The peak distress thermometer as a potent prognostic indicator for five-year survival in patients with hypopharyngeal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Hypopharyngeal cancer (HPC) is associated with a poor prognosis, often attributed to advanced staging and physiological frailty. However, the prognostic impact of psychological distress remains under-investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of the NCCN Distress Thermometer (DT) for 5-year survival and identify early mortality predictors through longitudinal monitoring. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 80 patients with newly diagnosed HPC. Baseline and longitudinal DT scores, the NCCN Problem List, and objective physiological markers (BMI, Hemoglobin, CRP

Measuring Self-Reported Well-Being of Physicians Using the Well-Being Thermometer: Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Advancements in medical science have focused largely on patient care, often overlooking the well-being of health care professionals (HCPs). This oversight has consequences; not only are HCPs prone to mental and physical health challenges, but the quality of patient care may also endure as a result. Such concerns are also exacerbated by unprecedented crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared to other sectors, HCPs report high incidence of stress, depression, and suicide, among other challenging factors that have a significant negative impact on their well-being. OBJECTIVE: Given

Accuracy of a zero-heat-flux thermometer in cardiac surgery, a prospective, multicentre, method comparison study.

Accurate measurement of core temperature is of utmost importance during on-pump cardiac surgery, for detection of hypothermia before cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), guidance of temperature management on CPB, active rewarming on CPB and guidance of warming therapy after CPB. Most temperature measurement methods are known to become inaccurate during rapid changes in core temperature and suffer from delayed detection of temperature changes. Zero-heat-flux temperature (ZHF) measurement from the lateral forehead may be an alternative, non-invasive method quantifying the core temperature. A prospectiv

Accidental laceration of the vaginal wall by an intravaginal thermometer as a calving detection device in a Japanese black cow.

An intravaginal thermometer was inserted into a 59-month-old Japanese black cow to predict calving. After calving, the thermometer penetrated the vaginal wall and could not be removed by farm staff. Surgery to remove the thermometer was successful. The cow left the animal hospital without hospitalization. In the follow-up, the cow remained healthy on the farm for more than one year and is now pregnant. No symptoms related to damage to the vagina or infection developed. This is the first case report of a vaginal laceration caused by an intravaginal thermometer in a Japanese black cow. Insertion

Screening of physical distress in breast cancer survivors: Concurrent validity of the Distress Thermometer and Problem List.

Several studies support the validity and psychometric properties of the DT&PL for measuring psychosocial distress in breast cancer survivors (BCSs). However, next to psychosocial problems, it is equally important to identify distress caused by limitations in physical functioning. Validity of the DT&PL for the identification of physical problems in BCSs has not yet been investigated. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to investigate the concurrent validity and psychometric properties of the Dutch DT&PL in BCSs for the identification of physical problems. Ninenty BCSs completed the D

The cover of an ear thermometer probe as a split-thickness skin graft mold in external auditory canal reconstruction.

Maintaining the patency of the external auditory canal (EAC) during reconstruction is important because of its physiological role in hearing and immunological protective functions. The curved shape of the EAC presents a challenge when performing a skin graft. One of the key points for a successful skin graft is to ensure compression on the wound bed, and many novel methods, including prefabricated ear molds, have been reported for this purpose. In this study, we present a case of a skin graft performed to reconstruct a skin defect following excision of actinic keratosis in the EAC, using the c

Evaluation of the novel non-invasive zero-heat-flux Tcore™ thermometer in cardiac surgical patients.

Tcore™ Sensor is a novel zero-heat-flux thermometer that estimates core temperature from skin over forehead. We tested the hypothesis that this system estimates core temperature to an accuracy within 0.5 °C. 40 cardiac surgical patients were enrolled (960 measurements). Reference core temperatures were measured in nasopharynx, pulmonary artery and the arterial branch of the oxygenator of the cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuit. 95% Bland-Altman limits of agreement for repeated measurement data was used to study the agreement between Tcore™ thermometer and the reference methods. The proportion

The Distress Thermometer as an ultra-short screening tool: a first validation study for mixed-cancer outpatients in Singapore.

INTRODUCTION: Research has shown that single-item tools, like the Distress Thermometer (DT), are comparable to longer ones, like the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). In this study, we tested the validity of the DT in a population of Singapore cancer outpatients, and determined the cut-off scores on the DT for clinically relevant distress and an impaired quality of life (QOL). We also documented the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and QOL impairments in this population. METHODS: One hundred and five patients (Mdn age=51-60years, 64% female, and 71% Chinese) diagnosed with vario

The Electronic Faces Thermometer Scale (eFTS)-Construct Validity for Pain Assessment in Pediatric Postoperative Care in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Pain in children is undertreated. An assessment scale co-designed with children, parents, and health care professionals could lead to more effective pain assessments and treatment strategies aimed at reducing pain and pain-related symptoms. There are analogue scales validated for self-report of pain in children, but today, children regularly use digital technology, which healthcare should align with. The newly developed electronic Faces Thermometer Scale is a digital assessment scale that needs further validation before it may be recommended for self-reporting pain intensity. AIMS

Prediction model for rectal temperature in cats with different baseline characteristics using a non-contact infrared thermometer.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Body temperature is the most useful clinical parameter for evaluating animal health. In clinical practice, rectal temperature is the gold standard for assessing body temperature, but rectal temperature measurement is not convenient and can cause stress in animals. The non-contact infrared thermometer is considered an alternative method for skin temperature measurements in animals. Many biological factors may influence the response of body regions to thermal challenges; thus, the identification of these variables is essential for accurate infrared temperature measurements. T

Convenient detection of H2S based on the photothermal effect of Au@Ag nanocubes using a handheld thermometer as readout.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), as a hazardous gas, is often found around dump areas. Long term exposure can cause harm to health, it is highly necessary to develop some simple and sensitive methods for on-site H2S detection. Herein, a convenient photothermal assay has been designed for the quantitation of H2S using a handheld thermometer as readout. Au@Ag nanocubes (Au@Ag NCs), a core-shell nanocomposite with strong light absorption at ∼450 nm, was chosen as a novel photothermal agent in this study. Under the laser irradiation at 450 nm, the Au@Ag NCs show a strong photothermal effect, and a signific

Effectiveness of Combined Strategies for the Prevention of Hypothermia Measured by Noninvasive Zero-Heat Flux Thermometer During Cesarean Section.

Background: Perioperative hypothermia (body temperature <36°C) is a common complication of anesthesia increasing the risk for maternal cardiovascular events and coagulative disorders, and can also influence neonatal health. The aim of our work was to evaluate the impact of combined warming strategies on maternal core temperature, measured with the SpotOn. We hypothesized that combined modalities of active warming prevent hypothermia in pregnant women undergoing cesarean delivery with spinal anesthesia. Methods: Seventy-eight pregnant women were randomly allocated into three study groups receiv
