After 25 years of wearing a condom catheter, recurrent blisters and epidermal sloughing of the penile shaft developed in a patient. Patch testing revealed hypersensitivities to several allergenic components of the condom catheter (that is thiram and mercaptobenzothiazole). After immediate treatment with topically applied steroids, the condition improved and the patient successfully switched to a silicone condom without further irritation.

Three thousand subjects in North America were patch-tested with 19 allergens. The most frequent sensitizers observed include nickel sulfate, caine mixture, potassium dichromate, balsam of Peru, thimerosal, ethylenediamine hydrochloride, paraphenylenediamine and thiram. The prevalence data compared with an earlier study indicates that the initial allergens reported warrant their continued inclusion in a routine patch test screening series in North America.

Two unicellular and two filamentous cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) were exposed under conditions optimal for photoautotrophic growth to eleven pesticides. Low concentrations (0.01 to 5 ppm) of diuron, atrazine, and paraquat inhibited growth. With MCPA, MCPP, 2,4-D, milstem and ethrel, marked inhibitory effects were achieved only at concentrations above 100 ppm. Growth was inhibited by glyphosate, DDT, and thiram at intermediate concentrations. In some cases, the effective concentration of the pesticide varied considerably with the organism tested.

The effects of eleven pesticides on the populations of bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi and protozoa was investigated by treating a garden soil with their recommended rates. The microbial populations were estimated using the standard plate-count technique.
