The growing demand for Thymus serpyllum biomass to produce drugs, cosmetics and spices necessitates the search for innovative methods mitigating the negative effects of environmental stressors in order to improve its yield under unfavorable conditions. Due to the exposure of plants to salinity stress (SS), we investigated the effect of sugar beet molasses (SBM) on the growth and biochemical parameters related to plants' response to SS. Wild thyme plants were treated for 5 weeks to sodium chloride and 3% molasses solution using two modes of application (soil irrigation or foliar sprays). Plants

1,2-Unsaturated pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are carcinogenic phytochemicals. We previously determined that carcinogenic PAs and PA N-oxides commonly form a set of four (±)-6,7-dihydro-7-hydroxy-1-hydroxymethyl-5H-pyrrolizine (DHP)-DNA adducts, namely, DHP-dG-3, DHP-dG-4, DHP-dA-3, and DHP-dA-4. This set of DHP-DNA adducts has been implicated as a potential biomarker of PA-induced liver tumor initiation from metabolism of individual carcinogenic PAs. To date, it is not known whether this generality occurs from metabolism of PA-containing plant extracts. In this study, we investigate the rat l

Plant essential oils (PEOs) are being studied as a potential alternative to synthetic pesticides in agriculture. PEOs have the potential to control pests both directly, by being toxic or repellent to pests, and indirectly, by activating plant's defense mechanisms. In this study, the effectiveness of five PEOs (Achillea millefolium, Allium sativum, Rosmarinus officinallis, Tagetes minuta, and Thymus zygis) on controlling Tuta absoluta and their impact on the predator Nesidiocoris tenuis was examined. The study revelead that PEOs from A. millefolium and A. sativum-sprayed plants significantly re

BACKGROUND: TThymus plants are well-known medicinal plants and it is believed that the pharmaceutical and therapeutical properties of these plants are related to their essential oils. The quality and quantity of the essential oils, as a secondary metabolite of an aromatic plant, are directly related to the physiological state of the plant. The role of jasmonates in the plant as signal molecules in mediation and up-regulation of plant defense and secondary metabolism processes is well recognized.
OBJECTIVE: With the aim of increasing the performance and stimulating secondary metabolites, this

Thyme has medicinal and aromatic value because of its potent antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. However, the absence of a fully sequenced thyme genome limits functional genomic studies of Chinese native thymes. Thymus quinquecostatus Čelak., which contains large amounts of bioactive monoterpenes such as thymol and carvacrol, is an important wild medicinal and aromatic plant in China. Monoterpenoids are abundant in glandular secretory trichomes. Here, high-fidelity and chromatin conformation capture technologies were used to assemble and annotate the T. quinquecostatus genome at the chro

Glutaminase is an important target that is often over expressed in neurodegenerative and lifestyle related diseases but few effective inhibitors of this enzyme have yet reached clinical trials. Ursolic acid (1), betulinic acid (2) and oleanolic acid (3), three pentacyclic triterpene acids, have been isolated from the leaves of Thymus vulgaris L. Enzyme inhibition experiments demonstrated their inhibitory effects against glutaminase activity. Compound 2 significantly inhibited the glutaminase activity with IC50 of 0.31 mM, stronger than the positive control 6-diazo-5-oxo-L-norleucine (DON) with

Thyme (Thymus spp.) volatiles predominantly consisting of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, serve as antimicrobial, antiseptic and antioxidant in phytomedicine. They also play a key role in plants as secondary metabolites via their potential role against herbivores, attracting pollinators and abiotic stress tolerance. Plant volatiles are affected by different environmental factors including drought. Here, the effect of prolonged water deficit stress on volatile composition was studied on the sensitive and tolerant thyme plant cultivars (T. vulgaris Var. Wagner and T. vulgaris Var. Varico3, resp

We have compared the lymphocyte in vitro proliferative response induced by muscle extract, phytohaemagglutinin, and pokeweed mitogen in peripheral blood lymphocytes of patients with myasthenia gravis, polymyositis, dermatomyositis, and normal subjects. Similar mean responses to antigen and mitogen were seen in cells of all groups of patients. The proliferative responses induced by muscle did not differ in thymic cells from myasthenics as compared with those from cardiac surgery controls. Our findings do not support the hypothesis that cell-mediated immunity to muscle or major impairment of lym
