According to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification, essential (primary) thrombocythemia (ET) is one of several Bcr-Abl negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). The classical term MPN covers the subcategories of MPN: ET, polycythemia vera (PV), primary myelofibrosis (PMF), and prefibrotic PMF (pPMF). ET is marked by clonal proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells, leading to a chronic overproduction of platelets. At the molecular level a JAK2 (Janus Kinase 2), calreticulin, or MPL mutation is found in the majority of patients. Typical ongoing complications of the disea

The essential thrombocythemia is one of the seven described forms of myeloproliferative neoplasms. It is characterized by megakaryocytic hyperplasia with consequent thrombocytosis maintained in the peripheral blood, favoring the occurrence of thrombo-hemorrhagic phenomena. We present the case of an 81-year-old woman with a history of ischemic stroke in the context of a sustained thrombocytosis, which led to a spinal study and a search for the V617F mutation in the JAK2 gene, which was positive. The patient started cytoreductive therapy with hydroxyurea with favorable current evolution.

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a disease which is extremely rare in children. Only recently, data on pediatric ET have become available. Areas covered: In children with sustained platelet count over 450 x 109/L, secondary thrombocytosis must be ruled out. ET workup comprehends research of JAK2V617F, CALR and MPL mutations and bone marrow biopsy (BM). In asymptomatic children wait and watch is the best option. Aspirin controls headache and other microvascular disturbances. Patients with venous thrombosis need anticoagulation. Cytoreductive drugs in children with ET should be prescribed as a

Essential thrombocythemia (ET), an uncommon blood cancer, is one of the classic myeloproliferative neoplasms, a category that also includes polycythemia vera and primary myelofibrosis. All 3 diseases are clonal hematopoietic stem cell disorders. Since 2005, when scientists discovered a molecular aberration driving clonal hematopoiesis in polycythemia vera, our understanding of the genomic underpinnings of these conditions has increased rapidly. Over the last decades, primary prevention of thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications has improved the lives of patients with ET, and the ability to ch

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by an increase in blood platelets and dominated by a predisposition to vascular events. Cutaneous manifestations can complicate its course. itching has been the most common symptom reported; however, the percentage has ranged from 3% to 46%, depending on the survey. Erythromelalgia is found in 6% of cases, and livedo reticularis, minor bleeding, acrocyanosis, and Raynaud's phenomenon are rare manifestations. It is important to recognize and treat these events, because they can affect patients' quality of life and cou

AIM: It is known that thrombocytosis is closely related to vascular complications and particularly thrombosis in essential thrombocytemia (ET) cases. The aim of this study is to investigate a possible correlation between adhesion molecules and vascular attacks as well as the relation of these molecules to the platelet count.
METHODS: The study group consisted of 30 ET patients and 30 healthy controls subjects. Serum intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), serum vascular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and serum E-selectin levels were determined by ELISA method according to manufacturer's ins

INTRODUCTION: The risk of abortion is known to be high in women with essential thrombocythemia (ET). However, a few studies have focused on the risk of stillbirth among fetuses reaching gestational age compatible with life.
METHODS: Review of medical charts of pregnant women with ET who received cares at a single center between January 2003 and June 2013 and the English literature in which more than 20 pregnancies with ET were dealt with regarding outcomes. Outcomes were classified into three categories: spontaneous abortion or preterm delivery before GW 24, stillbirth at and after GW 24, and

A 69-year-old woman with essential thrombocythemia (ET) developed giant ecchymosis, and she was admitted to hospital. Marked anemia (Hb 8.1 g/dl) accompanied by a prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (89.6 s) was observed, and she received red blood cells (RBC) and fresh frozen plasma (FFP). On day 2 after admission, consciousness disturbance suddenly occurred, whereas computed tomography of the brain showed no evidence of bleeding. As the ecchymosis progressed, she developed shock. Although RBC and FFP transfusions were administered, she developed multi-organ failure and died 48 h

Patients with essential thrombocythemia carry a high risk for thromboembolic and bleeding events but they have an almost normal life expectancy. A careful evaluation of the medical history and an exact diagnosis is mandatory to estimate each patient's risk for morbidity and to choose the most appropriate treatment measure. In patients with the need of cytoreductive therapy, the benefits of therapy have to outweigh the potential risks of drug toxicities. Hydroxyurea is the most useful cytoreductive drug for elderly patients; in younger persons, interferon alpha or anagrelide may be the drugs of

Essential thrombocythaemia (ET), the most often occurring myeloproliferative disorder is a clonal malignant disorder arising from stem cell. The course of the disease is complicated by some severe thrombotic events and far less commonly by haemorrhagic phenomena. Treatment of ET consist of antiplatelet drugs (e.g. aspirin) and lowering platelet count (hydroxyurea or interferon alpha). Anagrelide (anagrelide hydrochloride) is an imidazoquinazoline derivative which lowers platelet count probably by inhibiting thrombopoiesis and reduces platelet aggregation. The aim of the study was to evaluate t

We describe a boy with XYY male accompanied with essential thrombocythemia. This is, to our knowledge, the first complete case report of the kind in the pediatric literature. The patient was asymptomatic, but at age 5 his platelet count had increased to 145.5 x 10(4)/microL, and he was diagnosed as having essential thrombocythemia based on the diagnostic criteria of the Polycythemia Vera Study Group. At that time, it was discovered by chromosome analysis of both bone marrow and peripheral blood cells that he was XYY male. At times during the clinical course when his platelet count was 94.1 x 1

Erythrocytosis is not a feature of essential thrombocythemia (ET); this is the most important difference between ET and polycythemia vera (PV). Transformation of ET to PV has only rarely been described. We have reviewed the blood cell counts of 170 ET patients with a median follow-up of 63 months (range 11-313). Eleven of 170 patients (6.5%) developed erythrocytosis at a median of 29 months (range 12-138) after the diagnosis of ET. According to the present results, the development of erythrocytosis in patients with ET is not a rare phenomenon.

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a myeloproliferative disorder associated with megakaryocytic hyperplasia and thrombocytosis. In this disease, in vitro autonomous growth of megakaryocytic colonies has been demonstrated by various investigators. This phenomenon is impaired by the inhibition of the thrombopoietin/c-mpl pathway. In order to evaluate the potential role of mutations of the receptor gene in the origin of this autonomous growth, we compared the expression of c-mpl mRNA isoforms in platelets derived from ET patients and normal subjects. Overlapping c-mpl PCR fragments derived from fo

Case 1. The patient was a 69-year-old man with essential thrombocythemia (ET), who underwent urgent laparotomy. On admission he was dehydrated and the platelet count was more than 160 x 10(4).microliter-1, with hematocrit of 50%. Anesthesia was induced with ketamine i.v. and maintained with nitrous oxide and sevoflurane in oxygen. Postoperative care included the administration of gabexate mesilate (GM) which is an antiplatelet agent. Case 2. An 84-year-old woman with ET was diagnosed as gastric cancer and elective gastrectomy was scheduled. The platelet count was more than 100 x 10(4).microlit

We describe a patient with essential thrombocythemia (ET) who developed multiple myeloma (MM) 5 years after the initial diagnosis. A review of the literature revealed no additional reports of the association of these two diseases. Development of MM was not related to treatment of essential thrombocythemia. This association suggests an alteration at the pluripotential stem cell level.

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a rare disorder in children. An 11-year-old white boy was first seen in January 1986 with symptoms of abdominal pain. His platelet count was 1.5 million/mm3. Other hematological values and coagulation studies, including bleeding time, were normal. There was laboratory evidence of mild platelet dysfunction. Using the criteria of the Polycythemia Vera Study Group, a diagnosis of ET was made. He developed frequent headaches. Aspirin was prescribed for the next 2 years at varying doses and frequency. During the period, platelet counts ranged between 1 and 3 millio
