs. A small number of studies have examined the use of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) in this context. This systematic review aimed to synthesise the available evidence on AAT in adults undergoing stroke rehabilitation, focusing on its reported effects across key domains of recovery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Eligible studies reported origin

Lack of resistance development during brincidofovir therapy in animal models of orthopoxvirus infection.

Brincidofovir (BCV, commercially known as Tembexa®) is an antiviral drug with broad-spectrum activity against double-stranded DNA viruses, including orthopoxviruses. BCV was developed and approved for treating human smallpox in adults and children, including neonates, under the FDA Animal Rule. The efficacy data for licensure were obtained using two surrogate models of smallpox: the rabbitpox virus (RPXV) in New Zealand White rabbits and ectromelia virus (ECTV) in Balb/c mice. The potential for BCV resistance development was evaluated in RPXV- and ECTV-infected animals treated with BCV from pi

The perspectives of clinical level medical students on animal-assisted therapy: a study in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: The role of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) in complementary and alternative medicine is well acknowledged. AAT is widely patronized, in developed countries such as USA, Canada, and many European countries, but less so in developing countries in Africa including Ghana. For persons in developing African countries and elsewhere to benefit from AAT, healthcare professionals must be acquainted with it recommend it to their patients when necessary. This study therefore assessed the perspectives of clinical-level medical students on AAT. METHOD: A semi-structured questionnaire was used to

Apigenin in cancer prevention and therapy: A systematic review and meta-analysis of animal models.

BACKGROUND: Apigenin is being increasingly recognized as a cancer chemopreventive agent. We aimed to investigate the anticancer effects of Apigenin in in-vivo studies to know its present research status and how close or how far it is from the clinics. METHODS: Several electronic databases such as PubMed, Springer, Cochrane, and ctri.gov.in were searched to fetch the relevant articles. We focused only on published animal studies that reported the anticancer effects of Apigenin against various cancers. Two reviewers independently assessed the risk of bias for each analysis, and the conflicting

Modulation of Neuroinflammation by Low-Dose Radiation Therapy in an Animal Model of Alzheimer's Disease.

PURPOSE: Recently, several studies have reported that low-dose radiation therapy (RT) suppresses the release of proinflammatory cytokines in inflammatory-degenerative disorders, including Alzheimer disease (AD). AD is the most common cause of dementia, and neuroinflammation is one of the major contributing factors in AD pathogenesis. Therefore, low-dose RT may be used clinically for treating AD. However, the appropriate doses, effects, and underlying mechanisms of RT in AD have not been determined. In this study, we aimed to determine the appropriate RT dose and schedule for AD treatment and t

Impact of Antibiotic Therapies on Resistance Genes Dynamic and Composition of the Animal Gut Microbiota.

Antibiotics are major disruptors of the gastrointestinal microbiota, depleting bacterial species beneficial for the host health and favoring the emergence of potential pathogens. Furthermore, the intestine is a reactor of antibiotic resistance emergence, and the presence of antibiotics exacerbates the selection of resistant bacteria that can disseminate in the environment and propagate to further hosts. We reviewed studies analyzing the effect of antibiotics on the intestinal microbiota and antibiotic resistance conducted on animals, focusing on the main food-producing and companion animals. I

Physiological State of Therapy Dogs during Animal-Assisted Activities in an Outpatient Setting.

Therapy dogs are increasingly being incorporated into numerous clinical settings. However, there are only a handful of studies that have focused on the impact of animal-assisted activity or therapy sessions on the wellbeing of the therapy dogs. Furthermore, these studies show mixed results. The goal of this study was to provide an in-depth picture of the effects of these interactions on the dogs involved by considering multiple physiological measures known to be associated with emotional state (continuous heart rate, heart rate variability, pre- and post-session tympanic membrane temperatures,

Non-immunogenic utrophin gene therapy for the treatment of muscular dystrophy animal models.

The essential product of the Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) gene is dystrophin1, a rod-like protein2 that protects striated myocytes from contraction-induced injury3,4. Dystrophin-related protein (or utrophin) retains most of the structural and protein binding elements of dystrophin5. Importantly, normal thymic expression in DMD patients6 should protect utrophin by central immunologic tolerance. We designed a codon-optimized, synthetic transgene encoding a miniaturized utrophin (µUtro), deliverable by adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors. Here, we show that µUtro is a highly functional, non

Hybrid Alginate@TiO2 Porous Microcapsules as a Reservoir of Animal Cells for Cell Therapy.

The number of patients suffering from diseases linked with hormone deficiency (e.g., type 1 diabetes mellitus) has significantly increased in recent years. As organ transplantation presents its limits, the design of novel robust devices for cell encapsulation is of great interest. The current study reports the design of a novel hybrid alginate microcapsule reinforced by titania via a biocompatible synthesis from an aqueous stable titania precursor (TiBALDH) and a cationic polyamine (PDDAC) under mild conditions. The biocompatibility of this one-pot synthesis was confirmed by evaluation of the

Cell therapy in the treatment of bipolar mania in an animal model: a proof of concept study.

INTRODUCTION: The rationale of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as a novel therapeutic approach in certain neurodegenerative diseases is based on their ability to promote neurogenesis. Hippocampal atrophy has been related to bipolar disorder (BD) in preclinical, imaging and postmortem studies. Therefore, the development of new strategies to stimulate the neurogenesis process in BD is crucial. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the behavioral and neurochemical changes induced by transplantation of MSCs in a model of mania-like behavior induced by lisdexamfetamine dimesylate (LDX). METHODS: Wistar rats (

The importance of muscarinic receptors in domestic animal diseases and therapy: Current and future perspectives.

This review provides an overview of the early and current literature including contributions that highlight the parasympathetic cholinergic receptor systems in domestic animal tissues. Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) belong to the subfamily of G protein-coupled receptors and regulate many fundamental functions of the central and peripheral nervous systems and have been subject to research over at least 40 years. Nonetheless, there are few studies specifying mAChRs in domestic animal tissues. This review focuses on the pharmacology of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) system
