Prospective study of long COVID-related psychological and biological outcomes in individuals with tobacco use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with tobacco use disorder (TUD) may be particularly vulnerable to the challenges following long COVID. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed whether individuals with TUD and no prior neuropsychiatric conditions developed new symptoms following long COVID-19 infection. METHODS: A cohort of 104 adults with TUD completed psychological and biological assessments before the COVID-19 pandemic and were reevaluated four months post-long COVID diagnosis. Evaluations covered mood symptoms, sleep, perceived stress, quality of life, and serum cortisol. RESULTS: The participants exhibit

The structural and functional brain alternations in tobacco use disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: While numerous previous studies have indicated that nicotine intake results in gray matter and functional brain abnormalities in tobacco use disorder (TUD), the majority of results could not be replicated or even reversed. Consequently, it is important to utilize relevant coordinate data for a comprehensive meta-analysis to identify the shared patterns of structural, functional, and multimodal alternations in TUD. METHOD: The present study conducted a systematic retrieval of studies published on PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus from January 1, 2010, to December 12, 2023, to iden

Methylation of the Oxytocin, Oxytocin Receptor, and Vasopressin Gene Promoters in Tobacco Use Disorder during Cessation.

INTRODUCTION: Vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OT) exert sex-specific effects on social pair bonding and stress reactions while also influencing craving in substance use disorders. In this regard, intranasal oxytocin (OT) and AVP antagonists present potential treatments for tobacco use disorder (TUD). Since transcription of both hormones is also regulated by gene methylation, we hypothesized sex-specific changes in methylation levels of the AVP, OT, and OT receptor (OXTR) gene during nicotine withdrawal. METHODS: The study population consisted of 49 smokers (29 males, 20 females) and 51 health

STin2 VNTR polymorphism is associated with comorbid tobacco use and mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: There is a significant comorbidity between mood disorders and tobacco use disorder (TUD), which may be related to both genetic and environmental factors. Gene variants of the 5-HT transporter, such as STin2 VNTR (a variable number of tandem repeats in the functional serotonin transporter intron 2) may be associated with mood disorders and TUD. AIMS: This study aimed to delineate the association between the STin2 genetic polymorphism and comorbid TUD and mood disorders, including depression or bipolar disorder. METHODS: We examined the STin2 VNTR polymorphism in never-smokers (n=1

Family and peer influences on tobacco use among adolescents with psychiatric disorders.

The purpose of this study was to examine family and peer influences on smoking behaviors among 239 (191 smokers; 48 nonsmokers) psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents. Participants were queried using scales to measure parental supervision and monitoring, parenting style, adolescent-parent communication, family conflict and relations with parents, and the importance placed on life goals. The results of this study are consistent with previous findings from general population studies. Psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents' smoking status were also correlated with their siblings', peers', and

Association of cannabis use disorder with atrial fibrillation in young men without concomitant tobacco use: Insights from nationwide propensity matched analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent data are inconclusive regarding the risk of arrhythmias among young cannabis users. Furthermore, many young adults use both cannabis and tobacco, which could add a residual confounding effect on outcomes. So, we studied young men who have cannabis use disorder (CUD) excluding tobacco use disorder (TUD) to understand their independent association with atrial fibrillation (AF) and related outcomes. AIM: To study the association of CUD with AF and related outcomes. METHODS: We used weighted discharge records from National Inpatient Sample (2019) to assess the baseline charact

Electronic Cigarettes: an Overlooked Tool to Alleviate Disparities in Tobacco Use Disorder Among People with Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders.

The remarkable decline in cigarette smoking since 1964 has plateaued; approximately 12.5% of Americans still smoke. People who continue to smoke are largely members of marginalized groups, such as people with behavioral health conditions (BHC), encompassing both mental health and substance use disorders. Certified smoking cessation interventions can increase smoking abstinence in trials in people with BHC, yet smoking rates remain markedly increased, leading to increased mortality from smoking-related diseases, and worsening health disparities. A novel approach tailored to the unique needs, ch

Patient experiences with tobacco use during substance use disorder treatment and early recovery: a mixed method analysis of phone interview responses.

Tobacco use and related mortality remain disproportionately high among individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs). Though engagement in tobacco cessation interventions is associated with improved long-term recovery, many individuals in SUD treatment do not participate. The goal of the present study was to better understand patient views regarding tobacco use/cessation during residential SUD treatment, in order to decrease barriers for this vulnerable population. This study utilized a cross-sectional design and mixed methods analysis. Following discharge from residential SUD treatment, ind

Associations between polygenic risk for tobacco and alcohol use and liability to tobacco and alcohol use, and psychiatric disorders in an independent sample of 13,999 Australian adults.

BACKGROUND: Substance use, substance use disorders (SUDs), and psychiatric disorders commonly co-occur. Genetic risk common to these complex traits is an important explanation; however, little is known about how polygenic risk for tobacco or alcohol use overlaps the genetic risk for the comorbid SUDs and psychiatric disorders. METHODS: We constructed polygenic risk scores (PRSs) using GWAS meta-analysis summary statistics from a large discovery sample, GWAS & Sequencing Consortium of Alcohol and Nicotine use (GSCAN), for smoking initiation (SI; N = 631,564), age of initiating regular smoking

Oral Cancer Hazards Related to Tobacco Use and a Transtheoretical Model Assessment of Preparedness of Individuals With Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders to Quit Tobacco Use.

Objectives There is a lack of knowledge on oral cancer and oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) among the local communities of Northeast India. Since the habit of tobacco is linked to the culture and oral cancer is a widespread epidemic here, it is pertinent to assess the knowledge about risk factors and readiness to quit the habit among the study population. Methods The present research was done in the Tobacco Cessation Centre (TCC), Department of Public Health Dentistry (PHD) of Regional Dental College (RDC), Guwahati, Assam, from Jan 2023 to June 2023. This cross-sectional research

Hepatitis C in patients with co-occurring mental disorders and substance use disorders: is tobacco use a possible risk factor?

This study of a dually diagnosed population in Colorado estimated the prevalence of hepatitis C to be 29.7%, or sixteen times higher than that in the general population. In attempts to determine possible risk factors, a surprisingly high correlation was found between the use of tobacco and HCV infection. This appears to be beyond the risk factor conveyed by IV drug use. Of the patients whose primary diagnoses were cocaine, opiate, amphetamine, or poly-substance dependence (drugs often used intravenously), 42% of the tobacco users were HCV positive, while only 20% of the non-tobacco using patie

Atherogenic index of plasma and atherogenic coefficient are increased in major depression and bipolar disorder, especially when comorbid with tobacco use disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is a robust comorbidity between mood disorders and cardiovascular disorder (CVD). The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and the atherogenic coefficient (AC) are important atherogenic indexes. The aims of this study were to delineate whether AIP and AC are increased in mood disorders especially when comorbid with tobacco use disorder (TUD). METHODS: In this case-control study we included 134 patients with mood disorders, bipolar disorder and unipolar depression (cases), and 197 individuals without mood disorder (controls) divided into those with and without TUD (defined as ne

Mental health and alcohol, drugs and tobacco: a review of the comorbidity between mental disorders and the use of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs.

This paper reviews some major epidemiological studies undertaken in high-income countries during the last 15 years which have reported the prevalence of mental disorders and substance use disorders and their relationship. Comorbidity between mental and substance use disorders is highly prevalent across countries. In general, people with a substance use disorder had higher comorbid rates of mental disorders than vice versa, and people with illicit drug disorders had the highest rates of comorbid mental disorders. There is a strong direct association between the magnitude of comorbidity and the

Divergent Long-Term Recovery After Long COVID in Tobacco Use Disorder and Healthy Controls: A Longitudinal Study.

INTRODUCTION: Although tobacco use disorder (TUD) and long COVID (LC) have been associated to neuropsychiatric disturbances, it remains unclear how tobacco dependence affects the recovery of clinical, cognitive, and biological processes over time. METHODS: This study compared individuals with tobacco use disorder and healthy controls using longitudinal assessments from pre-infection baseline through two post-COVID follow-ups over 12 months. Comprehensive assessments covered clinical, neuropsychiatric, and cognitive functioning, tobacco dependence and exposure, and peripheral biomarkers reflec

Tobacco use disorder is associated with increased risk of cardiomyopathy in a population-based study from Taiwan.

This population-based, individually matched case-control study aimed to examine the association between tobacco use disorder (TUD) and cardiomyopathy. We conducted a retrospective case-control analysis using data from the 2005 Longitudinal Health Insurance Database, a subset of Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). A total of 10,426 newly diagnosed cardiomyopathy cases and 41,704 matched controls (matched 1:4 by age, sex, and index year) from 2000 to 2015 were identified. TUD exposure was defined using ICD-9-CM codes. Conditional logistic regression was applied to estim

Unraveling neural complexity: Exploring brain entropy to yield mechanistic insight in neuromodulation therapies for tobacco use disorder.

Neuromodulation therapies, such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), have shown promise as treatments for tobacco use disorder (TUD). However, the underlying mechanisms of these therapies remain unclear, which may hamper optimization and personalization efforts. In this study, we investigated alteration of brain entropy as a potential mechanism underlying the neural effects of noninvasive brain stimulation by rTMS in people with TUD. We employed sample entropy (SampEn) to quantify the complexity and predictability of brain activity measured using resting-state fMRI data. Our
