Thyroid-related hormones as potential markers of hypoxia/ischemia.

This study aimed to investigate the usefulness of the thyroid-related hormones as markers of acute systemic hypoxia/ischemia to identify deaths caused by asphyxiation due to neck compression in human autopsy cases. The following deaths from pathophysiological conditions were examined: mechanical asphyxia and acute/subacute blunt head injury; acute/subacute non-head blunt injury; sharp instrument injury as the hemorrhagic shock condition; drowning as alveolar injury; burn; and death due to cardiac dysfunction. Blood samples were collected from the left and right cardiac chambers and iliac veins

Thyroid hormones and frailty in persons experiencing extreme longevity.

CONTEXT: The aging phenotype is quite heterogeneous, being the result of the capability of each individual to successfully or unsuccessfully response to stressors. The reduction of homeostatic reserve characterizing aging is accompanied by a remodeling of the endocrine system. Frailty has been indicated as a promising way for capturing the physiological decline as well as the biological aging of the individuals. In particular, the Frailty Index (FI), based on the assumption that health deficits tend to accumulate with aging, represents a quantitative measure of extreme interest. OBJECTIVE: Th

Thyroid hormones in male workers exposed to urban stressors.

BACKGROUND: The occupational exposure to urban pollution may induce adverse effects on the human health. METHODS: Plasma levels of thyrotropin stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4) and free triiodothyronine (FT3) of 50 outdoor workers and 50 indoor workers were compared. RESULTS: In the outdoor workers the TSH levels were significantly higher than in the control subjects (p =0.02) while the average of FT3 and FT4 values, was not significantly different compared to the controls (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The differences found for TSH levels between outdoor and indoor workers, though

Mechanisms of action of thyroid hormones in the skeleton.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormones regulate skeletal development, acquisition of peak bone mass and adult bone maintenance. Abnormal thyroid status during childhood disrupts bone maturation and linear growth, while in adulthood it results in altered bone remodeling and an increased risk of fracture SCOPE OF REVIEW: This review considers the cellular effects and molecular mechanisms of thyroid hormone action in the skeleton. Human clinical and population data are discussed in relation to the skeletal phenotypes of a series of genetically modified mouse models of disrupted thyroid hormone signaling.

Pituitary resistance to thyroid hormones: pathophysiology and therapeutic options.

Thyroid hormone secretion suppresses the expression of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), both of which are strictly controlled by a negative feedback loop between the hypothalamus-pituitary and thyroid. Pituitary resistance to thyroid hormone (PRTH) is defined as resistance to the action of thyroid hormone that is more severe in the pituitary than at the peripheral tissue level. Although the molecular basis of PRTH is not well understood, the clinical issue mainly involves imbalance between the hypothalamus-pituitary and peripheral thyroid hormone responsivity, which may induce peripheral thy

Reference intervals for thyroid hormones on the architect analyser.

The objective of this study was to establish reference intervals for thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), total thyronine (TT4) and total triiodothyronine (TT3) on the Architect i2000 analyser (Abbott). Serum samples were obtained from apparently healthy adults (n=217, age 18-90 years) excluding individuals taking oral contraceptives or under hormone replacement therapy. The second group were ambulatory euthyroid patients (n=323) excluding those with a history of thyroid disorders. We also investigated thyroid hormones in sera from euthyroid hos

Effects of thyroid hormones on heart and kidney functions.

Thyroid hormones affect the functions of several organs including the heart and kidney. Using isolated left papillary muscles we have investigated the action of thyroid hormones on the mechanical and electrical properties of the heart. We found that pure hypothyroidism causes a depression in contractile and electrical parameters, but we noticed that superimposed hypoparathyroidism accounts for the marked prolongation in contractile kinetics and action potential duration. At kidney level we have shown that thyroid hormones affect proximal tubular sodium transport and this effect is only partial

Relationship between thyroid hormones and plasma D-dimer levels.

High serum levels of cholesterol and triglycerides are risk factors for coronary heart disease and are strongly related to several haemostatic parameters. Thyroid disorders are a frequent feature in hyperlipidemic patients and are also associated with a variety of haemostatic abnormalities. Therefore, we analysed the relationships between free T4 (fT4) levels and Factor VII and VIII activities (FVIIc and FVIIc), D-Dimers (DDI) and Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1), in a group of 472 healthy patients referred for hyperlipidemia. Fourty patients were found to have primary hypothyroi

Diurnal profiles of thyroid hormones are altered in depression.

Free thyroxine index (FT4I), serum thyroxine (T4) and thyrotrophin concentrations were measured in 45 depressed subjects and 23 controls. The FT4I am/pm ratio was significantly higher in depressed subjects than in controls. This elevated diurnal ratio of thyroid hormones in depression adds to the literature on the chronobiology of affective disorders, and may help to explain differences in thyroid hormone levels in depressed patients in other studies, where time of sampling has seldom been reported.

Maternal thyroid hormones and outcome of pre-eclamptic pregnancies.

Plasma concentrations of total and free thyroxine (TT4 and FT4), total and free triiodothyronine (TT3 and FT3), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), plasma albumin and urate were measured in 39 proteinuric pre-eclamptic patients presenting before labour. Pre-eclamptic patients had significantly lower FT4 and higher TSH concentrations compared with values in third trimester normotensive pregnancies. There was a significantly higher frequency of lower TT4, TT3 and high TSH levels in the subgroup of pre-eclamptic patients who had low-birthweight babies. Thyroid hormone concentrations were not corre

[Hypoglycemic effect of excess thyroid hormones in insulin deficiency].

In experiments on rats with severe streptozotocin diabetes, administration of high doses of L-thyroxine reduces hyperglycemia and glucosuria. It is postulated that glucose utilization by extrahepatic tissues does not depend on direct insulin action and that the Randle cycle is ineffective in hypermetabolism.

[Thyroid hormone treatment].

The autoimmune thyroiditis with overt or subclinical primary hypothyroidism is the most common endocrine disease. Although the diagnosis of hypothyroidism is not difficult, the question when a replacement therapy in subclinical hypothyroidism should be initiated is still under discussion. In patients with overt hypothyroidism defined as low FT4 and elevated TSH or TSH > 10 mU/L a replacement with levothyroxine is clearly indicated. In patients with subclinical hypothyroidism defined as a TSH between 4 and 10 mU/L and normal FT4, the treatment with Levothyroxine depends on the underlying diseas

Resistance to thyroid hormone.

Resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH) is usually dominantly inherited and is characterized by elevated free thyroid hormones in the serum and failure to suppress pituitary thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) secretion with variable refractoriness to hormone action in peripheral tissues. Two major forms of the disorder are recognized: asymptomatic individuals with generalized resistance (GRTH) and patients with thyrotoxic features, suggesting predominant pituitary resistance (PRTH). Molecular genetic analyses indicate that both GRTH and PRTH are associated with diverse mutations in the thyroid horm

Thyroid hormone resistance.

General resistance to the action of thyroid hormones is characterized by increased levels of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid hormone binding proteins but clinical euthyroidism. There is a wide clinical spectrum ranging from patients with congenital goitre and signs of subclinical hypothyroidism to subjects with no physical abnormality. In the most affected patients special physical features have been described. Serum thyrotrophin (TSH) and the response to thyrotrophin releasing hormone (TRH) is mostly normal but may fluctuate being at times elevated and even markedly increased values may b

Association Between Thyroid Hormones, Thyroid Antibodies, and Cardiometabolic Factors in Non-Obese Individuals With Normal Thyroid Function.

BACKGROUND: Hypothyroidism is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, and autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) is the leading cause of hypothyroidism. Recent studies showed that even AIT patients with euthyroidism still had an increased number of early atherosclerotic lesions. However, the precise mechanism is not yet known. This study aimed to investigate the association of thyroid function, thyroid autoimmunity, and cardiometabolic risk factors in non-obese AIT patients with euthyroidism. METHODS: A total of 5,608 non-obese individuals including 1,402 AIT patient and 4,206 sex-, age-,

Thyroid hormones and energy metabolism in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Weight loss, partially caused by hypermetabolism, represents a well-documented and therapeutically relevant feature of the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis phenotype worldwide. In this study, we retrospectively analysed the association between thyroid function and clinical, prognostic and metabolic parameters in a cohort of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in an experienced centre in Germany (n = 1754). Specifically, we examined the relationship between thyroid stimulating hormone levels, age, glucose and body mass index and-in subgroups-phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain levels

Critical Role of Iodine and Thyroid Hormones During Pregnancy.

Iodine is an essential micronutrient that is required for thyroid hormone (TH) synthesis. However, adequate maternal thyroid function is critical for fetal growth and neurodevelopment. Pregnancy increases iodine requirements due to enhanced renal clearance, higher maternal TH production, and transplacental transfer, making pregnant women especially vulnerable to iodine deficiency. In this review, we examine the molecular mechanisms of TH synthesis and regulation, placental transport and metabolism, and the physiological adaptations of thyroid function during gestation. We also analyze the clin

The Association Between Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy and Thyroid Hormones.

We aimed to compare serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (fT4) levels in neonates with different hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) stages undergoing therapeutic hypothermia (TH), and to evaluate the TSH and fT4 levels in neonates with HIE/TH in comparison with a control group. This was a retrospective study conducted between January 2020 and December 2022. The neonates with HIE/TH constituted the study group and the neonates with transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) constituted the control group. The study group consisted of neonates with stage 2 and stage 3 HIE.

Urinary loss of thyroid hormones: An issue to remember.

A 45-year-old woman suffering from primary hypothyroidism, previously well substituted with levothyroxine, was urgently referred from Primary Care to Endocrinology due to very elevated thyrotropin, free thyroxine at low limit of normality, very high cholesterol and generalised oedema. Hypothyroidism was suspected as the main aetiology of this clinical condition. A detailed examination showed nephrotic range proteinuria and the patient was finally diagnosed with lupus nephritis. Urinary loss of thyroid hormones, fundamentally linked to their transport proteins, in patients affected by nephrotic
