[Tinnitus. II.--treatment].

Because of varying origin different therapy of tinnitus methods are applied (surgical, pharmacological, psychotherapy). Treatment of objective tinnitus of vascular origin is usually surgical. It is similar as in the case of tinnitus of mechanical origin. The procedure of operating. Treatment of subjective tinnitus is much more complicated because of difficulties with determining of its occurence. We can separate morbus Ménière, otosclerosis, which require precise treatment. Apart from these disease treatment of subjective tinnitus is multidirectional. It may include pharmacological treatment,

Iatrogenic pulsatile tinnitus.

We present an unusual case of iatrogenic arteriovenous malformation following a myringoplasty and its treatment by embolization. Thorough examination and investigation of patients with pulsatile tinnitus is stressed. Angiography is essential to diagnose life-threatening and treatable lesions in the presence of normal otoscopy, audiologic assessment and enhanced computed tomography.

Neural markers associated with improved tinnitus perception after tinnitus retraining therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) has been widely used in tinnitus management. However, its efficacy is often assessed through subjective methods. Here, we aimed to assess potential neural changes following TRT using mismatch negativity (MMN). DESIGN: Chronic tinnitus (>6 months) patients participated in a six-month TRT program. We collected tinnitus psychoacoustic features and gathered the tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) before and after TRT. We also used a multi-featured paradigm, including frequency, intensity, duration, location and silent gap deviants, to elicit MMN response

Quantifying tinnitus suppression in cochlear implantation using tinnitus interval-limited tracking.

OBJECTIVES: Quantify the effects of cochlear implants (CI) on tinnitus suppression in patients with previous cochlear implantation using a novel audiologic sequence: Tinnitus Interval Limited Tracking (TILT). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: Consecutive patients with tinnitus and previous cochlear implantation for profound hearing loss underwent an audiologic testing sequence called TILT. Patients rated tinnitus severity using the validated Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) as well as a visual analog scale at baseline and in a variety of audiologic scenarios. Changes in tinni

Clear Tinnitus, middle-ear pressure, and tinnitus relief: a prospective trial.

GOAL: Our goal was to establish the efficacy, in a 12-week period, of Clear Tinnitus for tinnitus relief in patients with tinnitus of the severe, disabling type. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that tinnitus relief with Clear Tinnitus reflects improvement in the sensory component of the tinnitus complaint by controlling the factor of aeration of the middle ears and improving eustachian tube function. METHOD: In a prospective clinical trial of a homeopathic preparation--Clear Tinnitus--we attempted to identify in 15 tinnitus patients (14 male, 1 female; mean age, 47.6 years) its clinical efficacy

Assessing tinnitus and prospective tinnitus therapeutics using a psychophysical animal model.

Subjective tinnitus is a common and often debilitating disorder that is difficult to study because it is a perceptual state without an objective stimulus correlate. Studying tinnitus in humans is further complicated by the heterogeneity of tinnitus quality, severity, and associated hearing loss. As a consequence, the pathophysiology of tinnitus is poorly understood and treatments are often unsuccessful. In the present study, an animal psychophysical model was developed to reflect several features of tinnitus observed in humans. Chronic tinnitus was induced in rats by a single intense unilatera

Work absence and ability in tinnitus patients: the role of hyperacusis and tinnitus severity.

OBJECTIVE: Identify factors predicting work capacity among patients with tinnitus and hyperacusis. DESIGN AND STUDY SAMPLE: This study employed a cross-sectional design, collecting data from four Norwegian audiology clinics (N = 80) and two Norwegian rehabilitation centres (N = 47). The patients in this study were invited to complete a web-based questionnaire. RESULTS: This study found significant positive correlations between levels of tinnitus, hyperacusis, and mental distress (rs in the range .51 - .74). Logistic regression models showed that reduced work capacity was predicted by both ti

Rapid Assessment of Tinnitus Complaints with a Modified Version of the Tinnitus and Hearing Survey.

The objective of this project was to establish cutoff scores on the tinnitus subscale of the Tinnitus and Hearing Survey (THS) using a large sample of United States service members (SM) with the end goal of guiding clinical referrals for tinnitus evaluation. A total of 4,589 SM undergoing annual audiometric surveillance were prospectively recruited to complete the THS tinnitus subscale (THS-T). A subset of 1,304 participants also completed the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI). The original 5-point response scale of the THS (THS-T16) was modified to an 11-point scale (THS-T40) for some participa

The blinking eye as a window into tinnitus: A new animal model of tinnitus in the macaque.

Tinnitus is a highly prevalent, largely untreatable auditory disorder, characterized by the perception of phantom sound often in the form of incessant ringing or hissing. Despite longstanding research with animal models, its underlying pathophysiological causes remain poorly understood. Given recent data characterizing tinnitus as a disorder with a strong neurocognitive component, progress in the field might be hastened by testing a wider spectrum of animal models, including nonhuman primates, and by developing alternative measurement techniques of tinnitus, especially in animals. Amplitude Modulated Noise for Tinnitus Suppression in Tonal and Noise-Like Tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: The phenomenon of short-term tinnitus suppression by different forms of acoustic stimulation is referred to as residual inhibition (RI). RI can be triggered in the majority of tinnitus cases and was found to be depending on the used intensity, length or types of sounds. Past research already stressed the impact of noise stimulation as well as the superiority of amplitude modulated (AM) pure tones at the individual tinnitus frequency for RI in tonal tinnitus. Recently a novel approach for the determination of noise-like tinnitus characteristics was proposed. OBJECTIVES: The aim of

Is Electroacupuncture Treatment More Effective in Somatic Tinnitus Than in Nonsomatic Tinnitus?

Background: In recent years, evidence has been accumulating linking subjective tinnitus to the somatosensory system. Somatic tinnitus is defined as tinnitus in which forceful contractions of jaw and neck muscles modulate the psychoacoustic attributes of tinnitus, such as pitch and loudness. Being a somatosensory-based treatment modality, needling might well be more effective for treating somatic than nonsomatic tinnitus. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of electroacupuncture (EA) treatment between patients with somatic and nonsomatic tinnitus. Materials and Methods:

Neural substrates of tinnitus in animal and human cortex : cortical correlates of tinnitus.

Animal models of tinnitus complement human findings and potentially deepen our insight into the neural substrates of tinnitus. The fact that animal data are largely based on recordings from the auditory system, in particular from subcortical structures, makes comparison with human electrophysiological data from predominantly cortical areas difficult. Electro/magnetoencephalography and imaging data extend beyond the auditory cortex. The most challenging link to be made is the one between the macroscopic data in humans and the microscopic (single neuron action potentials) and mesoscopic (local f

Music therapy for chronic tinnitus: variability of tinnitus pitch in the course of therapy.

BACKGROUND: In general, tinnitus pitch has been observed to be variable across time for most patients experiencing tinnitus. Some tinnitus therapies relate to the dominant tinnitus pitch in order to adjust therapeutic interventions. As studies focusing on tinnitus pitch rarely conduct consecutive pitch matching in therapeutic settings, little is known about the course and variability of tinnitus pitch during therapeutic interventions. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the variability and development of tinnitus pitch in the course of therapeutic interventions. Tinnitus pit

Disentangling tinnitus distress and tinnitus presence by means of EEG power analysis.

The present study investigated 24 individuals suffering from chronic tinnitus (TI) and 24 nonaffected controls (CO). We recorded resting-state EEG and collected psychometric data to obtain information about how chronic tinnitus experience affects the cognitive and emotional state of TI. The study was meant to disentangle TI with high distress from those who suffer less from persistent tinnitus based on both neurophysiological and behavioral data. A principal component analysis of psychometric data uncovers two distinct independent dimensions characterizing the individual tinnitus experience. T

Management of Tinnitus In Covid-19 Outbreak- A Comparative Study Between Mindfulness Based Tinnitus Stress Reduction And Tinnitus Retraining Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Covid-19 pandemic has caused a profound impact on the lives of people and has given rise to many mental health issues like anxiety and stress which eventually has given rise to bothersome tinnitus. In case of people having pre-existing tinnitus, the pandemic has raised the problem of tinnitus and the co-morbid issues related to tinnitus and severely affected the overall quality of life. Hence, we need to find a mean for home-based management of tinnitus and its associated problems. OBJECTIVE: To understand the mechanism of mental health and to compare between the mindfulness-based
