[A case of thyroid carcinoma required the incision of the thyroid cartilage for inserting the silicone T tube after extensive tracheal resection and reconstruction].

A 57-year-old female with thyroid carcinoma, who had developed tracheal stenosis, underwent extensive tracheal resection and reconstruction. After the tracheal sleeve resection 5.2 cm in length, primary tracheal reconstruction was performed. Although complication did not occur at the anastomotic site, the patient had dyspnea due to cord dysfunction by bilateral recurrent nerve paralysis. After 20 days transnasal intubation we reoperated to perform a tracheostomy under neck incision. But the reconstructed trachea was too short to pull out from the mediastinum. In order to insert the silicone T

A rare case of thyroid cartilage chondroma: diagnostic challenges and the role of multimodal imaging and histopathology.

Chondromas are rare benign cartilaginous tumours, typically arising in the small bones of the hands and feet. Laryngeal chondromas are exceptionally uncommon and account for a very small proportion of head and neck neoplasms. We present a case of a 72-year-old male referred with a painless, slowly enlarging right-sided neck mass. Multimodal imaging, including ultrasound, CT, and MRI, revealed a well-circumscribed lesion with internal calcification arising from the thyroid cartilage. Differential diagnoses included chondroma and low-grade chondrosarcoma. Initial cytological assessment was incon

Diagnosis of thyroid cartilage invasion by laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers based on CT with deep learning.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a convolutional neural network (CNN) model to diagnose thyroid cartilage invasion by laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers observed on computed tomography (CT) images and evaluate the model's diagnostic performance. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 91 cases of laryngeal or hypopharyngeal cancer treated surgically at our hospital during the period April 2010 through May 2023, and we divided the cases into datasets for training (n = 61) and testing (n = 30). We reviewed the CT images and pathological diagnoses in all cases to determine the invasion positive- or negativ

Revisiting femoral cartilage thickness in cases with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in thyroidology: a single institute experience.

OBJECTIVE: Hashimoto's thyroiditis, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis or autoimmune thyroiditis, is a considerable part of the spectrum of chronic autoimmune thyroid gland disorders which is pathologically associated with various degrees of lymphocytic infiltration. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate whether cartilage thickness is affected in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis or not in thyroidology. METHODS: A total of 61 individuals had been evaluated in this case-control study, including 32 euthyroid Hashimoto's thyroiditis patients and 29 healthy subjects comp

[The effect of the configuration of the thyroid cartilage on the asymmetry of the dorsal glottis and its significance for vocal function].

We investigated the effect of thyroid cartilage asymmetry on the posterior glottis. 1. Patients with vocal disorders showing "crossing" of the arytenoid cartilages underwent phoniatric and logopedic investigation as well as CT scan of the larynx in the horizontal plane. The shape of the thyroid cartilage and its relation to the other laryngeal structures were measured and analysed quantitatively. 2. Laryngeal serial sections in the horizontal plane were made and analysed in the same way. 3. Experiments were done in which the configuration of the thyroid cartilage was varied and the muscular in

[Medial displacement of the vocal cord by means of partial thyroid cartilage impression (author's transl)].

In four patients with unilateral vocal cord paralysis and in one chordectomized patient, medial displacement of the vocal cord was performed by means of partial thyroid cartilage impression (Payr 1915). Postoperative results indicate the validity of this method with a possibility of additional teflon injections for excellent vocal rehabilitation.

Two-year follow-up of a thyroid cartilage metastasis from prostate cancer: A case report.

Few case reports describe metastatic prostate cancer to the thyroid cartilage. While earlier reports identified the metastatic lesions upon developing symptoms, more recent ones have detected them via prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography (PSMA PET). Herein, we report the case of a patient with metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer and a PSMA PET-detected lesion in the thyroid cartilage. Over the course of 2 years, he received multiple lines of chemotherapy and hormonal therapy, and his overall disease status fluctuated - some nodal and bony metastases resolve

Thyroid Cartilage Window Approach to Extract a Foreign Body after Migration into the Paraglottic Space.

We report a case of fish bone impaction in the paraglottic space, which caused palsy of the left vocal cord. The patient was a 45-year-old man. He presented with throat pain and hoarseness of voice for approximately one week. The diagnosis was made after careful history taking and confirmed by the use of computed tomography scan as the fish bone was not visible endoscopically under local and general anaesthesia. The patient underwent thyroid cartilage window approach, and the fish bone was retrieved. His symptoms have improved significantly, and he did not require tracheostomy. Other cases rep

How thyroid hormones and their inhibitors affect cartilage growth and shape in the frog Xenopus laevis.

Understanding how skeleton changes shape in ontogeny is fundamental to understanding how its shape diversifies in phylogeny. Amphibians pose a special case because their jaw and throat skeleton consists of cartilages that are dramatically reshaped midway through life to support new feeding and breathing styles. Although amphibian metamorphosis is commonly studied by immersing larvae in thyroid hormones (TH), how individual cartilages respond to TH is poorly understood. This study documents the effects of larval stage and TH type (T4 vs. T3), dose and deprivation on the size, shape and morphoge

Thyroid cartilage and vocal fold reduction: a new phonosurgical method for male-to-female transsexuals.

To date, there is a paucity of literature on surgery to alter vocal pitch in male-to-female transsexuals. The currently available pitch-raising surgical techniques yield neither a good long-term result nor a high enough pitch to simulate a female voice. We investigated a new procedure to alter vocal pitch in 6 male-to-female transsexuals. The principle is to shorten and increase tension on both vocal folds by composite resection of a vertical strip of the anterior thyroid cartilage along with a segment of vocal fold. This resulted in a satisfactory pitch alteration from an average of 147 Hz be

Comparison of thyroid, auricular, and costal cartilage donor sites for laryngotracheal reconstruction in an animal model.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare the use of autogenous thyroid cartilage with that of auricular and costal cartilage in laryngotracheoplasty (LTP). DESIGN: A blinded comparison of LTP techniques using anterior thyroid, auricular, or costal cartilage as graft material in a rabbit model. Histological and anatomical analyses were performed on the laryngeal specimens 1, 4, and 6 weeks after surgery. The following factors were analyzed in each specimen: graft viability, cartilage proliferation, perichondrial viability, degree of necrosis, inflammatory response, and degree of epithelialization.

[Significance of the circumferential involvement of the superior horn tip of the thyroid cartilage in pharyngo-laryngeal cancer].

UNLABELLED: The term "laryngopharyngeal carcinoma" indicates an advanced tumor involving both the supraglottic larynx and the pharynx in which the lesion origin may be difficult to assess. In 1981, Larsson et al. reported on the CT signs useful to distinguish the laryngeal/hypopharyngeal origin of advanced laryngopharyngeal carcinoma. We describe a new CT sign which may serve this purpose, namely the involvement of the thyroid cartilage superior horn tip. The thyroid cartilage superior horn, in fact, is involved early in the lesions originating in the pyriform sinus because of its close anatom

Preservation of thyroid cartilage mobility via lateral cervical approach mitigates anterior neck dysfunction following hemithyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: The conventional Kocher approach (KA) for hemithyroidectomy often leads to anterior neck morbidities, including discomfort, swallowing impairment, and hypertrophic scarring. This study aimed to evaluate whether the lateral cervical approach (LCA) could mitigate these issues by preserving thyroid cartilage mobility (TCM). METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted involving 220 consecutive patients with unilateral papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) who underwent hemithyroidectomy via either LCA (n = 110) or KA (n = 110) between June 2022 and December 2024. TCM was quantified u

The use of thyroid cartilage needle electrodes in intraoperative neuromonitoring during thyroidectomy: Case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The most commonly used recording-side method in intraoperative neural monitoring (IONM) detects the stimulus with the endotracheal tube surface (ETS) electrodes placed in the endotracheal tube during thyroidectomy. The thyroid cartilage needle (TCN) electrode method is an alternative recording-side system in IONM. This study compared two recording-side techniques in IONM. METHODS: Data were retrospectively analyzed from 885 patients who underwent thyroidectomy between January 2012 and December 2020, with 110 ETS and 775 TCN electrodes. Patients' demographics, diagnosis, surgery ty

Sudden infant death from aspiration of milk due to superior cornual defect of thyroid cartilage.

An autopsy case of a 4-month-old boy who died immediately after being fed by a member of the staff of a day-care centre is described in this report. An autopsy certified that the cause of death was the aspiration of milk. There was no other apparent reason for the aspiration of milk into the trachea except for the left superior cornual defect of the thyroid cartilage. We therefore conclude that it was this defect which led to the aspiration of milk into the trachea.

Developing a Swallow-State Monitoring System Using Nasal Airflow, Surface Electromyography, and Thyroid Cartilage Movement Detection.

The safe ingestion of food and water requires appropriate coordination between the respiratory and swallowing pathways. This coordination can be disrupted because of aging or various diseases, thereby resulting in swallowing disorders. No comparative research has been conducted on methods for effectively screening swallowing disorders in individuals and providing timely alerts to their caregivers. Therefore, the present study developed a monitoring and alert system for swallowing disorders by using three types of noninvasive sensors, namely those measuring nasal airflow, surface electromyograp

Dynamic 3D-CT angiography during swallowing for diagnosing hyoid bone or thyroid cartilage compression-induced thromboembolism.

A 76-year-old man was admitted because of visual loss in his right eye, and was diagnosed with central retinal artery occlusion. Brain MRI revealed asymptomatic acute infarctions in the right middle cerebral artery territory. The proximal right internal carotid artery had migrated into a retropharyngeal location, presenting a 50% stenosis with calcified plaques, and was compressed by the hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage during swallowing on dynamic 3D-CT angiography. Partial resection of the hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage was performed and the postoperative course was uneventful. This case s

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion requiring resection of the superior horn of thyroid cartilage: case report.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is the most common surgical procedure utilized for degenerative diseases of the cervical spine. The authors present the case of a 64-year-old man who underwent an ACDF for degenerative changes causing cervical stenosis with myelopathy. The patient's symptoms consisted of pain and weakness of the bilateral upper extremities that slowly progressed over 1.5 years. During the procedure, the superior horn of the thyroid cartilage impeded proper retraction, preventing adequate visualization due to its prominent size. At this point, otorhinolaryngology w
