We report an outbreak of Trichophyton soudanense causing tinea capitis and corporis in an orphanage in Myanmar. The thirty orphan children were suspected to have anthropophilic tinea but zoonotic tinea could not be excluded as all children were playing with stray dogs. Direct mycological examinations of hair and scalp samples showed filaments but culture assays remained sterile. We revealed T. soudanense as the infectious agent by PCR amplification of extracted fungal DNA and further sequencing of the PCR products. Children were successfully treated by terbinafine and reinfection was prevented

Inflammatory Tinea capitis (TC) is a rare form of TC. The aim of this study was to review epidemiological, clinical and mycological profile of inflammatory TC. We present a retrospective study (1999-2010), enrolled all the cases of inflammatory TC observed at a referral hospital in the northern Tunisia. One hundred and twenty-one patients with inflammatory TC, 83 male patients (68.6%) and 38 female patients (31.4%) were enrolled. The mean age was about 8 years. A majority of TC (71.9%) were in patients lesser than 10 years of age. Positive family history and contact with animals were noted in

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis (TC) is a common superficial fungal infection seen predominantly in children. The etiological factors vary from one region to the other. The clinical and microbiological characteristics of the same were studied in patients up to the age of 12 years seen at a pediatric super specialty hospital in New Delhi, India.
AIMS: To delineate the various patterns of TC observed in North India and to assess for any correlation between the clinical, microscopic and microbiologic findings in the patients seen. Also, to identify the common fungal species responsible for producing T

Analysis of 325 patients (182 males, 143 females) of mycologically proven tinea capitis (TC) seen over a period of two years from January 2001--December 2002 in the Farwaniya region of Kuwait is presented in this study. The age range was 8 months to 17 years. Peak incidence was observed in the 3-14 year age group (79.6%). Positive family history and contact with pets were noted in 22% and 36.7% of the cases, respectively. The non-inflammatory 'gray patch' variety was the most common clinical type, seen in 163 (50.2%) children, followed by the black-dot variant in 100 (30.2%) patients. A signif

Tinea capitis is a frequent reason for dermatology consultation in Morocco. In this work, we report a case of Tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton tonsurans (T. tonsurans), an unusual anthropophilic dermatophyte in Morocco. This pathogen was identified for the first time in our hospital, affecting a young Moroccan judoka. The patient was a 25-year-old man. He was a member of the Moroccan national judo team. He was sent to the parasitology and mycology laboratory for suspicion of tinea capitis. The anamnesis found an almost annual participation in international tournaments and competitions. The

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis is a cutaneous fungal infection common among 3 to 7 year old children but it is rare in the first year of life.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 12-month-old infant with erythematous scalp lesions combined with hair loss. He was suspected of dermatophytosis and mycological analysis of all suspected lesions was performed. Clinical features and culture results confirmed tinea capitis caused by Microsporum canis. The infant patient was treated with griseofulvin for 2 months. However, 15 days later at the end of treatment he presented with a single vesicle posit

A 3-year-old boy presented with multiple lesions of tinea corporis with dermatophytids, and subsequent inflammatory lesions with alopecia on the scalp. At the beginning, topical clobetasone butyrate was prescribed. The infection was diagnosed as dermatophytosis on the basis of positive direct microscopy and fungal culture. The etiological agent was isolated from all sampled sites and identified as Trichophyton verrucosum. Clonal nature of the infection was confirmed by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. The child lived in close vicinity of cattle. He was successfully treated wit

Tinea capitis has become an increasing public health concern in the last decade. The increased incidence of the disease; its sometimes subtle, nonspecific clinical presentation; and the development of tolerance to griseofulvin therapy have led to the need for alternative safe, efficacious, inexpensive therapies that work rapidly. Itraconazole, fluconazole and terbinafine all possess pharmacologic and pharmacokinetic characteristics that theoretically would make them ideal therapies for tinea capitis. However, few randomized double blind controlled studies using these agents have been published

This case report describes a rare occurrence of tinea capitis kerion type caused by Nannizzia gypsea in three siblings. The clinical presentation included pseudo-alopecic plaques with a dirty appearance, erythema, and honey-like crusts. A direct examination revealed ecto-endothrix parasitization in the hair shaft. Shared use of a comb among the siblings was suspected as the mode of transmission. Treatment with oral terbinafine resulted in a complete resolution. Systematic epidemiological surveys on N. gypsea tinea infections are scarce, and preliminary data from our center indicated a higher p

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: In examining any scalp itch or skin lesions, especially in children with long hair, fungal lesions under the hair may not be diagnosed in a timely manner. Additionally, fungal infection of the scalp, known as tinea capitis, is considered a chronic condition and if left untreated, it can lead to alopecia (hair loss) and permanent scarring.
ABSTRACT: Tinea capitis (TC) is a common cutaneous fungal infection in childhood. In this report, we describe the case of an 8-year-old child presenting with erythematous scalp lesions accompanied by hair loss. Upon examination, palpati

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis is a prevalent dermatophyte disorder among children, yet little is known about its occurrence and treatment in children with Down syndrome (DS). This retrospective cohort study aimed to describe and compare the clinical presentation, mycological findings, and treatment response of tinea capitis in children with and without DS.
METHODS: A multicenter retrospective cohort study was conducted using medical records from three clinical dermatology centers in Jordan (2015-2024). Multivariate regression analysis and time-to-event statistics were used to compare clinical sym

Tinea capitis is an infection of the scalp hair follicles and surrounding skin that primarily occurs in prepubertal children. Microsporum canis remains the most common pathogen causing tinea capitis in Asian countries, including South Korea, although the causative organism of this condition varies across geographical regions and time periods. Systemic antifungal agents are the mainstay treatments for tinea capitis; however, the therapeutic responses to antifungal drugs may vary depending on the causative species, and treatment failure may occur owing to drug resistance. Although dermatophytosi

Tinea capitis may be associated with a dermatophytid, which appears as a disseminated eczematous eruption. This phenomenon may occur before or after initiation of systemic antifungal drug therapy and is not an indication for stopping medication. We present here a series of cases that involve 5 children with tinea capitis who developed a dermatophytid before or during the course of their management. In each child, the eruption resolved despite continuation of oral antifungal therapy. Our experience suggests that dermatophytid secondary to tinea capitis is much more common than reported. Further

BACKGROUND: Pediatric alopecia is increasingly common, influenced by conditions like alopecia areata and infections such as tinea capitis, primarily caused by Microsporum canis. Diagnosing tinea capitis in primary care is challenging due to limited access to advanced tools, leading to treatment delays.
OBJECTIVES: This study evaluates the effectiveness of Wood's lamp for early diagnosis of tinea capitis and its role in distinguishing it from other pediatric alopecia types.
METHODS: Fifty pediatric patients under 12 with alopecia were enrolled from March 2023 to March 2024. Data collected inc

Tinea capitis, primarily caused by dermatophytes such as Trichophyton and Microsporum species, is a superficial fungal infection affecting the scalp and hair, commonly observed in prepubertal children but rare in adults. Here we report a unique case of an adult female with tinea capitis presenting as diffused alopecia and erythema inflammation on the scalp's apex, mimicking seborrheic dermatitis. Examination of the hair and scalp using fluorescence microscopy and fungal culture identified the presence of hyphae from Malassezia globosa, Malassezia furfur and Microsporum canis. The patient under
