Study protocol for enhanced CJD surveillance in the 65+ years population group in Scotland: an observational neuropathological screening study of banked brain tissue donations for evidence of prion disease.

INTRODUCTION: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a human prion disease that occurs in sporadic, genetic and acquired forms. Variant CJD (vCJD) is an acquired form first identified in 1996 in the UK. To date, 178 cases of vCJD have been reported in the UK, most of which have been associated with dietary exposure to the bovine spongiform encephalopathy agent. Most vCJD cases have a young age of onset, with a median age at death of 28 years. In the UK, suspected cases of vCJD are reported to the UK National Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Research & Surveillance Unit (NCJDRSU). There is, however, a con

Endothelial quality of pre-cut posterior corneal lamellae for Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty with a stromal rim (DMEK-S): two-year outcome of manual preparation in an ocular tissue bank.

To assess the quantitative and qualitative parameters of pre-cut posterior corneal lamellae for Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty with a stromal rim (DMEK-S) prepared manually in the Ocular Tissue Bank Prague. All 65 successfully prepared pre-cut posterior corneal lamellae provided for grafting during a 2-year period were analyzed retrospectively. The lamellae, consisting of a central zone of endothelium-Descemet membrane surrounded by a supporting peripheral stromal rim, were prepared manually from corneoscleral buttons having an endothelial cell density higher than 2,500 cells/mm(2)

Evidence that levels of nine essential metals in post-mortem human-Alzheimer's-brain and ex vivo rat-brain tissues are unaffected by differences in post-mortem delay, age, disease staging, and brain bank location.

Studies of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) using post mortem brain tissues have uncovered several perturbations in metals such as copper, iron, and zinc. However, studies of the effects of key, potentially confounding variables on these tissues are currently lacking. Moreover, human-brain tissues have limited availability, further enhancing the difficulty of matching potentially-significant variables including age, sex-matching, post-mortem delay (PMD), and neuropathological stage. This study aimed to investigate the effects of such factors and how they might infl

[The 2009 performance report of the German cornea banks].

BACKGROUND: In Germany, human tissue for corneal and amniotic transplantation is supplied by 27 cornea banks. METHODS: The Section for Tissue Transplantation and Biotechnology of the German Ophthalmological Society records the cornea banks' activities by means of an annual questionnaire. RESULTS: In 2009, a total of 4,818 corneal grafts were processed by 21 responding cornea banks, and 57% were deemed suitable for transplantation. This ratio is slightly higher than the European average. In addition, German cornea banks released 1,257 amniotic grafts in 2009. DISCUSSION: German cornea banks

An Australian brain bank and the future of alcohol and major neuropsychiatric disorders research.

Post-mortem human brain banks are a key resource for researching brain diseases. The New South Wales Brain Tissue Resource Centre (BTRC) is a brain bank that uniquely focuses on the recruitment, preparation, and dissemination of tissue from patients with alcohol use disorder and controls. Our controls are prospectively followed through their lifetime via a self-reported questionnaire and yearly updates, and these standardised data allow future matching to disease cases based on individual study needs. Brain banks are expensive to run, and their sustainability is an ever-present topic of concer

Overview of safety issues concerning the preparation and processing of soft-tissue allografts.

With the increasing use of allograft tissue and the recent infections found in patients undergoing surgical procedures, the current practices that prepare grafts for implantation must be examined. Initially, most tissue banks harvest allografts aseptically. There are many steps in the different techniques of preparation and processing of allograft tissue. Before allograft tissue is ready for clinical use, it undergoes specific disinfection methods, according to the individual tissue bank's specific process. Tissue banks use in-process bactericidal and virucidal steps via physical cleaning, che

Review for special issue: Corneal lamellar surgery: Present outcomes and future perspectives.

Since the establishment of the first eye bank in the 1940s, their role has evolved to face new challenges. With the recent development of lamellar keratoplasties, eye banks play an even bigger role in the selection and preparation of donor tissues. The increasing number of keratoplasty techniques and the high demand for "ready-to-use" tissues are challenging eye banks to improve and develop new preparation techniques. Besides necessary examinations, new approaches of tissue analysis in eye banks allow a better/optimized selection of corneal tissues. These new challenges in tissue preservation,

Supply of human allograft tissue in Canada.

There is relatively little known about the supply for allograft tissues in Canada. The major aim of this study is to quantify the current or "Known Supply" of human allograft tissue (bone, tendons, soft tissue, cardiovascular, ocular and skin) from known tissue banks in Canada, to estimate the "Unknown Supply" of human allograft tissue available to Canadian users from other sources, and to investigate the nature and source of these tissue products. Two surveys were developed; one for tissue banks processing one or more tissue types and the other specific to eye banks. Thirty nine sites were in

Impact of Sepsis on Corneal Transplantation.

Corneal transplantation is an exceedingly common and pivotal procedure in the management of corneal disease. The increasing demand for corneal transplantation underscores the importance of current guidelines and methodologies for donor tissue screening and collection. A recent FDA notice of inspectional focus on United States eye banks brought concerns about donor sepsis being a source for recipient infections and improper eye bank screening practices. However, there is evidence to suggest that septic donors do not increase the risk of transmission of infections associated with corneal grafts.

Are For-Profit Eye Banks a Good Idea?

For-profit eye banks have been advocated because they stimulate innovation and improve the quantity and quality of corneal tissue. The claims of for-profit eye banks do not stand up to scrutiny and promote discord in the recovery and distribution field. Commercialization can adversely affect public perception of corneal donation.

Current status of semen banking in the USA.

Anonymous donor sperm banking has been a fundamental aspect of reproductive medicine for several decades. In 1987, >170,000 women in the USA were treated for infertility using artificial insemination. Current estimates suggest that the number of women seeking treatment for infertility has increased markedly since that time; however, there are no accurate, updated data to indicate the magnitude of that increase. Most anonymous donor sperm banks in the USA can be categorized as one of three types based upon administrative structure: (i) physician practice based; (ii) hospital/clinic based; or (i

The contribution of brain banks to knowledge discovery in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: A systematic review.

Over the past decade, considerable efforts have been made to accelerate pathophysiological understanding of fatal neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with brain banks at the forefront. In addition to exploratory disease mechanisms, brain banks have aided our understanding with regard to clinical diagnosis, genetics and cell biology. Across neurodegenerative disorders, the impact of brain tissue in ALS research has yet to be quantified. This review aims to outline (i) how postmortem tissues from brain banks have influenced our understanding of ALS over the las

Impact of routine inquiry legislation in Oregon on eye donations.

Routine inquiry legislation can significantly affect procurement of donor eye tissues. Oregon Revised Statute (ORS) 97.268 was the first legislation of this type passed in the United States. In the first 12 months under this legislation, the Oregon Lions Eye Bank obtained, 2,312 eyes, sustaining a 135% increase in donor eye procurement over the yearly average for 1984-1985. During the first 12 months of routine inquiry, 484 corneas suitable for penetrating keratoplasty were obtained versus an annual average of 291 corneas for 1984-1985. Tissues for other transplant purposes and for research ha

Straight talk with...James Ironside. [Interviewed by Jon Evans].

Would you entrust your brain to a bank? Well, many people do after they die, and such brain banks-often funded by government agencies or disease charities-are essential for neuroscience research. They collect and store the healthy and diseased brain specimens that neuroscientists need to explore neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia and autism. Each brain bank typically has a limited supply of samples and tends to operate fairly independently. This means that researchers often have to trawl through numerous brain banks to find their desired specimens. Furthermore, t

Human immunodeficiency virus p24 antigen testing in cornea donors.

PURPOSE: Testing for the p24 antigen of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may detect early HIV infection in the seronegative window; however, falsely reactive results may occur in cadaver specimens. Although neither the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) nor the Eye Bank Association of America requires p24 testing of cornea donors, many tissue banks using other organs from cornea donors do perform this assay, and the FDA requires that eye banks reject corneal tissue if a reactive p24 assay is reported. We investigated the impact of p24 testing on eye banking and corneal transplantation.

Current practices of commercial cryobanks in screening prospective donors for genetic disease and reproductive risk.

OBJECTIVE: To determine how the screening practices of commercial semen banks vary from published guidelines, which factors influence cryobanks to exclude prospective semen donors for genetic reasons, and the current role of clinical geneticists/genetic counselors in evaluating prospective semen donors. DESIGN: The genetic screening of prospective donors by commercial semen banks was evaluated using written questionnaires completed by bank directors. Responses were analyzed to determine exclusion criteria, adherence to published guidelines, and contribution of genetic professionals. SETTING

Thymoquinone mitigates obesity and diabetic parameters through regulation of major adipokines, key lipid metabolizing enzymes and AMPK/p-AMPK in diet-induced obese rats.

Over the past ten years, corneal transplantation surgical techniques have undergone revolutionary changes. Since its inception, traditional full thickness corneal transplantation has been the treatment to restore sight in those limited by corneal disease. Some disadvantages to this approach include a high degree of post-operative astigmatism, lack of predictable refractive outcome, and disturbance to the ocular surface. The development of Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK), transplanting only the posterior corneal stroma, Descemet's membrane, and endothelium, has dramatically
