Link between childhood tobacco exposure and childhood psoriasis: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood psoriasis is not uncommon, and its prevalence is estimated to be 128 per 100,000 children. There are sparse data regarding intrauterine and environmental tobacco smoke exposure and the development of psoriasis in childhood. In this study, we aimed to investigate these parameters in the Turkish pediatric population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 130 children with psoriasis and 390 children as controls. For each risk factor, odds ratios of psoriasis as an estimate of relative risks and corresponding 95% confidence interval were calculated. Univariate conditional log

Smoking cessation should have more emphasis within Tobacco Control? The case for.

Smoking cessation is usually mentioned last in the chain of established measures to improve Tobacco Control. This seems logical, as smoking cessation is a secondary or tertiary preventative measure only. In the recently proposed Tobacco Control Scale (TCS) using 6 Tobacco Control measures pricing is considered most important, and smoking cessation least important. For current smokers secondary or tertiary preventative measures are necessary with smoking cessation being the most effective one as its impact on health is immediate. Pricing, on the other hand, is less effective in inciting current

Tobacco control and nicotine addiction in Canada: current trends, management and challenges.

Despite a significant decrease in tobacco use over the past four decades, cigarette smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death and disease in Canada. Nicotine addiction, unequal access to available support programs and gaps in continuity of health care are recognized as the main barriers to smoking cessation. To overcome these obstacles and to reach the Federal Tobacco Control Strategy goal of reducing smoking prevalence in Canada from 19% to 12% by 2011, several Canadian health care organizations developed extensive sets of recommendations. Improved access to affordable pharmacoth

Poor implementation of tobacco control measures and lack of education influences the intention to quit tobacco: a structural equation modelling approach.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco consumption remains a public health issue and is one of the major causes of death in India. This study presents a validated conceptual model to assess the interaction between education, perceived application of tobacco control measures, type of tobacco and their effects on the intention to quit tobacco. Additionally, the direct and mediating roles of tobacco use -frequency, -duration, and -dependency on the intention to quit is also investigated. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out, and data from tobacco users of six randomly selected states in Ind

Mental health and support for rigorous tobacco control strategies in South Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco endgame strategy includes policies to end the tobacco epidemic. As tobacco smoking prevalence is higher among people with mental health conditions (MHC), understanding the impact of rigorous tobacco control strategies for this group is critical. This study examined support for five tobacco control strategies among people with MHCs: increasing tobacco product tax, reducing tobacco retail locations, ending tobacco sales in alcohol-licensed venues, limiting retailers to one tobacco point of sale and reduced nicotine in smoked tobacco. METHODS: Cross-sectional surveying of a

Tobacco control in Türkiye: A brief review of achievements, challenges, and prospects.

INTRODUCTION: The global burden of tobacco is a significant public health concern, causing millions of deaths, illnesses, and economic losses annually. In Türkiye, tobacco use is deeply ingrained in society, with historical roots dating back to Ottoman times. The nation faces challenges such as high smoking rates, gender disparities, and the popularity of non-cigarette tobacco products. Despite these issues, Türkiye has adhered to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and implemented MPOWER strategies to combat tobacco use effectively. This review aims to synthesize Türkiye's

Assessing sustainability effects of tobacco use and control in global supply chains.

Tobacco use presents substantial challenges for the environment, social and economic development along global supply chains. Here we assess the global sustainability impacts of tobacco use and control across global supply chains in 164 countries and regions. We find that tobacco use in the top ten downstream countries drove over 50% of global upstream impacts. High-income countries tended to have larger per capita impacts than low-income countries, displacing 42% of health burden and 34% of greenhouse gas emissions to upstream low-income countries. We also observe declines in environmental str

How has the brain disease model of addiction contributed to tobacco control?

Our paper evaluates the extent to which the brain disease model of addiction (BDMA) has contributed to reducing the prevalence of tobacco smoking and  tobacco-related harm over the past 20 years. We discuss the ways in which genetic and neuroscience research on nicotine addiction have contributed to our understanding of tobacco smoking. We then examine the extent to which the BDMA has produced more effective treatments to assist smoking cessation. We also assess the degree to which the BDMA has contributed to the tobacco control policies that have produced substantial reductions in tobacco-rel

Tobacco control policies and smoking cessation treatment utilization: A moderated mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco policies, including clean indoor air laws and cigarette taxes, increase smoking cessation in part by stimulating the use of cessation treatments. We explored whether the associations between tobacco policies and treatment use varies across sociodemographic groups. METHODS: We used data from 62,165 U.S. adult participants in the 2003 and 2010/11 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS) who reported smoking cigarettes during the past-year. We built on prior structural equation models used to quantify the degree to which smoking cessation treatment us

Projected effects of tobacco smoking on worldwide tuberculosis control: mathematical modelling analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Almost 20% of people smoke tobacco worldwide--a percentage projected to rise in many poor countries. Smoking has been linked to increased individual risk of tuberculosis infection and mortality, but it remains unclear how these risks affect population-wide tuberculosis rates. DESIGN: We constructed a state transition, compartmental, mathematical model of tuberculosis epidemics to estimate the impact of alternative future smoking trends on tuberculosis control. We projected tuberculosis incidence, prevalence, and mortality in each World Health Organization region from 2010 to 2050,

An analysis of tobacco industry marketing to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations: strategies for mainstream tobacco control and prevention.

Research on adult tobacco use consistently shows a higher prevalence among lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender (LGBT) populations than among the general population-reasons why are largely unknown, and counterstrategies are critical. Tobacco industry marketing, uncovered when the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) forced companies to share its internal documents, provided insight. The American Legacy Foundation uncovered the industry campaign Project SCUM (Sub-Culture Urban Marketing) aimed at gays and the homeless. The formerly secret documents revealed specific marketing toward LGBT, whose rates

Adherence to the Tobacco Control Act, 2007: presence of a workplace policy on tobacco use in bars and restaurants in Nairobi, Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Despite extensive knowledge about effective tobacco control interventions, the prevalence of tobacco use in many middle- and low-income countries continues to rise. In these countries, public appreciation of levels of protection provided by laws and regulations on tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke is limited. After ratification of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, Kenya enacted the Tobacco Control Act, 2007, banning smoking in public places except in designated smoking areas. OBJECTIVE: To assess adherence to the Tobacco Control Act, 2007 by determining the pr

Tobacco use and second hand smoke as risk factors for diseases in Nigeria: implications for collaborative research and multilevel tobacco control strategies.

Tobacco smoking and secondhand smoke constitute overwhelmingly the most significant risk factor for premature preventable deaths from cancer and across the board for chronic diseases in Nigeria. This paper reviews the tobacco policy in Nigeria and the risk factors for initiation and addiction to tobacco use among youths and young adults. Electronic databases and selected articles about tobacco use, second hand smoke were searched. Tobacco use alone is currently ranked fourth in the world in its contribution to years of life lost. Current estimates of tobacco epidemic show that 22.6% males and
