Tobacco Product Use Among Adults - United States, 2019.

Cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States (1). The prevalence of current cigarette smoking among U.S. adults has declined over the past several decades, with a prevalence of 13.7% in 2018 (2). However, a variety of combustible, noncombustible, and electronic tobacco products are available in the United States (1,3). To assess recent national estimates of tobacco product use among U.S. adults aged ≥18 years, CDC analyzed data from the 2019 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). In 2019, an estimated 50.6 million U.S. adults (20.8%) repor

Gender influences in tobacco use and cessation interventions.

Smoking rates among and between men and women are in large part a reflection of the influence of gender and its intersections with other social factors including ethnicity, age, and social class that influence tobacco use and, ultimately, tobacco reduction and cessation. In this article, opportunities for developing and delivering gender-sensitive (programs addressing gender) and gender-specific (programs designed for men or women) interventions in the context of tobacco dependence treatment are discussed.

Treating tobacco use and dependence in clinical practice.

Physicians are in a unique position to advise smokers to quit by the ability to integrate the various aspects of nicotine dependence. This review provides an overview of the intervention strategies for smokers presented in a primary care setting. The strategies that are used for smoking cessation counselling differ according to the patient's readiness to quit. For smokers who do not intend to give up smoking, physicians should inform about tobacco use and the benefits of cessation. For smokers who are dissonant, physicians should use motivational strategies, such as discussing the barriers to

Alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug use among women.

Although the prevalence of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use among women is lower than that among men, women suffer unique adverse health effects from these substances. Furthermore, the use of these substances during pregnancy poses special risks to mother and fetus, including placental accidents, intrauterine growth retardation, congenital anomalies, and premature birth. Primary care clinicians should ask all women about their patterns of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use and should offer targeted interventions to those using these products.

Popular films do not reflect current tobacco use.

This study examined trends in tobacco use in a random sample of 2 of the 20 top-grossing US films each year from 1960 through 1990 (62 films). The overall rate of tobacco use did not change. Films continue to portray smokers as successful, attractive White males. Smoking groups became larger, smoking alone declined, hostility and stress reduction were increasingly associated with smoking, and smoking by minor characters increased. Although smoking among elite characters fell, it remained nearly three times as prevalent as in actual population data during the 3 decades. Events involving young p

Accurately classifying cannabis blunt use as tobacco-cannabis co-use versus exclusive cannabis use.

BACKGROUND: Historically, blunt use constituted tobacco-cannabis co-use based on the products available for creating blunts (e.g., hollowed-out cigars filled with cannabis). With the introduction of tobacco-free blunt wraps (e.g., hemp wraps), blunt use now may constitute tobacco-cannabis co-use or exclusive cannabis use. We examined adolescents' use of tobacco and tobacco-free blunt products and highlighted how misclassification of tobacco-cannabis co-use versus exclusive cannabis use may occur if products used to make blunts are not assessed. METHODS: 4855 students from eight Connecticut hi

The Impoverishing Effect of Tobacco Use in Indonesia.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking households in Indonesia diverted a significant share of their budget to tobacco. Tobacco expenditure is deemed unproductive, as it crowds out resources from essential commodities and increases health care expenditure driven by tobacco-induced diseases. Therefore, despite having adequate resources, some smoking families in Indonesia may spend less on basic needs, which inadvertently puts their standard of living below the poverty line. AIMS AND METHODS: Employing data from 2021 (March) Indonesia's Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS), this research aims to quantify the impoveri

Tobacco Product Use Among Adults - United States, 2021.

Commercial cigarette smoking among U.S. adults has declined during the preceding 5 decades (1,2); however, tobacco product use remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, and some populations continue to be disproportionately affected by tobacco use (1,2). To assess recent national estimates of commercial tobacco use among U.S. persons aged ≥18 years, CDC, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Cancer Institute analyzed 2021 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data. In 2021, an estimated 46 million U.S. adults (18.7%) reported currentl

Stressors Associated with Tobacco Use Among Trans Women.

PURPOSE: Tobacco use is prevalent among sexual and gender minorities (SGM), yet few studies have examined the specific drivers of tobacco use among trans women. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of proximal, distal, and structural stressors associated with tobacco use among trans women. METHODS: This study is based on a cross-sectional sample of trans women (n=162) living in Chicago and Atlanta. Analyses were conducted to examine the association between stressors, protective factors, and tobacco use using a structural equation modeling framework. Proximal stressors (transgend

Tobacco Product Use Among Adults - United States, 2020.

Although cigarette smoking has declined over the past several decades, a diverse landscape of combustible and noncombustible tobacco products has emerged in the United States (1-4). To assess recent national estimates of commercial tobacco product use among U.S. adults aged ≥18 years, CDC analyzed data from the 2020 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). In 2020, an estimated 47.1 million U.S. adults (19.0%) reported currently using any commercial tobacco product, including cigarettes (12.5%), e-cigarettes (3.7%), cigars (3.5%), smokeless tobacco (2.3%), and pipes* (1.1%).† From 2019 to 2020

Billing Practices Among US Tobacco Use Treatment Providers.

OBJECTIVES: The US Affordable Care Act (ACA) now requires almost all health insurance plans to cover tobacco use treatment (TUT), but TUT remains underutilized. METHODS: We conducted an anonymous online survey of US TUT providers in 2016 regarding their billing practices.
